1. Get Started Hardware Requirements Minimum free space 150 gig storage 4 Gig RAM 2 CPU 2 Core Require VMWare ESX v5 or higher Does not run on VMware Workstation / VMware Player Steps you probably already completed: 1. From the SevOne web site click Try It Now. 2. In the Start Managing Your Network Today section enter the following: First Name Last Name Email Address Job Title Company Country 3. Click Submit. 2. SevOne Download Installation Perform the following steps to download the SevOne-Download.ova image file and license file from the SevOne download server: 1. On the Download Page, download the SevOne-Download.ova file. 2. Download the license.dat file. 3. Launch VMware Player. 4. Click the File menu and select Open a Virtual Machine. www.sevone.com 6
5. Navigate to the SevOne-Download.ova and select it. 6. Click Open to display the Import Virtual Machine page. www.sevone.com 7
7. In the Name for the new virtual machine field, enter the name of the virtual machine. 8. In the Storage path for the new virtual machine field, enter the location for the virtual machine. 9. Wait for the virtual machine to import. 10. After the image import completes, double click on the virtual machine. 11. When the prompt for VMware Tools appears, click Remind Me Later. www.sevone.com 8
3. Appliance Network Configuration The following appears after you open the console on the SevOne NMS computer. From this point forward in the document, the SevOne NMS computer is referred to as the SevOne NMS appliance. Use the configuration menu to enter your company s network settings. You need the following information: System Name (Host Name) Host IP address and sub-netmask Broadcast address Default Gateway IP address DNS primary & secondary IP address NTP (Time Server) IP address Domain Name On the first page, press Enter to display the logon page that controls access to the Configuration Menu. www.sevone.com 9

With the Change Password option selected on the left, press Enter to display the Change Password fields on the right. 1. In the Current Password field, enter the current password (SevOne NMS initial default password changeme) and press Tab. 2. In the New Password field, enter your new password and press Tab. 3. In the (Retype) Password field, enter your new password a second time to confirm. 4. Press Enter to save the Change Password settings and return the focus to the menu on the left. www.sevone.com 11
Press the down arrow to select System Name in the left menu and press Enter to display the System Name fields on the right. 1. In the Hostname field, enter the hostname for the SevOne NMS appliance. 2. Press Enter to save the System Name settings and return the focus to the menu on the left. www.sevone.com 12
Press the down arrow to select IP Address and Gateway and press Enter to display the IP address and gateway fields on the right. If your network uses DHCP type Y to disable the following fields and skip the IP Address and Gateway steps. If your network does not use DHCP, type N and complete the following fields. 1. In the IP Address field, enter IP address of the SevOne NMS appliance and press Tab. 2. In the Netmask field, enter the netmask of the SevOne NMS appliance and press Tab. 3. In the Gateway field, enter the IP address of the SevOne NMS appliance and press Tab. 4. In the Broadcast field, enter the SevOne NMS broadcast IP address. 5. Press Enter to save the IP Address and Gateway settings and return the focus to the menu on the left. www.sevone.com 13
Press the down arrow to select DNS and Search Domains and press Enter to display the DNS and Search Domains fields on the right. 1. In the Primary DNS field, enter the IP address of the DNS server for SevOne NMS to use first and press Tab. 2. In the Secondary DNS field, enter the IP address for SevOne NMS to use second, if applicable and press Tab. 3. In the Tertiary DNS field, enter the IP address of the DNS server for SevOne NMS to use third, if applicable and press Tab. 4. In the Search Domains field, enter the domain names or IP addresses for the search domains for SevOne NMS to use (separated by a space). 5. Press Enter to save the DNS and Search Domains settings and return the focus to the menu on the left. www.sevone.com 14
Press the down arrow to select Time and Date and press Enter to display the Time and Date fields on the right. Confirm that the time and date are correct for Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) (a.k.a. Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)). This is the SevOne NMS system time. You define time and date settings for users, devices, and reports via the SevOne NMS GUI in a later step. If needed, enter the time and date using the appropriate format in the fields provided. Press Enter to save the Time and Date settings and to return the focus to the menu on the left. www.sevone.com 15
Press the down arrow to select NTP Servers and press Enter to display the NTP Servers fields on the right. In the Servers field, enter the DNS name or IP address of the time server for SevOne NMS to use to maintain time settings. Press Enter to save the NTP Servers settings and to return the focus to the menu on the left. www.sevone.com 16
If you changed the System Name settings or the IP Address and Gateway settings, press the down arrow to select Shutdown and Restart and press Enter to display a Shutdown option and a Reboot option on the right. For all other configuration setting changes, you can press the down arrow to select Exit. In the Shutdown/Restart section select an option and press Enter to shut down or reboot the SevOne NMS appliance. If you highlight Exit, when you press Enter the initial Configuration Menu Welcome page appears. www.sevone.com 17
4. Install License and Log on SevOne NMS The SevOne NMS software application is fully loaded on the appliance. Perform the following steps to install the license file named license.dat that you downloaded with the Virtual Appliance. 1. Enter the URL for the SevOne appliance into your web browser to display the SevOne NMS license agreement. 2. Click Accept to display the License upload page. 3. Click Browse. 4. Navigate your file hierarchy to the license.dat file, select the license.dat file, and click Open. 5. Click Submit to import the license 6. On the Finished Importing Certificate message, click OK. 7. Restart your browser. 8. Enter the URL for the SevOne appliance into your web browser to display the Login www.sevone.com 18
page. 9. In the Username field enter admin. 10. In the Password field, enter SevOne (case sensitive) 11. Click Login. Note: The first time the admin user logs on you are prompted to set your time zone. 12. Click the Time Zone drop-down and select a time zone. If the applicable time zone does not appear in the Time Zone drop-down list, you can add time zones from the Cluster Manager (Administration > Cluster Manager > Cluster Settings > Devices). 13. Select the Never Ask Me Again check box to not see the Time Zone Setting prompt again. The Time Zone prompt does not display again even when your browser detects a time zone change. 14. 5. Startup Wizard When the admin user logs on for the first time, the Startup Wizard appears to guide you through the first initial steps to get devices you want to monitor and poll into SevOne NMS for discovery. All Startup Wizard workflows are duplicated within the application as noted in this document. If needed, click the Administration menu and select Startup Wizard. Welcome Startup Wizard Welcome Page The Welcome page on the Startup Wizard provides a link to the SevConnect/Network Performance Forums community where you can post questions about SevOne NMS. Click Next. Scan Subnets The Scan Subnets wizard page enables you to create IP address ranges and subnet blocks to scan your network for items that can be pinged. Anything SevOne NMS can ping is a candidate. Candidates you add as devices to SevOne NMS send data and are polled by SevOne NMS for metrics that are used in reports and for alerts etc. www.sevone.com 20
Startup Wizard Scan Subnets Page All subnets you create are scanned when you click Finish on the Startup Wizard. The Device Manager displays the devices from which data is polled and entries you make on this wizard page are duplicated on the Discovery Manager Watched Subnets tab. 1. Click Add Subnet to display the Add Subnet pop-up. 2. In the Subnet Name field, enter the name of the IP Address range or subnet block. 3. Click the Peer drop-down and select this appliance. This appliance should be the only peer in the list. 4. Click the Action drop-down. o Select Add Device to add everything that is able to be pinged to the Device Manager for object discovery and data polling. The Discovery Action column in the subnets list displays Add Device. o Select Add Candidate to add everything that is able to be pinged to the Discovery Manager Candidates tab from where you select specific candidates to add to the Device Manager. No data is collected from candidates and the Discovery Action column displays Add Candidate. 5. Select the Check SNMP check box to validate that the device/candidate is enabled to send SNMP data to SevOne NMS. 6. Click Schedule to display the Scan time pop-up. www.sevone.com 21
a. Click the Days tabs to scan the network on the dates that appear with a darker shade. b. Click the Time Zone drop-down and select a time zone. c. Click the Start Time drop-down and select the time to start the scan. d. Click Add to add the scan time to the Selected list. e. Repeat the scan time steps to add additional scan times. Each scan time must be unique. f. Click Save to save the Scan Time and close the pop-up. 7. To create an IP address range, select the IP Address Range option. a. In the Start IP Address field, enter the low end of the IP address range. b. In the End IP Address field, enter the high end of the IP address range. 8. To create a subnet block, select the Subnet Block option. a. In the IP Address field, enter an IP address. b. In the Subnet Mask field, enter a subnet mask. 9. Select the Create Device Group for Subnet check box to create a device group for the devices you add to SevOne NMS as a result of the scan for the subnet. 10. Click Add to add the block or range to the list to watch. 11. Repeat the previous steps to create additional ranges. 12. Click Next. Technologies When you enable devices to send data to SevOne NMS, default settings enable you to monitor many of the technologies on the devices you add to SevOne NMS. SNMP and VMware require you to enter some information about your network. www.sevone.com 22
Startup Wizard Technologies Page SNMP The SNMP subtab on the Technologies wizard page enables you to enter the community strings SevOne NMS needs to monitor SNMP data. 1. In either the Read Only Strings column or the Read/Write Strings column click Add to add a new line to the list. 2. In the text field, enter the string and click Update to add the string. 3. Click or to move the string up or down through the list. You can update these settings on the Cluster Manager Cluster Settings tab. VMware The VMware vcenter subtab enables you to enter the VMware vcenter login credentials. The VMware Browser enables you to add additional vcenters and to manage the devices from which to poll VMware data. 1. In the VMware vcenter IP Address field, enter the IP address of the VMware vcenter. 2. In the Device Name field, enter the name of the VMware vcenter. 3. In the Username field, enter the user name SevOne NMS needs to authenticate onto the vcenter. www.sevone.com 23
4. In the Password field, enter the password SevOne NMS needs to authenticate onto the vcenter. 5. Select the Automatically Discover Devices check box to poll the vcenter's hosts and virtual machines on a daily basis. Click Next. Discovery The Discovery wizard page enables you to set the time for SevOne NMS to perform the daily Automatic Discovery process, to define the email server that SevOne NMS uses to email reports and alerts, and to create the user accounts for the users who are members of the Administrators user role. Startup Wizard Discovery Page Click the Run the Automatic Discovery daily at drop-downs and select the time to run the Automatic Discovery process. You can update the Automatic Discovery time on the Cluster Manager - Peer Settings tab. Email Server The middle section enables you to enter the email server information for SevOne NMS to use to notify users of alerts and to send reports to users. Note: The email server must be able to accept large attachments because a.pdf report can be over 20MB. www.sevone.com 24
1. In the Email Server field, enter the hostname or IP address of the SMTP email server for SevOne NMS to use to send emails. 2. In the Username field, enter the user name SevOne NMS needs to authenticate onto the email server. 3. In the Password field, enter the password SevOne NMS needs to authenticate onto the email server. 4. Click the Connection Security drop-down and select a connection security protocol. 5. In the Port field, enter the port on the email server for SevOne NMS to use. 6. In the Test Email Address field, enter the email address to which you want to send a test email. 7. Click Send Test Email to send a test email to the address you enter in the previous step. You can update these settings on the Cluster Manager Cluster Settings tab. Administration Users The lower section enables you to add users who are to be members of the Administrators user role. You must define the email server before you can add Administrator role users and you add all other users with any other user roles on the User Role Manager. 1. Click Add User to add a line to the list. 2. In the Username field, enter the name for the user to enter into the Username field on the Login page. After you save the user information, you cannot edit the Username. 3. In the First Name field, enter the first name to appear wherever a user name appears. 4. In the Last Name field, enter the last name to appear wherever a user name appears. 5. In the Email Address field, enter the email address where you want SevOne NMS to send emails to the user. 6. Click Update to save the user credentials. SevOne NMS sends an email to the user with the user's log on credentials. Click Finish to start the scan of any subnets you define on the Scan Subnets wizard page and to display the Setup is Complete wizard page. Setup is Complete The Setup is Complete wizard page provides links to additional help topics that describe how to create Device Groups, how to Manage Users, and how to Manage Reports. www.sevone.com 25

6. Change Admin Password You should change the admin user password to protect access to the SevOne NMS application. Welcome Dashboard 1. Click the Manage Users link to display the User Manager (or Administration > Access Configuration > User Manager). 2. Click next to the admin user to display a pop-up. 3. In the Password field, enter a new password for the admin user. 4. In the Confirm field, re-enter the password. 5. Click Save. www.sevone.com 27
7. Other Implementation Considerations During an initial SevOne NMS implementation you should define the following settings. See the online help User Roles for details. Administration > Access Configuration > User Role Manager User roles enable you to restrict user access to workflows, devices, and users. Device Groups Devices > Grouping > Device Groups Device groups enable you to segment the devices in your network for user access, reports, and alerts. Auto-grouping rules enable you to automatically assign devices to device groups. Reports Reports > Report Manager SevOne NMS provides a starter set of reports to help with your implementation. Policies Events > Configuration > Policy Browser SevOne NMS provides a starter set of policies to trigger thresholds and alerts upon device discovery. www.sevone.com 28
