BACHELOR OF HUMAN SCIENCES IN HISTORY AND CIVILIZATION COURSE SYNOPSES Introduction to History and Civilization Course Code HIST 1000 This course introduces students to basic concepts and approaches in the fields of history and civilization. It also deals with the emergence and development of human civilizations, and their interaction with each others through time and space. Rise and Spread of Islam to 132 AH Course Code HIST 1020 This course begins with a brief review of the world in the sixth century C.E., with special reference to the socio-political and religious situation in Pre- Islamic Arabia. It discusses the life and career of the Prophet Muhammad (saw) and his contributions to the establishment of the ummah and the Islamic state. It examines the period of the Khulafa Rashidun (Rightly Guided Caliphs) and the territorial expansion of the Islamic state. Attention is paid to the fitnah that resulted in the division of the ummah and the collapse the Rightly Guided Caliphate in 41 AH/661 CE. It finally deals with the period of the Umayyad Caliphate, highlighting its major achievements and drawbacks. Islam in the Malay World Course Code HIST 1100 This course examines the advent and spread of Islam in the Malay world and its impact on the socio-economic, political and educational institutions. It discusses the development of Islamic thought in the Malay world from 16 th to 19 th centuries, and highlights the ideas and contributions of prominent reformist movements and figures in the region. History & Civilization of Medieval Europe Course Code HIST 2510 This course surveys the main features and historical developments in the Dark Ages, the Byzantine Empire, the Barbarian and Roman Catholic West from the 5 th to the 15 th century CE. It examines the rise of the Church Militant, and the growth of towns and universities. Special attention will be paid to feudalism, warfare and Crusades. History of Malaysia II Course Code HIST 3020 This course surveys Malaysian history from independence to Mahathir era (1981-2003). It examines main socio-economic, cultural, and political developments in Malaysian society and highlights Malaysia s role in regional and international politics.

Course Code HIST 3070 History Of Russia And Muslim Eurasia This course discusses the rise, decline and restoration of Russian and Eurasian civilizations. It examines the Mongol supremacy in Russian principalities and the Russian tsarist autocracy in the modern times. Both the Russian conquest of the Eurasian states and Muslim resistance will be highlighted. History of the Ayyubids and Mamluks Course Code HIST 3110 This course deals with the political history of the eastern Mediterranean lands from the eve of the First Crusade in the late eleventh century to the Ottoman conquest of Syria and Egypt. It examines the political situation in the Muslim World before the outbreak of the crusades. It highlights the history of the Ayyubid (1171-1250) and Mamluk (1250-1717) Sultanates and their contribution to the enrichment of Islamic civilization. Special attention is paid to their socio-economic, religious and cultural institutions, and the impact of the Crusade wars on the eastern Mediterranean lands. India Under the Sultans and Mughals Course Code HIST 3250 This course gives an account of Muslims contact with India since the conquest of Sindh by Muhammad bin Qasim. It deals with the Ghazni dynasty, the Ghurid conquest of North India, the establishment of Delhi sultanate, and the Mughal rule. It discusses the socio-cultural and economic impact of Muslims in India, and examines their influence in Southeast Asia. Islam in Modern Southeast Asia Course Code HIST 3320 This course surveys the historical development of Muslim communities in Southeast Asia in the 20 th century. It examines major issues such as the codification of Islamic law, administration of religious institutions, modernization and nationhood. Indonesian History From 1500 C.E. Course Code HIST 3350 none China and Japan Since 1800 C.E. Course Code HIST 3360 This course provides an overview of the history of China and Japan in the 19 th and the 20 th centuries. It highlights the significant events that led to the emergence of China and Japan as East Asian powers. It discusses their foreign relations and involvement in international political discourse.

Course Code HIST 3410 Islāh and Tajdīd Movements in the Muslim World IÎlÉh / TajdÊd, or reform and revival activities in the Muslim world, is indeed an important and ongoing phenomenon in Islamic history. Prophet Muhamed (s.a.w.) is reputed as al MuÎlih al- c AÐim (Reformer Par Excellence) and al-kulafé al-rashidën (The Rightly - Quided Caliphs) had their distinguished contribution in this respect. Whenever a Muslim society experiences decay, there will be reformers calling for the removal of al-bida c (un-islamic practices) and the return with Islam to its original purity. This course looks into the contribution of some early Mujaddids, but the emphasis will be on the history of the movement since the 18th century. HIST 3750 Course Code Muslim Historiography This course deals with the Quranic concept of history, the role of isnad in hadith methodology, the writing of the biography of the Prophet and the emergence of Muslim historiography. It emphasizes the development of Muslim historiography from al-tabari to the contributions of contemporary historians. Special attention is paid to the techniques and analysis of primary sources. History of the United States Course Code HIST 4150 This course is a historical survey of the history of the United States from the age of exploration to the end of the Cold War, emphasizing major political, social, economic and cultural issues and traditions. It also discusses American foreign policy and its relations with the Muslim world. Course Code HIST 4210 History of Islamic Civilization in Sub-Saharan Africa This course refutes the long-held eurocentric myth that Africa has no history worth of knowing or studying before its extensive contract with Europe in the late 19 th century. It gives a birds-eye-view on the spread and impact of Islam in Sub-Saharan Africa in general, and BilÉd al-sëdén (Sudanic Belt) in particular. It also studies some of the JihÉd movements of the 18 th and 19 th centuries in the Sudanic Belt and review the scholarship and role of their leaders. Modern Southeast Asian History Course Code HIST 4350 This course deals with the history of Southeast Asia during the 19 th and 20 th centuries. It highlights European colonialism, the rise of nationalism and independence. It focuses on socio-economic transformation, foreign interests in the region and the emergence of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Islamic Civilization Course Code HIST 4420 This course defines the concept of Islamic civilization and its contributions to humanity. It examines the development of Muslim administrative, economic, military and educational institutions, and their impact on other civilizations. It also highlights the challenges and prospects of Islamic civilization. Rise And Fall of Civilizations Course Code HIST 4820 This course provides a critical historical survey of Muslim and Western interpretations of the rise and fall of civilizations with special emphasis on the historical references in the Quran. It studies the special characteristics of major world civilizations including Indian, Chinese, Greek, Muslim and Western, highlights the underlying factors for their rise and fall. It also emphasizes the importance of co-existence and dialogue between civilizations. Relations Between The Muslim World And Medieval Europe Course Code HIST 2540 This course discusses the historical interaction and relations between the Medieval Europe and the Muslim world from 7 th to 15 th centuries. It highlights the causes of religious and cultural conflicts between the two regions, and examines the influence of Muslim civilization in Europe. Research Methodology Course Code HIST 2999 This course provides an overview of qualitative and quantitative approaches to research. It is designed to introduce students to a variety of concepts and issues in social research including the relationship between theory and research, formulation of research problem and hypothesis, measurement process, sampling, data collection techniques and data analysis. Osmanli History Course Code HIST 3120 This course examines the emergence of Osmanli sultanate, its expansion in Europe, Asia Minor, West Asia and North Africa. It discusses its relations with the European and Muslim (Safavid and Mamluk) powers, and highlights the impact of European imperialism on the socio-political and economic structure of the Osmanli Devlet in the 18 th and 19 th centuries. Special attention is paid to the causes of its decline and abolition of the Caliphate in the 20 th century. Modern History of Europe Course Code HIST 3150 This course surveys historical developments in Europe from 18 th century to the present. It concentrates on the Enlightenment, the French Revolution, the Industrial revolution, the two World Wars and the Cold War. Special attention will be paid to social and political developments.

Colonialism in the Muslim World Course Code HIST 3260 This course examines the history of European colonialism in the Muslim world from the voyages of discovery and the conquest of Malacca in the sixteenth century to the era of decolonialization in the 1950s and 1960s. Particular emphasis will be placed on relevant historical debates on the expansion, consolidation, management and disintegration of the modern European empires and their impact on the Muslim world. It also discusses the Islamic and secular nationalist resistances to European imperialism, and the phases of struggle for independence of Muslim nation states. Modern History of the Arab World Course Code HIST 4070 This course deals with the modern history of the Arab world and discusses various topics including the history of the Arab lands under Osmnali rule, the emergence of semi-autonomous states and revivalist movements in the Arab lands, European Imperialism in the Arab lands, the rise of national consciousness and nationalist movements in the Arab lands, the emergence and development of the Arab nation states, the Palestinian issue, and US and Soviet foreign policies affecting the Arab World. The course also fosters a critical attitude towards sources and provides a context in which students can apply skills and concepts acquired in other core courses. Survey of Ancient Civilizations Course Code HIST 2110 This course gives a general survey of the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Indian, Greek, China and Mesoamerica. It focuses on the cultural, religious, socio-economic, political and other characteristics. Topic includes development of writing, city-states, science and technology and highlights the underlying factors for their rise and fall, its impact on societies, and trade contacts. The course also introduces broad features of each civilization. DEPARTMENTAL CORE COURSES (57 CREDIT HOURS) Muslim Nations In Contemporary History Course Code HIST 4130 This course traces the emergence of independent Muslim nation-states, and their impact on socio-political and ideological structure of Muslim society. It examines the relationship between the West and Muslim nation states during the Cold War. It highlights the role of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), its functions, structures, problems and prospects in the era of globalization. SUPPORTIVE COURSES (12 CREDIT HOURS) Survey of Greco-Roman History and Civilization Course Code HIST 2115 This course surveys the history of Greco-Roman civilization and its impact on the Mediterranean from 1200 BCE to 300 CE. It examines Greek everyday life, culture, mythology, Greek colonization and Hellenization of the Orient and the Occident, and highlights the impact of Greco-Roman civilization on both Christian and Islamic heritage. It also reviews the Roman history and civilization from the foundation of the city of Roma Vetis to its fall to the Germanic Barbarians in 476 CE. Special attention will be paid to the status of Jews and Christians and the decline of the empire.

History of the Maghrib and Andalus Course Code HIST 2210 This course discusses the history of the Maghrib and Andalusia from the Roman era to the fall of Granada and its political aftermath. It highlights the political development of Muslim states in the Maghrib and Andalusia, and their relations with other Muslim communities and European powers. It also examines the influence of Muslim civilization of Andalusia on Europe, and underlines the collapse of Muslim rule and its political consequences in the region. LIST OF COURSES 1. It secondly highlights the origins of Islamic civilization, its distinctive features, and interaction with ancient and contemporary civilizations. It also explores the factors of the emergence and decline of civilizations.
