The benefits for your business. Although always-on access, high-speed delivery and the ability to send and download large data files are all key benefits of broadband, there are other significant business advantages too. Short-term and long-term savings. A fixed rate charge means companies like yours can have Internet and e-mail access whenever they want, which could mean huge cost savings. You can connect up to 20 computers with one line so there s no need to pay for multiple phone or data lines. Added productivity. In business, time is money. Business Broadband from BT can help to reduce the time your employees spend searching for information and transferring data files. Send and receive large files much more quickly than standard dial-up. Always-on Internet and voice calls on one line. Download and upload even complex multimedia files, fast. Respond to customers and suppliers immediately, with always-on e-mail. *Depending upon the number of lines used and frequency of use. Normal phone call charges and line rentals apply. Broadband makes life easier and a lot more convenient for our staff. I simply couldn t imagine life without it. Richard Brucciani, Pal International Ltd Budget more effectively in advance, as fixed rate helps avoid surprise bills at the end of the quarter. Save money on couriers and employee time, as rather than physically transporting documents they can be sent via e-mail instead. Our clients are all over the country broadband allows us to have rich media communications with them and meet tight deadlines we ve saved about 4,500 a year on couriers. Russell Henderson, 55 Degrees 3 4

Extra flexibility means added efficiency. If your employees are out of the main office, it s vital they have a fast, convenient and reliable way to keep in touch. Combine BT Broadband Teleworker with high-speed broadband access and your staff will not only connect faster, but also smarter. Teleworker lets your people connect to your main office network securely, from anywhere that a suitable Internet connection is available. Staff won t spend time and money travelling and can access business resources when they need them. They ll work more efficiently, effectively and flexibly. We began looking for a solution that would cut our costs. BT Broadband Teleworker has reduced our bills by around 40% and given us speed, connectivity and scalability too you can t help but be pleased at that. Martin Southam, Derwent Housing Association We work for many big companies. Having broadband puts us on an equal footing with them. Paul Flanagan, Cybernetic Productions Access to more customers. Broadband can help businesses like yours exploit new markets and extend access to customers using the Internet. The broadband technology has had a huge impact on our business, saving time and money and really helping to drive efficiency and customer service levels. The company couldn t function in the same way now without it. Richard Brucciani, Pal International Ltd The potential of a simple multiple-site network. With broadband you can take advantage of communication facilities that were, in the past, only available to larger companies. You can connect your branch sites to your head office, and set up a broadband enabled office network to share and transfer company data. For connection call BT on Freefone 0800 028 0530 5 6

Your questions answered. What is the difference between a broadband line and an ordinary phone line? The line is identical. Broadband transforms your existing telephone line into a high-speed digital line. It repackages the data and sends it at high frequency at the same time as voice calls. For the self-install product, all you need is a microfilter to separate the voice and data, and a modem or network adapter. Alternatively, an engineer can install broadband at your premises.* What do I need to get started with Business Broadband from BT? It s really very simple. Just call BT, we will confirm that you are in an ADSL enabled area and carry out some line tests. If the line tests are successful, we will progress your order and carry out the work at the exchange. Then, depending on the product that you have ordered, you will either receive a self-install starter kit through the post or confirmation of the date when an engineer will come to your premises to provide installation.* Will I need a new telephone line to use broadband? No. Broadband can work using your existing telephone line. Using the 2Mbps service, data can be sent up to 40x faster than a dial-up connection. (However, all installations are subject to survey and availability.) Do I need additional security? We always recommend customers take adequate security precautions when connecting to the Internet. BT can provide expert advice on whether additional or new security measures will be needed when users switch to broadband. How do I choose the right package for my business? Speed Speeds range from up to 500 to 2,000 kilobytes per second (kbps). 500kbps is suitable for smaller businesses that use e-mail and lightly surf the web. File Sharing Connect two to four computers with BT Business Broadband Share 500. Networking Network more than four computers with BT Business Broadband Network range, allowing you to connect up to four computers to the Internet within your office. It also gives your staff permanent, fast Internet access. Whatever the size of your business, BT has the solution that s right for you. Visit www.bt.com/business/broadband to discuss your requirements. Will an engineer need to install broadband in my business? The choice is yours. We offer a range of products that you can either install yourself, or if you prefer, you can leave it to one of our engineers.* Will I need a new computer system? Not if your computer meets the minimum technical requirements. You can view these at www.bt.com/business/broadband *Charges apply to engineer installation. Minimum computer specification applies. For connection: call BT on Freefone 0800 028 0530 15 For further information on our security products, please turn to page 12 of this guide. 16

Broadband jargon explained. ADSL ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. It s the technology BT uses to turn a normal telephone line into a high-speed digital line capable of supporting broadband services. It can be used for downloading information from the Internet or sharing information between offices. It is always-on and is charged at a flat rate. Always-on A connection to the Internet that is permanently available and ready for use. By contrast, a typical modem connection needs to be manually initiated (dialled-up) each time you wish to use it. ASP An Application Service Provider is a company that rents access to software and services that businesses might otherwise purchase and configure for themselves. Web hosting is the most common service offered by ASPs, although they also offer more complex services such as payment systems. Bandwidth This is the rate at which data can be passed through a network connection. For example, a broadband ADSL connection provides up to 40x more bandwidth than a normal dial-up connection. This means that, for example, web pages will appear more quickly when accessed over a broadband connection. Broadband Broadband is a way of sending information through a single pipe that is large enough or has enough bandwidth to carry several channels simultaneously. For instance, for data, video and audio, broadband is most commonly used to describe local connection speeds of at least 10x the speed of a normal connection. These connections are permanently on. Ethernet Ethernet is widely installed Local Area Network (LAN) technology. It is one of the most widely implemented LAN standards. ISDN Integrated Services Digital Network is an international communications standard for sending voice, video and data over digital or normal telephone lines. ISDN supports data transfer rates of 64kbps. ISP An Internet Service Provider is a company that provides access to the Internet. For a monthly fee (or with a Pay-As-You-Go service), the service provider gives you a software package, username, password and access phone number. Equipped with a modem, you can then log on to and browse the Internet and send and receive e-mail. LAN Local Area Network is a network of computers and other devices (including routers and printers), in the same geographical location. Connections are typically made over an ethernet, but can be made using wireless technologies. 17 18

Modem A modulator-demodulator is a device or program that enables a computer to transmit data over telephone lines. Computer information is stored digitally, whereas information transmitted over telephone lines is transmitted in the form of analogue waves. A modem converts between these two forms. Narrowband Generally, narrowband describes telecommunication that carries voice information in a narrow band of frequencies, typically 56kbps and below. WAN Wide Area Network is a network that connects two or more Local Area Networks (LAN) that are geographically separate. Web server A computer that is permanently connected to the Internet and delivers web pages. Every web server has an IP address and possibly a domain name. For connection:: call BT on Freefone 0800 028 0530 19
