Hyde Charitable Trust Individual Grants Programme 2012-15 Figures shown are from Hyde Charitable Trust grant-making from April 2012 March 2015 unless otherwise stated.

The Hyde Charitable Trust Individual Grants Programme 02 1,134 Individual grants awarded, helping residents to develop their skills, confidence and fulfil their potential, or to be supported in a time of need. 222,058 The value of our small grants making a big difference. The Hyde Charitable Trust s Individual Grants Programme provides grants for young residents, residents looking to get into employment or progress their careers, and those in need of essential items for their home. A recent evaluation of the funds showed that these small grants are important for residents, especially in times of ill-health or financial hardship. In this brochure we tell their stories and show how important small grants are. Residents kindly share their stories about each of our four funds: Jobs and Training Bursary - Grants of up to 200 enabling people to progress career goals and move into employment. Navi Scholarship Fund Flexible funding for recognised courses and qualifications supporting residents for whom funding is a barrier to developing their careers. Do More! Grants for Young People Grants of up to 200 to fund educational, cultural or sports activities. Home Essentials Grant Fund Grants of up to 300 for essential items for those experiencing financial hardship. In exceptional circumstances grant awards may be higher than limits shown here. Foundations for living Our grants help to level the playing field, providing much needed finance so that residents can take the next steps in their careers, take part in confidence and skills building activities, or simply have the basics needed for their home. We frequently hear that without the funding, taking part in an activity or making an essential purchase, would be impossible. Everyone has potential Everything we do is aimed at helping individuals and communities to realise their potential. Our grants help residents get on a steady footing so they can start thinking about next steps. And for those who are ready to move forwards our grants provide much needed funds to pay for courses and training. Protecting the vulnerable Welfare changes are creating challenges for Hyde residents. Our experience is that most people want to work but it is equally important to protect the more vulnerable. Our Home Essentials Fund was over-subscribed by 33% in its first year as we saw households under greater financial pressure.

Navi Scholarship Fund 53 Navi Fund Scholarships made since 2012 with a total value 57,700. Gary s story Jessica s Story: The Navi Scholarship Fund was set up in memory of a popular member of the The Hyde Group s finance team. The fund provides flexible funding where financial support is a barrier to residents developing their careers. A funding panel considers all applications and, in line with Navi s interests, training for careers in accountancy, finance and IT are prioritised. The list of courses funded is extensive and includes: Cisco Certificate Network Administrator Certificate (CCNA) Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) IT Support Technician Diploma AAT Accounting Qualification Approved Driving Instructor Training HGV Certificate of Professional Competence Therapeutic Counselling CPCAB Courses (Levels 3 and 4) NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety MSC Business Studies Prince 2 Project Management Qualification Access to Higher Education Diploma Gary and his wife are full-time carers for their disabled son, and live on income support. After working with a Hyde Plus Employment Adviser, Gary applied to the Navi Scholarship Fund so that he could complete Approved Driving Instructor training. He is studying really hard and taking extra lessons so that he can fulfil his aim of becoming a driving instructor, eventually teaching a few hours in the morning and again for a few more hours in the afternoon. This will not only increase the family s income but also means that he will be able to work flexibly and be at home to help his wife and son when needed. I am really grateful for the help I have been given by Hyde. Things would have been impossible without the funding. The course cost 2,500 and I couldn t believe it when they said yes! Jessica works on a contract as a teaching assistant in a secondary school supporting a pupil with autistic spectrum disorder. She has used a Navi Scholarship Fund grant to study for the Cambridge Certificate in English Language to Adults (CELTA) which will be really helpful in her career. Jessica was awarded a Navi Scholarship Fund grant of 1000. The course was really challenging and I have been doing it part-time while working as a teaching assistant in a secondary school. My aim is to combine this with teaching foreign students in the holidays, or teaching abroad, as I don t get any income from my school contract in school holidays or over the summer. Without the Hyde grant it would have taken me many years to save the money to do this course. 03

Jobs and Training Bursary 301 Jobs and training bursaries made from 2012-2015 with a value of 51,880. Hyde Plus Jobs and Training team works with residents to build on strengths, develop skills and find the right job. Residents can also apply for up to 200 to help move into employment, self-employment or progress in their careers. Sergio s story Sergio is a certified rope access technician setting up his own London based business. Following several months without a job Sergio decided to create a job for himself through self-employment. He could see there were opportunities open to him but all of them needed him to bring his own tools and personal protective equipment. Sergio had the personal drive to set up in business, but finding the money for insurance and other startup costs was his biggest hurdle. After advice and support from his Hyde Plus Employment Adviser, and specialist training in how to set up his own business, Sergio decided to apply for a Jobs and Training Bursary. His application was successful and with the 275 awarded he bought a positioning harness that conformed with all industry safety standards and regulations. The harness allows him to manoeuvre safely and reach parts of buildings that would otherwise require the expense of scaffolding. Sergio is now successfully working for himself, and is aiming to employ other people too. 04

Having the harness is a huge step towards my goal, which is not only to find work for myself but to employ other people. I am talking to both Hyde and a local council about doing work for them and employing some of their residents. It will take time and effort but that is my plan. 05

Home Essentials Fund 79 Home Essentials Grants awarded since 2014 providing 20,300 to support Hyde residents. 23% Of residents receiving a grant had work of some kind. The Home Essentials Fund was launched across all Hyde areas in 2014 to provide essential items for the home at times when residents are experiencing an unexpected or major crisis. Stephen s Story Mary s Story The most needed Home Essentials items were: Cookers Hobs or ovens Carpets or flooring Washing machines Beds 06 Stephen is diabetic and suffers from pulmonary disease. He met a Hyde Plus Money and Debt Adviser early after he moved in to his Hyde home. Unable to purchase carpet or cooking equipment his adviser applied for a Home Essentials Grant on his behalf. Now he has a carpet in his bedroom and hallway, and a gas cooker. It is a massive change as I was only able to cook ready-made meals and it s a lot warmer in the flat now. All this help from Hyde has really made a difference. Mary is a single parent with a young son. She first met a Hyde Plus Money and Debt Adviser when she having problems with budgeting and also suffering from the aftermath of traffic accident four years before. The accident had left her with very damaged muscles in her back and she was unable to have a good night s sleep. The Home Essentials Grant provided Mary with an orthopaedic bed which has made a huge difference to her sleeping patterns and pain levels. Mary is now on a new path and in her first year of studying Animal Management full time. In the bed I had I wasn t sleeping well. I woke up in pain. Now I am able to sleep better, there s very little pain and I am waking up with my back feeling better. I am taking fewer painkillers during the day now.

Do More! Grants for Young People 700 Do More! grants made since 2012, with a value of 92,000. Tristan s story Jayleigh s story Do More! grants enable our young residents to take part in activities that increase their skills, confidence, experience and learning. Often the grants mean that young people are able to take part in activities such as sport, music and drama or going on a school trip that they would otherwise not be able to afford. Tristan fell in love with the violin in his first year at primary school. He is now 11 and his dedication has earned him a music scholarship at a private secondary school. His parents applied for a Do More! grant of 200 for classes at the Royal College of Music, where Tristan was able to benefit from one-to-one violin tuition as well as musicianship, choir, quartet and music theory classes. The grant is a great help if we didn t have it, we would struggle to find the money. I would definitely encourage other families to apply. Jayleigh is 8 years old and loves singing and dancing and wanted to do more of both. Income is very tight for Jayleigh s mum, with the family budget stretched as she is unemployed and caring for a baby son. Jayleigh s mum applied for a Do More! grant so that Jayleigh could attend the Brit school. Jayleigh is a confident child and has made new friends. She is practising really hard for a forthcoming show. I ve recommended the grant to my friends as it has really helped us out at a time where money is limited. 07
