1 History Major Application and Information Undergraduate Coordinator Judy Yonkin 450 McGraw Hall Included in this packet: 1. Requirements for Major (Green) 2. History Major Application (Blue) 3. Checklist for History major requirements (Yellow) 4. List of History Faculty and their specializations (Orange) What to do: 1. Fill out the information on the blue information sheet. 2. Choose an advisor that you would like to work with from the Faculty Specialization Sheet. (Their office hours are posted outside 450 McGraw Hall. We do not make appointments for Professors please them directly.) 3. Have your new History advisor sign the blue form and date it. 4. Please return the completed and signed blue form to Judy in 450 McGraw Hall. 5. The yellow sheet that you and your advisor work with to determine what courses have fulfilled the major is for you and your advisor. I do not need to have this back. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Judy Yonkin. Students who are interested in information on Honors in the History Major, please see Judy Yonkin for separate application/info.
2 Requirements for the History Major 9 history courses (with a grade of C or better) 3 of the nine courses must be in history before 1800 (Courses that fulfill the Arts & Sciences historical breadth requirement do not necessarily fulfill the History pre-1800 requirement.) 4 of the nine courses must be courses categorized as outside of U.S. History 2 of the nine courses must be seminars, and one of these seminars must be a 4000-level seminar. HIST 4000, 4001, 4002 and service-learning level courses may not be used to fulfill the 4000-level seminar requirement. Note: a single course may count to fulfill more than one of the requirements. For example, a course in medieval European history would count as both a course in history before 1800 and as a course outside of American History. A list of courses designated as pre-1800 and outside U.S. History is posted at the History office (450 McGraw Hall) and on our website. Note: Students are only allowed to petition for a total of THREE courses outside of the Department of History to be counted towards the major s requirements. Requirements for the History Minor Separate application available 5 history courses (only courses offered or cross listed in the department of History) All five courses must be taken as letter grades, with a grade of C or better, and either 3 or 4 credits each 1 of the 5 must be a seminar at the 2000 level or above First-year writing seminars/independent Study courses do not count for the minor Transfer or study abroad credits are NOT eligible for consideration Requirements for Honors in History See Judy for separate application packet 10 history courses (with a grade of C or better), which include: History 4000 (Honors Proseminar), taken in junior year. Majors wishing to continue to HIST 4001 are required to find a thesis supervisor by May 1 st of their Junior year. History 4001/History 4002 (counted as one course), History 4001 (Honors Guidance: Thesis Research) taken during the fall semester and History 4002 (Honors Guidance: Thesis Writing) taken during the spring semester of senior year. At least a 3.5 average within the History department. 3 of the ten courses must be in history before of the ten courses must be outside of U.S. History. 2 of the ten courses, must be seminars. One of these seminars must be a 4000-level seminar. HIST 4001, 4002 and service-learning 4000-level courses may not be used to fulfill the 4000-level seminar requirement. Note: History majors who wish both to study abroad (or in Cornell-in-Washington) and to enter the honors program should consult their advisors or the DUS as soon as possible after declaring a major. The department requires honors students to enroll in History 4000 before writing a thesis in their senior year and cannot enroll simultaneously in 4000 and 4001 (the first term of thesis-writing). So planning ahead is essential, especially if you intend to spend a full year abroad.
