DESCRIPTIONS OF THE MINOR STUDIES IN THE MSC PROGRAMS 81 Please note that the following information is based on the 2011 program and is subject to change. The form in which the program will be offered in 2012 depends on the trends and fundraising for the program. Please, read Opinto-Infos and check our web site for further information, http://www.hse.fi/itp In 2011, the program consisted of two parallel subprograms: Business & Technologies and Strategy & Experience Design. Business & Technologies subprogram Business & Technologies subprogram aims at providing students with an understanding of ebusiness infrastructure technologies, the new business opportunities these technologies create, and their effects on the business environments and societies in which they are used. Courses in 2011: 1. Information Technology and E-business Fundamentals 2. Achieving Strategic Advantage through Distributed Technologies 3. Managing Software and Service Business 4. Business Project Strategy & Experience Design subprogram Strategy & Experience Design subprogram aims at providing students with an understanding of basic methods for producing and designing digital media products, concept and design processes, and strategic decisions related to digital media. Courses in 2011: 1. Strategic Design 2. User Experience Design 3. Prototyping and Implementation 4. Business Project Both subprograms are worth 24 credits and are recognized as a minor subject in the M.Sc. program at School of Economics. Individual modules of the program are taught by visiting faculty. Visitors from other universities and from the business community are invited to come and teach for a short period in the field of their particular expertise. All courses are run in the form of intensive modules. A normal one semester university course is compressed to three weeks of full time study. Each course includes 42 contact hours (3,5 hours a day, four days a week) excluding group work and individual assignments. Approximate workload for ITP is 6-9 hours a day throughout the summer. In addition to theoretical studies in ITP courses all students complete a business project for cooperating companies under the program supervision. The working language is English. It is essential that students understand spoken and written English with ease, and can express their thoughts clearly in English. The 2012 Information Technology Program with course descriptions and the selection criteria will be announced later. The application period for following ITP will start at the beginning of year 2012. The minor supports particularly such skills that are needed in the design of sustainable solutions and in the management of both business innovation and those social conflicts that are inherent in the sustainability agenda. The minor can be combined with any majors in the School of Economics. It provides opportunities to develop and make use of one s knowledge in other areas of study. On the other hand, the minor contributes to sustainability expertise. Sustainability concerns are introduced in this program as an increasingly relevant context of business. The interdisciplinarity of the program will enhance the understanding of the work practices of sustainability experts from different fields as well the skills of communication about sustainability. Structure of the minor studies in Creative Sustainability (Aalto University School of Economics): It is acceptable if all the courses in the minor are done in the School of Economics, but due to the interdisciplinary nature of the CS-program, it is highly recommended that students also complete courses from the School of Art and Design and from the School of Engineering. The minor is offered only for master level students that are selected for the IDBM Minor Program. The basic structure for IDBM minor studies for the School of Economics students is as follows: MINOR STUDIES STRUCTURE (24 CR) 1. IDBM Industry Project (10*/16 CR) The industry project credits are divided to three inputs 26E01300 IDBM Industry Project (Business)* id0003 IDBM Industry Project (Design) 5 cr TU-22.1510 IDBM Industry Project (Technology) 5 cr *Some students have the possibility to include the School of Economics Industry Project input (26E01300, 6 CR) to their major studies. In this case the students can complete more studies in the School of Art and Design and Schools of Technologies. 2. Studies at the School of Art and Design (4/7** CR) Selected from the list 3. Studies at the School of Science/School of Engineering (4/7** CR) Selected from the list **Students that include the IDBM Industry project input (6 CR) to their major studies can take courses worth of 7 credits at the School of Art and Design and Schools of Technologies.
DESCRIPTIONS OF THE MINOR STUDIES IN THE MSC PROGRAMS 89 It is also proposed that in special cases the students can apply for different minor studies structure. In that case the student will receive fewer credits from the project in order to be able to study more at the other schools. The minimum amount of credits for the project is in any case 6 CR. Thus, the minor studies (24 CR) would in that case be formed as follows: 6 CR IDBM Industry Project + 9 CR studies at School of Art and Design+ 9 CR studies at the Schools of Technologies.
