A work program is the school s plan of how the course will be delivered and assessed, based on the school s interpretation of the syllabus. The school s work program must meet syllabus requirements, and indicate that there will be sufficient scope and depth of student learning to reflect the general objectives and meet the exit criteria and standards. Course organisation 1.1 Time allocation The minimum number of hours of timetabled school time, including assessment for the course of study, is 55 hours per semester. 1.2 Course overview The two-year course will be delivered within four contexts Graphic design, Animation, Web design and Multimedia. The course of study blends the content of the five elements. 1.3 Course outline The following tables show how the subject will be delivered and are subject to change. The time allocation for the programmed study of Information Technology Systems (ITS) is 5 x 50 minute periods per six day cycle (1 cycle = 250 minutes). A semester consists of 15 cycles, including testing time. Therefore, the total time allocation over the two-year course is 60 cycles. Queensland Studies Authority April 2012 3

Year 11 Semester 1 Context: Elements: Dimensions assessed: Time: Assessment technique: Graphic design Theory and techniques, Problem-solving process, Project management, Client relationships, Social and ethical issues Knowledge and communication, Design and development, Implementation and evaluation 55 hours Product: Project and practical exercise Dimensions and objectives Knowledge and communication The dimension Knowledge and communication refers to comprehending, understanding and communicating the terms, concepts, principles and design processes associated with graphic design. This dimension involves demonstrating IT knowledge through defining, explaining and using graphic design terms, concepts and principles. Explaining involves communicating a meaning with clarity, precision and completeness and is enhanced by the use of examples. Graphic design terms, concepts, principles and design processes are communicated and documented using appropriate modes, genres and language conventions. Mode refers to a system of communication chosen as the way to transmit a message (e.g. written, spoken/signed, visual or auditory). Genre refers to accepted categories of texts. Genres have features and patterns that relate to context, purpose and audience. Language conventions refers to accepted language practices developed over time and generally used and understood, for example use of spelling, punctuation and grammar. Design and development The dimension Design and development involves determining the intended purpose, the needs of the client and proposing and testing possible graphic design solutions. It requires research, analysis, synthesis and ongoing testing related to the process of design and development and the associated documentation. Analysis refers to dissecting client needs and scenarios to ascertain and examine constituent parts and/or their relationships. Synthesis refers to assembling the results of the analysis into a coherent, unique and/or complex system or solution. Solutions to the graphic design challenge are enhanced by progressive development and testing of components through the design process to refine solutions. By the conclusion of the graphic design unit of study, students should: analyse client needs, purpose and scenarios to inform the design plan synthesise information to design solutions develop and test components to refine solutions. Implementation and evaluation The dimension Implementation and evaluation focuses on the quality of the solution. The quality and effectiveness of the solution is to be evaluated against the client needs and the defined criteria formulated during the design and development phase. This dimension examines the use and refinement of the developer s skills throughout the design and development phase to present a graphic design solution. It involves reflection on actions taken, design and development contexts, inputs, processes and products applied through all stages of planning and development. Evaluation refers to assigning merit according to criteria. By the conclusion of the graphic design unit of study, students should: use technical skills and resources to present a solution evaluate the solution against the defined criteria using the contexts, inputs, processes and products (CIPP) model of evaluation. Problem-solving process Use the DDE cycle modelled through the design, development and evaluation of the product to: produce a client brief create project management documentation develop a disaster recovery plan provide concept roughs provide mock-ups incorporate feedback from client on designs develop the product include screen captures to document the development phase test the product by printing on different media and on more than one colour printer to ensure the quality of the product is acceptable when printed. Learning experiences Use a variety of images to identify and define the principles of graphic design. Explain the different graphic file types and sizes and identify the purposes of each. Analyse how different graphic file types are used for different purposes. Prepare a comparative table to summarise the analysis. Source images from the internet and stock images (from magazines), take own photographs or scan photographs. Optimise these images through a batch process in Fireworks or Photoshop. Use Adobe Bridge to manage and organise graphic elements and illustrations. Define and use the software interfaces used for graphic design, e.g. InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator. Compare and contrast raster and vector images to identify the differences between the two graphic types. Analyse how intellectual property, copyright and digital rights management impact design solutions. Use industry standard software to learn and develop the practical skills needed to create graphic design solutions. Deconstruct the project development model, using an existing client brief, documentation and product, to identify its different phases. Invite a graphic designer to present a workshop for students on the principles of design and communicating/building effective client relationships. Following the workshop: summarise and explain the principles of design that are used when creating graphical elements analyse the client s needs to present a design plan for creating a CD cover use project management software, e.g. a Gantt chart, and prepare a timeline which highlights the key phases of the project synthesise the information gathered to design concept roughs and mock-ups to present to the client develop and test the CD cover components in order to refine final design test the graphic elements by printing them on various types of paper and using different printers to ensure the quality and colour is appropriate for the client needs develop a series of evaluation questions to ask the client about the effectiveness of the design of the CD cover develop a brief client presentation where you present your final CD cover design outlining the key considerations which impacted on your design evaluate, with teacher guidance, the CD cover using the CIPP model of evaluation. 12 Information Technology Systems (2012) Sample work program
