SAP Business Intelligence Roadmap Key Points SAP recommends that customers adopt the new Business Objects Business Intelligence Platform for enhanced and strategic BI needs SAP will protect your investments in NW BI tools through a long term maintenance agreement that extends through 2016 All future innovation and development in BI frontend will be focused on the Business Objects BI solutions while the BI tools within NetWeaver BI will go into maintenance support The new Business Objects offering will fully leverage the NetWeaver data warehouse (BW) meaning there is no reason to disrupt current data warehouse projects Short Term - If today s SAP BI tools meets the needs of end users today, then continue down your current path Long Term - If you are looking for premium BI that goes beyond your current SAP BI frontend capabilities, then choose the Business Objects Business Intelligence Platform to meet your more strategic BI needs
Agenda Why SAP + Business Objects Business Objects Within An SAP Ecosystem SAP Business Intelligence Roadmap BI Overview at Hughes Network Systems Q&A SAP 2008 / Page 21
Overview of Business Intelligence at Hughes Network Systems Ken Hartman, Sr. Manager Business Intelligence Applications Hughes Proprietary
About HUGHES Hughes Network Systems, LLC is the global leader in providing broadband satellite networks and services for large enterprises, governments, small businesses, and consumers. Headquartered outside Washington, D.C., Hughes maintains sales and support offices worldwide. Hughes is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hughes Communications, Inc. Hughes has implemented the largest satellite broadband network for consumers in the U.S. with over 325,000 consumer and SME subscribers Shipped more than 1.5 million systems to customers in over 100 countries Over 6.5 million financial transactions processed each day by retailers and financial customers Processes purchases of over 60 million gallons of gasoline daily in over 80K pump stations globally More live video services delivered each day than ABC, NBC, and CBS combined - equivalent to shipping 34 million video tapes per month 23 H- Hughes Proprietary
Topics Where we started Where we are now Timeline: Then and Now Where we are going What the SAP/Business Objects Acquisition means to us 24 H- Hughes Proprietary
Where we started Hughes first implemented SAP in 1998 for HR/PY on release 3.1h Subsequent upgrades resulted in the implementation of additional modules We have 1,500 total users of the system, with 600 of them being ESS users only. 25 H- Hughes Proprietary
Where we started Training classes were conducted with users on how to navigate the SAP GUI and generate the reports they needed SAP-based reporting was initially standard SAP and custom ABAP only Users were limited to what reports were available outof-the-box unless they initiated a custom ABAP report which took time to develop Pilot programs to look for an alternative reporting solution were initiated in 4Q 2000 with several vendors, one was selected by 1Q H- Hughes Proprietary
Why we sought a third party reporting solution Development of ABAP reports required a specific technical expertise Wanted a rapid report development cycle ABAP programming required more time than users were willing to wait Functional areas wanted to empower their super users with the capability to generate formatted reports independent of IT involvement Wanted the ability to broadcast key reports to users who had no technical or practical knowledge of SAP Needed to provide users a more robust platform in which to interact with their data 27 H- Hughes Proprietary
Where we are now Leveraging the reporting capabilities of Business Objects to access both ERP (R/3) and BW data Generating reports from SAP ECC 6.0 and BW 7.0 architectures Reports are viewed via Hughes enterprise reporting portal 300+ SAP reports currently consumed in production are generated with Business Objects reporting solutions Currently developing new FI reports against BW data using the latest Business Objects reporting solutions 28 H- Hughes Proprietary
Timeline: Then and Now SAP Year Business Intelligence Initial implementation on release 3.1H for HR/PY. Reporting restricted to SAP report tool and customized ABAP Upgrade to 3.1I, SD and FI functionality was added. The need for a more robust reporting tool was identified. Current ABAP reporting solutions were seen as expensive and timeconsuming System was upgraded to release 4.6.C, rollout of FI/CO/MM/PP. Reporting via ABAP was limited as Crystal Reports was leveraged Nothing structured at the time of implementation Pilot programs with several vendors. Key factors in decision process: 1) must be able to run against SAP R/3, Oracle, and other data sources, and 2) ease of use. Selected Crystal Decisions (now Business Objects) with new SAP reports developed and deployed against HR, SD, MM, and PP Minor modifications to SAP. Converted 70+ ABAP reports in SD/MM/HR area to Crystal Upgrade to release Crystal Enterprise 10 and new SAP Integration Kit Minor modifications to SAP. Technical upgrade to SAP ERP 6.0 (ECC6) and deployment of BW 7.0 for financial data. Majority of non-financial R/3 reporting done with Crystal. Future development of additional BW models that will result in reports using Business Objects tools and SAP Upgraded to Business Objects Enterprise XIR2, SAP XI Integration Kit Configured BOE XIR2 to start leveraging BO presentation reporting capabilities against BW data, continuing to support existing 300+ R/3 reports Defining reporting requirements to utilize BO presentation capabilities for BW Financial reporting 29 H- Hughes Proprietary
Where we are going Continue to support traditional ERP (R/3) operational (transactional) reports using an established Business Objects toolset and delivery methodology Leverage Business Objects to create interactive Key Performance Indicator (KPI) and Dashboard reporting against ERP and BW architectures supplementing traditional SAP reporting options Exploit the reporting potential of our recent NW 7.0 implementation by utilizing the new Business Objects software to identify, analyze, and highlight historical trends to reinforce and influence forward-thinking corporate strategies 30 H- Hughes Proprietary
What the Business Objects acquisition means to us It validated our decision to select Business Objects as our reporting tool of choice for SAP and non-sap data Expect a tighter integration of Business Objects functionality with the NetWeaver BI/BW user in mind Engaging traditional SAP report users to interact with their information in a whole new way 31 H- Hughes Proprietary
