You will learn how to provide advice on beauty treatments and services and how to coordinate a work team. This course includes a work placement where you will practice your skills alongside skilled beauty therapists in a salon, spa or other beauty industry workplace. If you re ready to pursue a career as a beauty therapist, this course could help you achieve your goals. In addition, you will receive a range of beauty products including a Professional Beauty Kit. Work with salon products from leading brands like Motives Australia and Beaute Internationale and an expert nail kit from Young Nails. Diploma of Beauty Therapy SIB50110 What you need to know about this course COURSE NUMBER E0144 How is this course delivered? This is an online course with a work placement. This means that you will complete your knowledge and basic skills development through online learning, as well as a work placement. This will allow you to practise and master practical skills and gain invaluable workplace experience and contacts. What is online learning? OpenSpace is Open Colleges online campus. Through OpenSpace you will: > access your learning materials and assessments > undertake assessments or upload assessments > engage and interact with your trainer > participate in student forums and find a study buddy > access your assessment grades and feedback > access student support services > gain access to the Gale Library. What learning materials are included with this course? Your learning materials are accessed through OpenSpace. These include: > learner workbooks > weblinks, readings and resources > videos and other digital resources > news, discussion forums and live chats. In addition, the following materials will be mailed to you in the corresponding Study Period: > textbook: Professional Beauty Therapy: Australia and New Zealand, (Nordmann, Day) 2015, second edition (Study Period 2) > The Nail Compendium Learner Guide (Study Period 3) > Young Nails Professional Nail Kit (Study Period 3) > Motives Make-up Kit, Skintelligence Kit and Beaute International Kit (Study Period 4) > waxing DVD (Study Period 8). You have the option to receive your core learning materials, such as workbooks, by mail for a small surcharge. This is referred to as the print option. If you select the print option, you will still need to access OpenSpace to: > upload assessments > engage with your trainer and assessor > participate in course and unit forums > access grades and other learning resources such as videos or additional readings. What is work placement? Work placement is a structured learning program undertaken in a relevant workplace. It involves doing set tasks and activities over time under the guidance of a workplace supervisor and Open Colleges workplace assessor. The work placement requires you to complete a logbook of workplace tasks undertaken, complete a workplace portfolio and undergo interviews with your workplace assessor. You may also be visited by an Open Colleges workplace assessor in the workplace. A work placement can be a highly stimulating and rewarding part of the course. It will enable you to participate in a real workplace and put into practise the new skills and knowledge that you are learning in the course. The work placement also provides Open Colleges with an opportunity to assess the skills and knowledge you have developed through the course in the workplace. This is called workplace assessment.

Diploma of Beauty Therapy SIB50110 Students will often undertake work placement in their current workplace or find a workplace through their friends, family or colleagues. If you experience difficulties finding a work placement, Open Colleges will provide you with advice, resources and support through our work placement support team. An Open Colleges workplace assessor will determine whether the workplace is appropriate to undertake work placement as part of the course. Please note that you may need to undertake the work placement at more than one workplace in order to meet the requirements of the course, depending on the nature and scope of activities conducted at the workplace. Specific work placement requirements > Duration: Minimum of 120 hours. > Workplace: You will need to undertake your work placement in a workplace that provides beauty services. It will need to have access to the full range of equipment, make-up and skin care products from a comprehensive professional range. Examples of suitable workplaces include: > beauty salons > beauty/retreat spas > beauty therapy services > Open Colleges beauty or work placement centres. The specific requirements of the workplace are outlined in the Workplace Assessment Guide. Your workplace assessor will ascertain whether the workplace is appropriate. > Supervisor: Your supervisor is required to have at least three years of experience within the last five years. They should have experience with the provision of professional make-up and skin care services and should have completed the Diploma in Beauty Therapy (or equivalent). Otherwise, they should be currently employed as a beauty therapist or a salon manager. > Recommendation: Open Colleges recommends that you consider the work placement options in your local area prior to enrolling in this course. > First Aid Certification Whilst it is not a requirement to hold a current First Aid Certificate to undertake work placement in the beauty services industry, workplaces have the right to request this (see Important note about First Aid). Depending on the host organisation, you may also be asked to: > provide a National Police Check > proof of immunisation for certain diseases such as hepatitis B > sign a confidentiality agreement. > Insurance Open Colleges provides insurance cover for the mandatory work placement you undertake as part of your course. This insurance coverage includes Public and Products Liability Insurance as well as Student Personal Accident Insurance. Questions? During the course, you will undertake: > short answer questions > written reports including: - case studies - written reports - essays > workplace assessments including: - a logbook - a portfolio - student and supervisor interviews. Diploma of Beauty Therapy SIB50110 What about Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)? We understand that you may already have relevant skills and areas of expertise that you have obtained in different ways and these are recognised through our Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. Open Colleges has developed an RPL Kit for this course. The Student Handbook, available on the Open Colleges website, provides more information about our RPL process. Alternatively, you can contact a course and careers advisor to discuss your RPL options. What is the duration of the course? The maximum duration for the course is 30 months. To complete the course in this timeframe, we recommend that you study a minimum of 8 hours per week. This is a guide only the time taken to complete your course will depend on your level of skill and knowledge. What are the entry requirements for the course? Education Requirements There are no formal education entry requirements for this qualification. Minimum Age Requirements You will need to be at least 18 years old. English Language Requirements This course requires you to read comprehensive learner workbooks and textbooks, undertake a range of written assessments, undertake independent research activities and engage in online forums and discussions. Furthermore, the delivery mode relies on the extensive use of written communication. As such, entry to the course requires the successful completion of English to Year 12 level. If you have not successfully completed English at Year 12 level, you can demonstrate equivalency with one of the following: > 3 years relevant industry experience in a role that requires the use of written documentation and communication. Open Colleges recognises that not all people are able to read, write and perform calculations to the same standard. To help give you an idea of the language, literacy and numeracy skills required to study this course, you can undertake the online Language, Literacy and Numeracy tool available on the Open Colleges website. This assessment tool can also help you determine your learning level and plan your future studies. This includes: > creating, saving and editing Microsoft Office documents > accessing and searching the internet > downloading and saving documents from websites > uploading documents through websites > participating in online discussions > connecting digital cameras and downloading and storing images > connecting digital video devices and downloading and storing videos > compressing image audio and video files. Important note about First Aid This course includes the unit HLTFA301B Apply first aid. To meet the requirements of this unit you will need to complete a first aid course with an accredited provider at your own cost. This must have been completed within the last 3 years at your time of graduation. St John Ambulance provides a 1 day Apply first aid course with flexible delivery options across Australia, and will issue you a Statement of Attainment for HLTFA301B on successful completion of their course. Many other specialist Registered Training Organisations will deliver similar courses. Upon successful completion of this course you will receive a nationally recognised qualification SIB50110 Diploma in Beauty Therapy awarded by Open Colleges Pty Ltd. (Provider Number 90796). What funding support options exist? Austudy/Abstudy This course is Austudy/Abstudy approved, but you will need to apply directly to Centrelink for information on eligibility. SIB50110 Diploma of beauty Therapy has been superseded by SHB50115 Diploma of Beauty Therapy on the 25th of September 2015. Open Colleges will transition to the new qualification in the near future.
