1 Welcome! On behalf of Splash! Publications, we would like to welcome you to Leveled Math: Addition Book 1, one of several books in our Primary Series. Since this curriculum was designed by teachers, we are positive that you will find it to be a comprehensive program for teaching and reinforcing basic addition facts for students in grades 1-3. We would like to take a few moments to familiarize you with Leveled Math: Addition Book 1. Leveled Math As the title suggests, Leveled Math: Addition Book 1 presents basic addition facts through 18 in three levels. A leveled Math program helps you differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students on all three tiers of the RTI (Response to Intervention) model. Level 1 is the easiest and should be assigned to students who are new to the concept or need more manipulative work. Level 2 is a bit more difficult. Depending on your grade level and the ability of your students, Level 2 will most likely be assigned to the majority of your class. Level 3 adds more problems for your most capable students. The answers to all leveled practice pages are located on pages Center or Whole Group Leveled Math: Addition Book 1 can be utilized as a Center or in a Whole Group setting. Again, differentiating your instruction helps target the specific academic needs of each student. If you decide to use the unit in a Math Center, we suggest creating three different colored folders, one for each level. A circle of matching color can be placed on each child s desk, letting the child know which folder to use in the Center. The same page can be assigned more than once to increase speed. Pages can also be laminated and completed with a dry-erase marker to save paper. Leveled Math: Addition Book i
2 The Games Each basic skill in Leveled Math: Addition Book 1 is reinforced with a game. The games are designed to be used with students of all levels and should be assigned after the leveled practice pages are completed. If you have parent helpers in your classroom, we suggest having them make and laminate two or three sets of each game ahead of time so you will have multiple sets to use as a Whole Group activity or in your Math Center. In addition, you could send students home with a copy of each game to make and play at home. No matter how you choose to use the games, we suggest that you teach each game to the whole class first with the teacher acting as Player A and the class pretending to be Player B. As soon as students understand how to play the game, it can be added to the Center or Game area for practice and review. Each game includes an answer sheet so students can self check themselves.
