Overview Countries with undiversified export structure are plausibly more vulnerable to external shocks. But difficult to evaluate causal influence of export concentration on external volatility (exchange rate, terms of trade, export growth) Use of a new instrument that is based entirely on geographic characteristics, and thus plausibly uncorrelated with other determinants, including institutions, income, and policies.
