HISTORICAL SKETCH The Indianapolis Life Insurance Company was started by three brothers: Charles, George and Joseph Raub, along with Frank Manly and Albert Goslee as a mutual (policy owner owned) company. Indianapolis Life specialized in individual life, annuity, and disability and had policyholder in most of the United States although most of its business was done in Indiana and surrounding states. By the 1990s it was the state s third largest insurance company. The company was originally located at the Indianapolis Traction Terminal before moving to the Board of Trade Building in 1907, then to the former mansion of Vice-President Charles Warren Fairbanks at 30 th and Meridian Streets in 1923 where it remained with several renovations. In October, 2008, Indianapolis Life was merged into Aviva Life and Annuity Company and ceased to operate under that name. Sources: Encyclopedia of Indianapolis. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE Materials in the Indianapolis Life Insurance collection includes historical information, policyholder materials and financial records, company operations, Fairbanks house materials, publications and advertising, and photographs. Historical materials include several company and individual histories, scrapbooks, and the Articles of Incorporation from July, 1905. Policyholder information includes cards with policy information, stock certificates, rate books, medical examiners book, lists of life members and first policyholder, policy register, rejection register and renewal premiums. Financial records contain deposit slips and vouchers, cash book, accounts paid book, and a death claim register. Among the records of the company s operations are payroll ledgers and books, procurement manual, company documents and Frank Manly s correspondence form 1934. The collection contains a significant amount of information on its corporate headquarters when it was located in the Charles Fairbanks house from 1923 2008. Included are articles, newspaper clippings and histories on the house as well as some information on renovations. Printed materials include various publications issued by Indianapolis Life such as newsletters, annual reports, awards, informational brochures, 500 Festival Mini-Marathon information, advertising scrapbooks, publications for the firm s Counselors Club and advertisements. The photographs include several views of the Fairbanks House Corporate Headquarters, employee activities such as picnic, golf outings, parties, and charitable service. There are also several individual portraits of company leaders and board members.
