Leverage the Power of Geography for Unprecedented Insight & Knowledge The 21st century has brought unprecedented challenges to the transportation industry. Developments in both transportation and communication technologies have made the world more mobile and interdependent, while travel demands continue to rise. The requirements placed on transportation systems have increased exponentially, yet infrastructure is aging and in need of rehabilitation. This convergence of increasing demand and limited expansion abilities has put enormous pressure on the transportation industry, creating issues related to congestion, energy costs, the environment and passenger safety. Adding to this pressure is the complexity of maintaining and improving operations and facilities while protecting the interests of the local area. The answer lies in gaining access to timely, accurate information and developing a greater understanding of these complex systems for more informed decision-making. Unfortunately, many transportation organizations currently contend with: inaccurate and outdated information data located on disparate systems in different locations difficulty meeting expanding passenger demands aging infrastructure limited expansion capabilities passenger safety concerns Enter GIS A geographic information system (GIS) integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. Understanding the relationship between location and transportation assists tremendously in managing, planning, constructing, evaluating and maintaining transportation systems. At the forefront of GIS technology is Esri. Esri offers a market leading GIS solution that allows transportation professionals to organize vast amounts of complex data into understandable visual representations in every branch of transportation. Drawing from our comprehensive suite of software and an array of support services that include technical support, training, and the expertise of our professional services consultants and business partners, Esri provides flexible and scalable solutions that are tailored to your organization s individual requirements. Our solutions are interoperable and designed to interface with existing databases, networks and enterprise resource planning systems. The types of organizations that have adopted Esri technology span the transportation spectrum and include: airport authorities railroad companies public transit organizations port authorities governments couriers logistics and fleet management organizations Harness the Power of GIS for Transportation Esri Canada 1

Harness the Power of GIS for Transportation Esri s GIS solutions help traffic managers, waterway managers, public transport professionals, dispatchers, designers, engineers and others to better understand geographic relationships that affect infrastructure, demand, safety, environmental impacts and other transportation concerns. GIS plays a vital role in managing, planning, evaluating and maintaining transportation systems while satisfying the needs of the broader transportation community and public for data accessibility. Infrastructure Management Routing, Scheduling & Dispatch Asset Tracking Territory Optimization & Planning From bridges to tunnels to airplanes to port facilities, our solutions support professionals in the planning, design, building and management of infrastructure. Modeling capabilities make it possible to predict infrastructure demand years into the future, while centralized access to integrated systems help to better manage your infrastructure. Dispatch managers need to know when, where, and how quickly tasks are completed to keep operations running smoothly and at the lowest cost. Esri solutions help you manage these business processes with real-time tracking, scheduling, and optimal routing tools that help reduce fuel consumption and therefore create a smaller carbon footprint. Whether managing a highway construction project or overseeing port operations, Esri solutions help you monitor the location and movement of objects in real time and then share this information via the Internet or intranet. You can track personnel, mobile assets and traffic flow and then trigger action based on defined criteria. Strategically defined territories are the key to running an efficient and productive transportation enterprise. Whether your territories relate to customer deliveries, services or emergency management, Esri s rich visualization tools can be used to model and forecast potential outcomes for more strategic decision-making. 2 Esri Canada Harness the Power of GIS for Transportation

The integration of GIS into our systems lets us complete all of our planning right here in the office so that we rarely need to send resources into the field. What used to take up to a month to complete can now be done in less than a week. Eric Nadeau Transportation Manager District Scolaire 1, New Brunswick Operations Supply Chain Management Distribution & Fleet Management Safety & Security Operations managers strive to be as efficient as possible. Esri technology integrates data feeds and shares dashboard views to create a summary of current conditions. These views enable managers to quickly respond to emerging events and can be shared with the public to give drivers the latest information on current travel conditions. Esri s GIS solutions can be used to model supply and delivery points to determine product routing optimization. Our solutions also provide data management and reporting support for sophisticated product transaction management systems. For example, you can determine the time it will take to reach delivery locations from different service areas. Fleet managers need to make sure daily movement and maintenance schedules run efficiently without compromising customer service. Esri s solutions can help you save 10 to 30% in operational expenses by determining the optimum number of vehicles required on the road. This reduces overtime and unnecessary wear and tear on vehicles. Whether designing a new highway, building a public transportation system or managing a railway, safety and security are always a top priority. Esri s solutions let you plan the safest routes, analyze incident locations, uncover root causes of danger and successfully respond to safety needs. Esri s GIS is also an integrating technology for infrastructure security systems. Harness the Power of GIS for Transportation Esri Canada 3

Key Benefits & Features In the information-intensive environment of transportation, Esri technology plays a critical role due to its ability to integrate a wide range of data sources, from legacy systems to imagery, and to make complex data quickly and easily understood through visual representation. The ability of Esri s GIS solutions to intelligently manage, correlate, predict, model and share information makes it an essential analytical and decision-making tool. This is a fast track project and we are bound by a very tight schedule. The GeoEngineering Content Management System provides a single portal where stakeholders can freely and securely access timely information and retrieve project status updates, enabling us to reduce risk and get things done on time. Hossein Bidhendi Geotechnical Coordinator Toronto Transit Commission Integrate Diverse Information: Informed decisions rely on integrated information from diverse sources. Using Esri technology, data can be compiled into a common operational picture for comparative analysis, visual presentation and reporting. Perform Advanced Statistical Analysis: Advanced and computationally efficient algorithms perform complex statistical calculations to accurately deliver timely results for decision making, planning and forecasting. Communicate More Effectively: Presenting clinical and administrative information graphically through mapped data opens the door to a wealth of information that can be quickly assimilated, communicated, understood and explained. Improve Data Accuracy with Mobile Devices: By integrating mobile devices such as handheld GPS units data can be entered with exact geographic coordinates along with other descriptive information. Provide Access to Data Across the Enterprise: Data is far more valuable when it can be integrated and used in the decision making process by a broad range of users. Esri technology provides a way to move data from the project level so that it can be used by the entire organization. Data can be easily accessed using an Intranet or the Internet. 4 Esri Canada Harness the Power of GIS for Transportation

Esri s GIS Solutions in Action Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), ON This Web application was developed to help manage the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE) project. Information such as tunnel sections, municipal boundaries, roads, and construction are colour coded for easy visualization and analysis. District Scolaire 01, NB District Scolaire 01 developed an application that assigns bus stops to students so that staff no longer had to manually plan routes on paper. They also built a public-facing Web application that lets parents, students, real estate agents and other members of the general public search for bus stops and school assignment by postal code. Esri s 3-D analysis of aviation airspace This application enables airports to conduct a 3-D analysis of aviation airspace to ensure airplanes do not compromise safety by leaving designated airspace parameters.
