Symantec Endpoint Encryption (SEE Client) Installation Instructions Version 8.2 Warning: This software is labor intensive, therefore it is important to validate that the hard drive is healthy by first validating that all fragmented data and viruses have been removed. Then you should also verify that there are no bad sectors on the drive prior to installation. As part of the installation, we have included steps for conducting the proper system checks; it is vital that these are completed prior to installation. When prompted, please follow the instructions for these system checks. Back up your data as a precaution before continuing to install this software. 1. Please refer to the System Requirements before beginning this installation. Failure to do so will result in potential system damage and/or data loss. You will also need to know whether you have Windows 32-bit or 64-bit prior to installation. To verify this, click on the Windows Start menu, rightclick on the option for Computer, and then choose Properties. You will then see a window like the one below. 2. Click on the file labeled SEE32.exe, or SEE64.exe according to your Windows System type identified in step 1. Rev: 3-1-12
3. You will see the following screen; No action is necessary here. 4. The screen below is a reminder to run the prerequisites. If you need instructions for doing so, click No. If you have already run the Windows Scan Disk and Defrag, then click Yes. If you click No, you will see the screen below. Clicking Yes will take you to Step #6. 5. Click the OK button here to continue to the health check prerequisite instructions. These will open in a new Window in Microsoft Word.
6. Click OK to continue after completing the prerequisite health check. 7. No action is necessary on the screen shown below. However, you will have to click Yes in the box when you receive the User Access Control window as shown below.
8. The SEE Client Framework will be the first of two clients to install. No action is required here. 9. In this step, you will see another User Access Control window. Click Yes to continue to the second client installation for the Full Disk Client.
10. You will need to restart Windows now. Click Yes to continue this installation. 11. After rebooting, this screen will appear. NOTE: You will only be able to restart your computer three times before this step will be required before launching Windows. Click Register Now to continue.
12. NOTE: It s important to make note of the userid appearing in the far right hand corner. This will be the userid you will use when logging in again. It may be different than the one you use to log into ULink. Write this down so you can refer to it when you log in the next time. As indicated below, you will set the password to access SEE here. This password will NOT automatically synchronize with Active Directory/ULink. However, if you plan to use the same password as ULink, simply make a note to remind yourself that, when the ULink password changes, you will also have to log into SEE and change it there so they match. You can change this password anytime you are logged in by opening the Symantec Endpoint Encryption Client found in your programs list. Set your password as indicated below and then click OK to finish.
13. The screen below is an important part of the client set-up. It will allow you to reset your own passwords should you forget them. It s important to make the answers to these questions simple and easy to remember. They are case-sensitive, so we recommend that you use one-word answers and always use lower-case letters. It s also easier if you use the same answer for every question, as seen in the example below. Fill in the questions and answers, and then click OK to continue.
14. The next screen indicates that the client installation and registration is now complete. (Click the Finish button.) However, since the machine is now beginning the encryption process, DO NOT POWER OFF THE MACHINE until this is completed. The next step will show you how to validate the encryption process. 15. If you click on the Encryption option on the left-hand side of this window, you can see how many drives your machine has and the status of the encryption process. There is no action required here. However, you will need to validate that your machine has power during this process. NOTE: The machine may run slower during this process, and you may experience a noticeable performance change or slow response. This will improve after the encryption process is completed.
16. NOTE: You can only re-boot the machine three times before the registration process will be required before allowing you to log into Windows. Therefore, it is recommended that you complete the registration process immediately after installation. Once registration is completed, you will be prompted to log in the next time the machine is restarted. The log in screen will look like the one below. Simply hold down the Alt, Control and Delete buttons. 17. Next, you will see a screen like the one below. Here you will enter the userid identified in step 11. If the machine is in Active Directory, then you will see the option for AD under the choices for the Domain. You will need to choose this option before you will be able to log in.
Helpful Hints 1. To open this program, simply go to the Windows Start menu as seen below, and click on the folder labeled Symantec Endpoint Encryption Client. 2. Uninstalling the SEE client will not decrypt your machine. Only IT has the ability to decrypt a machine once it has been encrypted. However, in some cases it is possible for IT to do this remotely. Contact the IT HelpDesk for assistance at 852-7997 or helpdesk@louisville.edu. Once the machine is decrypted, you will need to remove the SEE client by going to Add/Remove programs or Programs and Features, listed under the Windows Control Panel. You will then need to remove both clients as seen below, one labeled Symantec Endpoint Encryption Framework Client and the other labeled Symantec Endpoint Encryption Full Disk Edition Client.
