General Information for Students and Parents Academic Calendar Beaufort County Educational Technical Pathways students will follow the Beaufort County Schools calendar. Acceptance Notification and Orientation Session All students who are accepted for enrollment will be notified by phone and/or by mail. School Day Regular school hours are 9:00am 3:00pm. Transportation Pathways students who need transportation will ride the regular school bus to the high school closest to their home in the mornings and transfer to a BCETC shuttle bus for the ride to BCETC. In the afternoon, BCETC students will ride a shuttle bus to the high school closet to their home and transfer to the regular bus for the trip home. Meals BCETC will participate in the federal school lunch program. Students may also bring lunch and snacks from home. Discipline BCETC students are expected to conduct themselves as responsible young adults at all times both on campus and while involved in any off-campus school-related activity. Infractions may result in serious consequences, including possible suspension, principal recommendation for removal from program, or expulsion. Repeated offenses will cause a student to be removed from BCETC permanently. Parents are notified of all serious disciplinary actions. Extracurricular Activities BCETC will not offer sports, band, choir, ROTC but we encourage the formation of student clubs. If you are extremely interested or involved in such activities, you need to strongly consider whether you want to give them up to be a BCETC student. Personal Maturity and Responsibility Students are accepted in the Pathways Program with the understanding that they will adopt and exhibit a serious attitude towards their classes, their learning, and their academic preparation for college and the workplace. For that reason, BCETC Pathways students must assume a great level of personal responsibility for themselves, their safety, and the results of their decisions. Parents must support and encourage this as well. This high level of expectations is absolutely mandatory, especially where the next several items are concerned. Resource and Internet Access 2
BCETC students are required to make occasional use of library and internet resources to fulfill course requirements. BCETC students will be required to sign the BCS Acceptable Use Policy. Attendance BCETC students will follow the BCS attendance policy. Regular attendance is essential to success as a Pathways student. As a result, students are expected to attend every class every day. If absences occur, students are responsible for work missed and are to be prepared for course work when they return. It is the student s responsibility to contact his/her teachers for missed assignments to meet these expectations. Problems with attendance may result in dismissal from BCETC. Coursework and Graduation Requirements The sequence of the curriculum at BCETC is different than the other high schools in the district. The difference allows students at BCETC to complete their high school diploma and work towards a Career/Technical certification. To accomplish this, students at BCETC may be dual enrolled in some courses. Dual enrollment allows them to receive a high school graduation credit and a community college credit for the same course. While the students at BCETC will be academically prepared for dual enrollment, the courses will be challenging. Students and parents should examine the courses and the sequence of courses at the BCS website. This is essential to the decision of whether or not BCETC is an appropriate choice. Please review the BCETC diploma requirements included in this packet. Parent Involvement BCETC students cannot survive and thrive without the support of their parents and families. Parents of BCETC students must be actively involved in their student s education and fully engaged in school events and activities. Inclement Weather Procedures BCETC closes when BCS closes due to inclement weather. Watch the TV news and listen to the radio in such cases, all BCS closing for weather will be announced just as other institutions are announced. Now the next step is up to you: You know basically what to expect and what is expected. Do not apply if you cannot handle all of these expectations. But if you think you can do it, and you want to get a high school diploma by way of the Pathways Program, continue the application process. We wish you the best of luck, and we look forward to receiving your application for the upcoming school year. 3
