Business Challenges The method of managing metadata and hierarchies within MetLife s financial systems had issues regarding consistency, quality, control, and auditability. These issues were due to primarily technical and functional shortcomings with information management. Some of the common problem areas that existed include: Inefficient, manual and error-prone processes for metadata management Requests are all captured on a spreadsheet Lack of control around metadata changes and additions Metadata was maintained in 10 different applications Misaligned hierarchies across platforms Limited ability to expand dynamically as business grows Inability to integrate efficiently with future financial systems due to different custom processes amongst the systems for metadata. 17

DRM Project Statistics Project team typically consists of: Project Manager 2 resources in ledger maintenance unit 1 full-time functional consultant 1 technical application developer Rollout has spanned two years with multiple phases lasting anywhere from two months (Essbase extracts) to nine months (Ledgers) Timelines are also impacted by competing financial system implementations across the Enterprise 21
DRM Statistics Metadata is managed currently by a single department based in the US and Singapore Currently use 4 main versions Versions are archived each month so there is a clear snapshot DRM houses 16 dimensions 64 hierarchies 155,000 members On average, 500 Moves, Adds and Changes are performed each month by maintenance unit, and approximately the same from the daily feed from PeopleSoft 22
Lessons Learned Successes: Metadata maintenance team was highly engaged through-out the project. They were well trained prior to going live because of their heavy involvement in building both hierarchies and exports. Planned the project in phases and established a well-defined timeline. Consultant expertise Opportunities: Rationalize trees and hierarchies prior to implementation. Gain an understanding of application functionality, e.g. webforms and sorting For new projects metadata creation needs to start in DRM rather than in the application (EPMA) Test, test and test again. 23
