THE LEGACY lthough Ray Hunt is widely considered the greatest and most A influential horseman of all time, he was always quick to credit to his friend and mentor Tom Dorrance. Tom told the horse s side of the story, Ray said in an interview not long after Tom s passing. He knew what the horse was going to do before the horse knew it. I d never seen anything like it and I ve never met anyone since who understands the horse the way Tom did. He had something truly special. THE LEGENDS ears before anyone called it natural horsemanship, long Y before horse whispering became big business, Ray Hunt was out there in an old pickup with a two-horse trailer, hoping to make enough gas money to get him to the next fairgrounds. I didn t see any commercial value it. If I had, I probably wouldn t have done it. From the beginning he was direct, intimidating and unapologetic about it. A lot of people found him too abrasive. But horses everywhere are better off for the approach Ray learned from Tom. The message spread and the clinics grew, as Ray traveled the world helping horses and people, and changing lives wherever he went. Eventually Ray was recognized for his achievements, but despite the well earned respect and all the adulations that finally came his way, he remained dedicated to the horse and unimpressed by fame. I couldn t care less about all that. I m in this for the horse. Together Tom and Ray changed the horse world, but with the loss of Tom in 2003 and Ray in 2009 there were concerns about how to preserve their legacy and assure that the extraordinary gift they had given us was passed on. A Legacy Of Legends grew out of this concern. It started with an annual gathering of folks who had worked closely with Tom and Ray. They wanted to assure this legacy of great horsemanship and the exchange of wisdom would continue. A program was organized to award scholarships for students to study under horsemen and horsewomen who had worked directly with Tom or Ray. Both the gathering and the scholarship program are guided by Carolyn Hunt and Buck Brannaman with the help of an advisory board. Like Tom and Ray, who continually searched for ways to make it easier or better for the horse, A Legacy Of Legends strives to provide the tools and encouragement for others to keep searching as well. Throughout his life Tom shared his understanding of horses with many others who sought his wisdom. He charged little or nothing, believing he gained as much from each experience as those who came to him for help. He had a quick mind and an exceptional memory. Although he may have preferred the company of horses to people, he never forgot a person s name. No matter how brief or how mundane the circumstances might have been, Tom could cross paths with a person forty years later and still recall their name and every detail of the initial encounter. Tom never capitalized on the natural horsemanship movement. To him the time spent with horses was reward enough. Still, his contribution did not go unnoticed. Today Tom is much revered for his almost magical way with horses and the generous and humble manner in which he shared his knowledge.

Like Ray Hunt and Tom Dorrance, we re in it for the horse... and we need your support to continue their legacy of great and compassionate horsemanship Tom and Ray worked so hard all of their lives to promote a kinder gentler way, with more consideration for how the horse feels about things, says Carolyn Hunt co-founder of A legacy of Legends. We want their teachings to keep getting passed along and shared the way they intended. The Scholarship Program Matching students with mentors Ray acknowledged a debt to the horse for all of the mistakes he made before he met Tom Dorrance, Carolyn Hunt says of the program that pairs students with mentors who directly worked with Ray or Tom. We hope to give others the same gift Tom gave Ray. They both strived to make it a better deal for the horse and we want to be sure that continues. The Gathering A loyal and growing audience The people who come are devoted to continuing the dreams that Ray and Tom had, and it s a pretty loyal following, says Buck Brannaman, a popular presenter at the gathering and co-founder of A Legacy of Legends. We want it to grow and we re gaining every year. It s a lot of work, but it s worth it to us because we don t want what Ray spent his life doing to just disappear. What we re doing, we think, is important to the horse. Sponsorship A valuable and meaningful partnership As a sponsor you will be contributing to both the gathering and the scholarship program. Not only will you be helping the horse, you ll be creating a valuable association with a unique group of horse enthusiasts. A Legacy Of Legends sponsors receive advertising and other benefits at the annual gathering and throughout the year. It s a great opportunity to reach a targeted group of consumers while also helping assure the horsemanship style of Tom Dorrance and Ray Hunt continues to benefit the horse and bring fulfillment to all those who seek a deeper understanding of the horse.
