MD/PhD MISSION OBJECTIVES GOALS

Mission & Objectives Overarching Objective: Train physician-scientists to be an integral component of the healthcare system, now and into the future. Expectations for Graduates: Provide excellent patient care. Lead discovery in disease focused biomedical research. Promote translational research with accelerated progression of discoveries to the bed-side. Be a leader in biomedical research and healthcare delivery.

Goals for Trainees To study and work with a sense of social responsibility in accordance with Judeo-Christian tradition and Ignatian values. To become a physician who delivers excellent healthcare as an integral component of the healthcare team and delivery system to all those in need. To become a medical scientist with the ability to independently conduct innovative research that is goal directed toward ameliorating disease, relieving suffering and improving healthcare. To develop the ability to critically analyze and develop clinical questions promoting research directed toward translation and improved healthcare.

Goals for Trainees To be an effective writer of protocols, proposals, publications, and grants. To be an effective communicator and educator. To work by the principles, ethics, and policies guiding medical science and healthcare, and be a strong advocate in applying them. To develop the skills to be a lifelong student in order to stay current in both the sciences and medicine and, thus, have a lifelong productive career as a physician-scientist.

MD/PhD CURRICULUM

CURRICULUM Year 1 1 st Academic Year: M1 Curriculum MD/PhD Seminar Course Designed to provide a background in medical sciences, particularly around research in Creighton s health sciences. The course will be composed of weekly lunch meetings during which time the student will be introduced to a variety of research topics.

CURRICULUM Year 1 Summer After 1 st Academic Year: Biostatistics Research Design The summer courses will be linked to the Graduate Gateway program, which is a set of basic courses provided for graduate students within the following PhD granting departments: Biomedical Sciences Medical Microbiology and Immunology Pharmacology

CURRICULUM Year 2 2 nd Academic Year: M2 Curriculum MD/PhD Advanced Seminar Course Designed to provide more dialogue with medical scientists on current science topics. Trainees will demonstrate knowledge of various topics through seminar presentations. Summer After 2 nd Academic Year: Pass USLME Step I Scientific and Medical Writing Submit an outline for a research project. Write and submit a training grant application.

CURRICULUM Year 3 3 rd Academic Year (begin PhD curriculum) Gateway Program Year of graduate courses. Begin laboratory experience Seminar Course Provide basics within medical education. Develop the trainee s teaching abilities.

CURRICULUM Year 4-6 Trainees will complete an integrated program of research and study, composed of the remaining PhD and MD requirements. PhD Curriculum Complete research program culminating in a thesis submission. Provide biological and medical science education to high school and undergraduate students. MD/PhD ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Creighton University MD Program MD/PhD applicants must meet all requirements for admission, and be accepted to, the Creighton University MD program. Please review Creighton s Admission Requirements

MD/PhD ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS PhD Requirements Course Requirements Genetics (highly encouraged) Preference for Admission Preference for admission will be given to applicants with the following credentials: Have completed a bachelor s degree in the natural sciences. (ex. Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Physics, etc.) Have a history of research experience(s).

MD/PhD APPLICATION PROCESS Complete the MD/PhD section of the MD Secondary Application. Submit all required credentials. Required Credentials Letters of Recommendation o Two (2) letters of recommendation from research mentors who are able to provide comments about your research experience(s) and research interest(s). The letters are in addition to the letters submitted for admission to the Creighton University MD program. Curriculum Vitae

MD/PhD ADMISSION DECISION Applicants for the MD/PhD program will be reviewed for admission based on the following criteria: The quality of the applicant's academic record. The quality of the applicant's letters of recommendation. The quality of the applicant s secondary personal statement.

MD/PhD ADMISSION DECISION The quality of the applicant s volunteer and extracurricular activity. The potential for the applicant to develop independent thinking and research. Demonstrated evidence of research interest and experience. Evidence of a commitment to a career in academic and scholarly activity. Successful interview.

MD/PhD FINANCIAL OBLIGATION

STUDENT FINANCIAL SUPPORT MD Program Tuition for the MD program will be waived for all MD/PhD trainees. PhD Program Tuition for the PhD program will be waived for all MD/PhD trainees. Trainees will receive a PhD stipend during the PhD program. Trainees will be expected to write a grant proposal that will be submitted to NIH (or a comparable agency) for a training grant. These funds will be used to support the trainees graduate work.

STUDENT FINANCIAL SUPPORT PhD Program Trainees will have access to up to an additional $1500 a year to support their attendance, and presentation of research, at national meetings. Trainees who fail to complete the PhD program Will not be granted tuition remission for the final years of the MD curriculum. Will be responsible for re-paying the first two years of medical school. Will still receive a graduate school tuition waiver.
