TRANSFORMER DECOMMISSIONING For transformers that aren t candidates for refurbishment, we provide comprehensive decommissioning and disposal services, with a particular emphasis on safely detecting, analyzing, handling, and disposing of PCBs. In addition to breaking down and recycling equipment at our own facilities in Florida, Mississippi, Indiana, and Arizona, we can also dispatch seasoned field crews nationwide to dismantle larger equipment on-site or perform forensic teardowns to facilitate failure analysis. DISPOSAL Located at our facility in DeFuniak Springs, Florida, our state-of-the-art Scrap Metal Recovery Oven (SMRO) is capable of disposing of equipment with a PCB contamination level of 50-499 PPM PCB. The SMRO uses a method of thermal destruction per Title 40 CFR Part 761.72. The process is fully permitted under the regulations set forth by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Permitting, and Compliance Authority and USEPA Region 4. The SMRO is equipped with primary and secondary material-processing chambers and records regulatory compliance using a Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS). Our 7,500-square-foot disposal building was specifically designed and engineered to eliminate any threat of PCB contamination to the outside environment. All electrical equipment is received and dismantled inside a multiple containment system within the building, and the building s monolithically poured floor is underlined with a 10 mil plastic liner and finished with two layers of epoxy coating. Our Florida location is also a USEPA Region 4-approved Commercial Storage Facility for the storage of PCB material requiring disposal. The combination of these two regulated activities ensures our clients of a limited environmental footprint, eliminating long-term liability in the disposal method of PCB-contaminated electrical equipment. RECYCLING Emerald Transformer currently recycles approximately 98% of each of the 150,000 units that we process every year, and we are constantly looking for new product streams for transformer components that can add value for our customers and decrease landfill deposits even further. We have the capability and equipment to shear, bake, and chop windings to increase the value of our customers recyclable materials. In addition, our continued relationship with metal processing experts allows us to eliminate intermediaries and further maximize the value of these materials. ON-SITE DECOMMISSIONING For equipment that is too large to transport to our facilities or that requires specialized demolition we can dispatch one of our seven field crews nationwide to perform onsite decommissioning. These teams of three to five seasoned veterans can handle the dismantling and removal of large substation transformers, as well as ancillary equipment such as oil circuit breakers, switch cabinets, and reactors. The teams take extensive precautions to ensure the safe containment and disposal of all materials, and they are committed to leaving every site in better condition than it was when they arrived. Emerald Transformer s on-site services also include forensic teardowns, which allow insurance companies, manufacturer s representatives, and engineers to visually inspect the condition of internal components when trying to determine the cause of a unit s failure. OIL PROCESSING & LAB SERVICES We use specialized, industry-leading, environmentally sensitive processing methods to treat dielectric oil for the removal of PCBs, unwanted water, and particulates and return processed oil to new life as lubricants and base oils, as well as regenerated transformer oil for the utility industry. OIL RECYCLING Oil that is brought to our facilities for processing first passes through a multilevel operation that removes unwanted water and particulate matter. Following this initial water and particulate removal process, oil that contains from 2 to 49 PPM PCBs is directed to the plant s PCB-removal operation. PCB removal begins with the introduction of sodium metal into an aboveground storage tank containing 7,000 gallons of PCB-contaminated mineral oil. The oil is tested periodically to track the declining PCB levels, and once these levels are no longer detectable, the oil is transferred to a 20,000-gallon holding tank for additional processing. During this phase of the operation, excess sodium metal and unwanted particulates byproducts of the sodium metal/pcb reaction are removed and the oil is purified. At the completion of this process, a thirdparty laboratory certifies that the oil is free of PCBs, and it is transferred into one of three bulk-product tanks. The previously contaminated oil is now ready to begin a new life as an industrial lubricant or base oil. This entire purification process takes between one and two days, and we have the capacity to process 7,000 gallons of PCB-contaminated oil per day. REPROCESSED TRANSFORMER OIL In addition to recycling and reintroducing dielectric oil as lubricants and base oils, we are also able to reintroduce many dielectric oils back into the electrical utility industry as reprocessed transformer oil. The oil is filtered, degassed, and dewatered to return it to a proper specification. Emerald Transformer personnel use in-line testing equipment to closely monitor the process and ensure that the oil has reached purification standards. Once the oil recycling process is complete, an additional sample is taken, and an outside testing laboratory certifies that the oil is ready to be reintroduced as a dielectric fluid. LAB ANALYSIS While our standard turnaround time for dielectric oil PCB analysis is five business days, we also offer a 24-hour turnaround option when time is limited. Our typical lab analysis covers the following: PCB in oil per gas chromatography Moisture content in oil by KF Dielectric breakdown voltage PCB on surface wipe Using the Sonic Ruptor 400 Ultrasonic Homogenizer Dissolved gas analysis, ASTM screening, and soil analysis Emerald Transformer 850.892.2711 phone power@emeraldtransformer.com email www.emeraldtransformer.com web

IN-FIELD TECHNICAL SERVICES We offer a full spectrum of in-field services, from on-site repairs and testing to commissioning of new substations and diagnostic evaluations. Our field service technicians can troubleshoot and repair any type of substation equipment, including wiring, relays, controls, and transformers. TRANSFORMERS TESTING Perform Megger, TTR, power factor, winding resistance, excitation current, and hi-pot tests. VISUAL INSPECTION Thoroughly inspect each unit for leaks along with broken or damaged components. Inspect and test all gauges, trip and alarm circuits, and fan circuits. Inspect sudden pressure relay and sudden pressure relief device, and test if necessary. Check nitrogen system for proper operation. BUSHINGS Inspect for leaks, cracks, and other possible damage. Test for overall power factor and capacitance. Compare measurements to nameplate data and check at each scheduled maintenance interval for degradation. Perform hot collar testing when necessary. NO-LOAD TAP CHANGER If TTR or winding resistance test shows a potential problem, perform internal inspection to determine if the tap changer needs to be repaired or replaced. Load tap changer. TTR test in all tap positions. Clean tap changer compartment. Check all contacts for wear and replace as necessary. Check operating mechanism, control, position indicator, limit switches, and counter for proper operation. Perform hi-pot test if equipped with vacuum bottles. Install new door gasket and new oil. RADIATORS Check shutoff valves and radiators for leaks. Inspect for obstructions and clean if necessary. Check to confirm fans are operational. CURRENT TRANSFORMERS Test with Omicron CT Analyzer and Megger. OIL TESTING Pull oil samples for DGA, moisture, and dielectric tests. Perform testing once a year to ensure there are no problems that could cause early failure. If oil tests show a potential problem, perform further testing for metals in oil and furanic compounds. Test at three-month intervals if any of the tests show abnormal results. Emerald Transformer 850.892.2711 phone power@emeraldtransformer.com email www.emeraldtransformer.com web
