Design/build and visualization of political and social-statistics statistics geodatabase by open source tools Ferenc Speiser Post-graduate distance learning course in Geoinformatics
Contents The goals Open-source visualization Database design Web-map realization Sample system Experiments Possible applications Further developments 2007.11.16. 2/20
The goals The thesis aimed to develop a web-based based free GIS tool that gives a device to generate thematic maps for free over the Internet about Hungarian electoral-,, census-,, statistical- and voting data. Contents The design and development steps of the statistical database. The plan that is necessary for the map visualization system, fixed in a plan-documentation. With the system the opportunity presents itself to visualize data in form of choropleth maps with the assistance of open-source on-line GIS software 2007.11.16. 3/20
Data It is necessary to design a database that stores various statistical data. The main data themes in the database: National parliamentary election data 1990, 1994, 1998, 2002,, 2006 EU parliamentary election 2004. Referendum data (NATO-, EU-referendum, 2004. National binding referendum) Municipal statistical data system (TSTAR) Census data 1990, 2000 2007.11.16. 4/20
Data representation Map data for thematic mapping on the following representation levels: County level, Constituency level, Municipality level, Polling-station level Alpha-numerical tables 2007.11.16. 5/20
Base maps HD 1972 (Hungarian datum, EOV) Budapest (districts, urban districts, polling-stations) County seat s s polling-station maps Municipality borders map Map of counties National constituency map File formats: SHP DXF E00 MIF 2007.11.16. 6/20
Open Source Applications General Application FOSS4G QGis,, Grass, OSSIM, JUMP, UDig Grouping User interface Application Dev. Environment High level utilities Eclipse, QT, OpenGL GeoTools, PostGIS Data serving High level scripting languages PHP,, PERL, Python Low level utilities Shplib, GEOS, OGR/GDAL, PostGIS, R- Statistics,, GMT Data processing Low level languages C, C++, Java, Fortran System software Operation system Linux,, Darwin, Cygwin Hardware driver 32-64 bit processor drivers 2007.11.16. 7/20
Tools PostgreSQL + PostGIS (Database) FWTools (data integration) PROJ4 (Cartographic Projections library) UMN MapServer (web-map server) OPENEV (raster/vector representation) QGIS (visualization of data) 2007.11.16. 8/20
Data-integration FWTools GDAL/OGR ESRI ArcView file transformation into a common format to load into PostGIS. Conversion to shp file shp2pgsql (Loading ESRI shp to PostGIS) Running SQL script in the database 2007.11.16. 9/20
Metadata preparation FGDC (Content Standards for Digital Geospatial Metadata; FGDC-STD STD-001-1998) 1998) with the following information: Identification Information Data Quality Information Spatial Data Organization Information Spatial Reference Information Entity and Attribute Information Distribution Information Metadata Reference Information 2007.11.16. 10/20

Dimensions For the data classification it is necessary to create grouping principles. The pre-defined classification groups are the following: Thematic Time Space Data source Normalization method 2007.11.16. 14/20
Interface design Navigation through datasets Base map selection Activity diagram 2007.11.16. 15/20
Thematic maps 2007.11.16. 16/20
Experiences Open source tools are proper to solve nearly all the GIS tasks. (for the complicated tasks special knowledge is needed) INSPIRE could give the appropriate basis with creating and managing a metadata collection for the whole EU. The statistical database described in this thesis could be the part of the EU dataset as ANNEX III with the Hungarian social and political data. 2007.11.16. 17/20
Possible applications (involving users) Social Science Researchers criminology, demography, urban studies, electoral studies, regional economics,... Spatial Social Science Economics Resource management Political geography Spatial statistics Base data source for research works at universities 2007.11.16. 18/20
Further development Election SVG map Using Google Maps The possible research areas: Common and easy to use data export interface English (multi-language) language) translation of the system Loading more statistical data into the database Using the data for social statistics by web application 2007.11.16. 19/20
20/20 2007.11.16. 20/20
21/20 2007.11.16. 21/20
Questions? What was the hardest problem in the development of the sample system? Data-integration Navigation through datasets What are the opportunities to involve the users into political and social statistics applications? Develop useful and interesting applications E.g. Gerrymandering (redistricting game) 22/20
