Cluster Overview McKinney ISD is partnering with Collin College to offer Technical Dual Credit for the 2014/2015 school year for juniors and seniors that have completed Algebra II. Technical Dual Credit allows students to take a college level class at high school and earn both high school and college credit. The classes being offered are IT Essentials (A+), Network +, CCNA and Security +. Technical Dual Credit classes can enhance a student s education by providing hands on experience in specific technical fields. These classes will prepare the student to take the certification exam for A+, Network +, CCENT (first half of CCNA), and Security +. These certifications are highly regarded in industry and allow the students to work in a technical field before completing their college degree. They can further advance their education by continuing classes at Collin College to get their Associates of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Computer Networking or CyberSecurity. To be eligible for Technical Dual Credit students must complete the admissions process with Collin College this spring and register for the class in June with Collin College. Juniors can take two dual credit classes and seniors can potentially take three dual credit classes per long semester. Interested students should discuss this opportunity with his/her High School counselor and attend the informational meeting later this spring at McKinney ISD. This course is designed for those students who wish to prepare for AP Computer Science or prepare for entry to a computer science major at the college level. Students will use various software applications as well as the Java programming language throughout the course. The course will focus on an understanding of objected oriented programming and preparation for AP Computer Science to be taken the following year. Students who wish to skip Pre-AP Computer Science and enroll directly into AP Computer Science must demonstrate proficiency in problem solving and programming in entry-level Java. INTRO TO ENGINEERING DESIGN (IED) (PROJECT LEAD THE WAY) Grade Placement: 9-12 Into to Engineering Design (IED) (PLTW) the foundation course in a series of Project Lead the Course #: 0985 Way pre-engineering courses, is designed to introduce the student to the field to pursue a Prerequisite: Algebra I with emphasis on the concept of developing a 3-D model or solid rendering of an object, beginning with hand sketching and advancing to 3-D modeling software. The course will emphasize the design development process of a product and how a model of that product is produced, analyzed and evaluated using a computer-aided design system. Various design applications will be explored with discussion of possible careers. This science, technology, and math integrated program focuses on engineering design processes while helping students develop skills that better prepare them for a rigorous academic college curriculum. AP COMPUTER SCIENCE Grade Placement: 10-12 Course #: 0233 Prerequisite: Pre-AP Computer Science or demonstrated proficiency in basic computer literacy knowledge and skills AP Computer Science is an advanced level approach to problem solving and analysis using Java.
