1 Occupational Therapy Services The JSP occupational therapy service provides high quality intervention to children and adults whose lives have been affected by an acquired disability. Our occupational therapists and rehabilitation assistants work with the client, their families, solicitors, case managers, support teams and other treating professionals in the client s home or community. We provide a range of specialist services to support our clients to regain lost skills, increase their independence, adjust to their disability and plan for the future. Rehabilitation Service Our occupational therapy intervention starts with a comprehensive assessment which enables the OT to identify the client s impairments and the impact these have on their functional performance. No two clients are the same, so we design and deliver diverse programmes tailored to each individual client s needs. Intervention may focus on independent living skills, social behaviour and relationships, leisure, education or work, but the primary aims of intervention are always increasing independence, optimising quality of life and minimising the impact of disability. Client-centred goals are integral to the formulation of programmes of occupational therapy intervention at JSP. Goals are set which the client works towards and these goals are monitored, reviewed and re-set regularly through the progression of the programme. We also use an evidence-based range of standardised functional and impairment based outcome measures, which are responsive measures of our clients progress according to their impairments and the goals they are working on. Information is communicated to the client s therapeutic and medico-legal teams via reports, updates or as quantitative data as appropriate. Our OTs work closely with case managers to provide bespoke training and ongoing clinical development of support workers. Manual Handling Services Equipment and Adaptation Service Our equipment and adaptations OTs are skilled in assessing and making recommendations for the provision of specialist equipment for both adults and children with complex needs. This may include specialist solutions for manual and powered wheelchairs, seating and posture management, accessible kitchen design, bathing and personal care and environmental control systems. Our intervention may include assessing the suitability of the client s existing housing taking into account their disability and their current and future physical, social and care needs. We will recommend adaptations and work alongside architects and building contractors to ensure the client s independence and quality of life is maximised. When a property cannot be adapted, we will source and advise on alternative properties. We specialise in assessing and recommending vehicle adaptations and purchases specific to the client s requirements, whether the client is a passenger or driver of the vehicle. Expert Witness Service In addition to providing our high quality services at practitioner level, we are also able to offer an expert witness service in any of the stated interventions. We have an accredited moving and handling key trainer who is able to provide risk assessments and training in relation to moving and handling equipment and techniques. As every client s situation and needs are unique we welcome discussion about any potential referral. We have no predetermined geographical, age or injury criteria and therefore recommend you contact us to discuss how we may be able to assist. Please contact Denise Slack, Occupational Therapy Manager, on or deniseslack@jspsh.co.uk

2 We are proud of the service we offer to clients, families and those working with them, but don t just take our word for it year old Dexter was involved in a road traffic accident in 2002 in which he sustained a spinal cord injury. Following a period of rehabilitation in hospital he was discharged to a small council flat. Dexter s OT first assessed him for a specialist lightweight wheelchair allowing him to access the community and start attending college. She then supported him with purchasing a bungalow and in consultation, carried out adaptations to promote his independence and quality of life. The property is now wheelchair accessible throughout, including the garden and garage. It has a bespoke kitchen designed with cooking facilities at a height Dexter is safe and comfortable using as well as a fully accessible toilet, bath and shower. The OT also assisted Dexter to buy a BMW sports coupe which is his pride and joy. He can transfer himself and the wheelchair in and out independently, meaning he can go shopping, visit friends and family and access his local gym on his own. Dexter is pleased with the intervention he has received from the JSP equipment and adaptations OT and says my life is running smoothly now Chloe acquired a brain injury as a child. At school she was told she would never achieve her dream of becoming a nurse but she was determined to prove everyone wrong. Chloe s OT helped her to plan and organise her university work, study for her exams and liaised with university staff to make sure Chloe got the right support. She also helped her learn the practical and emotional skills she needed to live away from home. After three years Chloe passed her degree course and has just started working as a nurse. Just to let you know, I have got my degree results and got a 2.2 which I m so happy with, I m over the moon. Thanks for all your help! Chloe via Free spirited Aaron s independence was curtailed by an accident which left him with problems with his memory, balance and hearing. He was keen to learn more about his new self and what residual skills and strengths he could use to give his life more of a sense of purpose and freedom. 6 months into his OT programme Aaron is already shopping and cooking for the family with support, using public transport to visit his friends and most importantly is spending much longed-for time on his own in his local community. Aaron says Since my introduction to my OT her input has really helped further my understanding and healing of my brain injury, enabling me to feel a confidence and inner knowing, causing renewed independence and self belief Aaron s partner Maxine adds Seeing Aaron become more confident and independent, something really important to him, is wonderful

3 Specialist Rehabilitation Occupational Therapy Service We offer: High quality, community based OT programmes to adults and children whose lives have been affected by an acquired disability. A comprehensive assessment to identify each client s impairments and how they impact on their functional performance across a broad spectrum of activities such as independent living skills, social behaviour, relationships, leisure, education and work. Intervention aimed at helping clients to regain or compensate for lost skills, increase their independence, improve their quality of life, adjust to and minimise the impact of their disability and plan for the future. Individually tailored, diverse interventions focused on client centred goals which are monitored, reviewed and reset regularly throughout the OT programme. Regular evaluation of the OT programme utilising an evidence based range of standardised functional and impairment based outcome measures which are responsive measures of the client s progress. Collaborative, interdisciplinary, multi agency working which ensures the client s wishes and needs remain the central focus of intervention and decision making. Clear, accurate and timely communication with the client s therapeutic and medico-legal teams via reports, updates or quantitative data as appropriate. Bespoke Client specific training and ongoing clinical development of support workers. We are proud of the work we do with our clients, but don t just take our word for it. Here, some of our clients tell their side of the story Sam, now 18, sustained a brain injury at birth and says: I would recommend to have an OT because they have helped me do things I ve never been able to do, and gave me the confidence to do things I never thought I could do. With my OT, I learnt how to cook various meals like lasagne, pizza, fajitas, she helped me to plan meals like getting all the equipment and ingredients out first then follow a step by step recipe. I ve also had help finding a job after I finished college, this included building up my CV. I ve also worked on interview skills because I have a lack of eye contact when talking to new people. With this help from my OT, it has helped me go into a job volunteering at a cafe. Sam

4 Phil was referred to JSP's occupational therapy service by a case manager at the age of 22, having sustained a spinal injury at the age of 9. He had a support package for all practical tasks including dressing, meal preparation and transport. Phillip had completed a university degree and was able to drive but lacked the confidence to go places on his own or try new activities. With his OT Phil started cooking which helped him develop confidence and a new role within the family. His confidence continued to grow until he was able to manage without his support package, tried out for the Team GB 2012 Paralympic squad and has recently returned from a two month road trip round America. After first having reservations about having regular OT sessions I soon began to realise the benefits. I was growing more confident going out in my car on my own, and generally just growing more independent. This was highly evident when in the summer of this year I embarked upon a trip across the USA, and whilst it was gruelling, physically and mentally I am glad I've done it, and I am in no doubt that I wouldn't have got there had it not been for the help, support and odd cooking disaster my time with the OT provided. Phil I found the OT from JSP to be most professional in her approach. Her communication skills were excellent and she was able to be flexible in her approach as the situation demanded. She was sensitive to the needs of all members of the family which allowed for good progress to be made in the development of the skills needed to facilitate independent living for my client in the future. Beryl Hanley, Independent Case Manager Jade first met her OT at the age of 16. The effects of her brain injury meant she was finding the transition from school to college difficult. Over the next five years Jade s OT supported her to achieve a BTEC National Diploma with distinction, secure a voluntary work placement and learn independent living skills such as shopping, cooking, travelling independently and planning and managing her time. The OT worked alongside a JSP rehabilitation assistant, case manager, neuropsychologist, support workers, college tutors and Jade s manager at work to maximise her progress in the rehabilitation programme. Jade now lives in her own home with support twice a week. I feel as though I have been on a long journey above and beyond which I wouldn t have been able to do if my OT and rehabilitation programme wasn t there. Getting from where I was, to where I am, has been a struggle and I now know that it is ok to want to say no! when this type of input is presented. But working with my OT has given me the tools I needed to achieve my goal of living a normal life because in the long run living life gets much better and easier. Jade Working with the OT has been instrumental in Jade both acquiring new skills and in developing ways to help her compensate for the unhelpful effects of her injury. Working towards common goals has meant psychological strategies are carried over into other daily activities. Dr Mike Smith, Clinical Neuropsychologist As every client s situation and needs are unique we welcome discussion about any potential referral. We have no predetermined geographical, age or injury criteria and therefore recommend you contact us to discuss how we may be able to assist. Please contact Denise Slack, Occupational Therapy Manager, on or deniseslack@jspsh.co.uk
