PCS Installation Information in this document explains how to perform a new and upgrade installation of the PCS software. Topics include those in the following list: Recommended System Requirements Installation Requirements (page 4) Installation (page 5) Recommended System Requirements The following information identifies recommended system requirements for installing and running the PCS software. The information applies to the following PCS configurations: Master Database with Remote Client Replicas: This configuration includes the master database on a network server or host computer running two-way synchronization for two-way replication with one or more client replica databases. Refer to the next table for more information (Table 1-1, page 2). Single-client Workstation: This configuration includes a PCS database on a single-user workstation without two-way synchronization. Refer to the next table for more information (Table 1-1, page 2). 1

Installation Requirements To ensure a successful installation, review the following information before installing the PCS software: 1 Important - Database Conversion Notice If you currently use PCS software version 6.4.2 or older, contact PCS Technical Services before upgrading the software. Converting the database requires the assistance of PCS Technical Services. 2 Important - PCS Database, Data Folder, and Application By default the installation creates an empty database in a data folder labeled PCS 7 Data in My Documents unless changed during the installation. Use this database to store your company s PCS data. AI recommends that you do not store your company s PCS data in the database that is created in the CPDM folder during the software installation. Based on the target computer (32- or 64-bit), the installation installs the PCS application in the following location unless changed during the installation: 32-bit computer installation path: C:\Program Files\PCSv7\ 64-bit computer installation path: C:\ Program Files (x86)\pcsv7\ 3 Important - Create a Backup of the PCS Database Before upgrading any version of PCS software, create a backup of the PCS database using the procedure in the section entitled Creating a Backup of the PCS Database (page 5). 4 PCS Installation

If you cannot locate the email, call PCS Technical Services for assistance at 1-800-229-3404 (select 1, then press 2). Creating a Backup of the PCS Database To ensure a successful upgrade installation of the PCS software, it is important that you first create a backup of the PCS database before upgrading the PCS software. Information in this section explains how to create a backup of the PCS database: Complete the following steps: 1 Start the PCS software and then click File > Backup Data to open the Backup Data dialog box. Figure 1-1. Backup Data 2 Click the ellipsis button ( ) in the Backup Data dialog box to open the Save As dialog box. Navigate to the folder you want to save the backup file and then click Save. 3 Click Back Up in the Backup Data dialog box. When the message Start System Backup displays, click Yes to begin the backup process. 4 Click OK when the message Full Backup Completed displays. PCS Installation 5
PCS Installation on Windows 7 By default the installation creates an empty database in a data folder labeled PCS 7 Data in My Documents unless changed during the installation. Use this database to store your company s PCS data. AI recommends that you do not store your company s PCS data in the database that is created in the CPDM folder during the software installation. See Creating a Backup of the PCS Database (page 5) for more information. Complete the following steps to install PCS 7 on a Windows 7 computer: 1 Insert the installation DVD in the CD/DVD drive of the computer. If the software installation does not begin automatically: a b Open Windows Explorer and view the contents of the installation DVD. Double-click setup.exe to begin the installation. 2 Follow on-screen prompts to install PCS. 3 When the License Agreement page displays, click I accept the terms in the license agreement. Then click Next to continue the installation (Figure 1-2). Figure 1-2. PCS Installation 6 PCS Installation
4 Complete the following steps to set up Windows 7 to run PCS in administrator mode and minimized: a Click the Windows Start button to open the Windows Start menu. Click All Programs and then Pipeline Compliance System (Figure 1-3). b Right-click Pipeline Compliance System and select Properties in the shortcut menu that opens. Figure 1-3. Windows Start Menu c d When the Pipeline Compliance System Properties window opens, click the Compatibility tab (Figure 1-4, page 8). Click the check box Run this program as an administrator and then click Apply. IMPORTANT: Successful operation of the PCS software requires that the option Run this program as an administrator be enabled A check mark inside the check box indicates the option is enabled. Figure 1-4. Program Properties e Click the Shortcut tab and then click the down arrow in the Run field and select Minimized in the selection list. Click Apply then click OK to close the window (Figure 1-5). Figure 1-5. Run Minimized 8 PCS Installation
5 Complete the following steps to set permissions for the PCS 7 Data folder located in My Documents: a b c Open Windows Explorer and navigate to My Documents on your computer. Right-click the PCS 7 Data folder and select Properties in the shortcut menu to open the PCS 7 Data Properties dialog box (Figure 1-6). Click the Security tab and then select Users ( local system \Users) in the Group or user names group box. Figure 1-6. Properties d e Click Edit to open the dialog box labeled Permissions for PCS 7 Data (Figure 1-7, page 10.) Select Users ( local system \Users) and then click the Full Control check box to place a check mark inside the check box. Click OK to apply settings and close the dialog box. PCS Installation 9
v Figure 1-7. Permissions 6 Open the email from AI that contains the PCS activation key. Highlight the activation key and press <Ctrl><C> to copy it to the clipboard. NOTE: If you cannot locate the email that includes your activation key, call PCS Technical Services for assistance at 1-800-229-3404 (select 1, then press 2). 7 Start PCS and then click Tools > Activation Key to open the Activation Key dialog box (Figure 1-8). Click Copy from clipboard and then click Activate. Figure 1-8. Activation Key The PCS software installation is now complete. The installation also installs PCS user documents in the following location on your computer: 32-bit computer document path: C:\Program Files\PCSv7\manuals 64-bit computer document path: C:\Program Files (x86)\pcsv7\manuals 10 PCS Installation
PCS Installation on Windows Vista or XP By default the installation creates an empty database in a data folder labeled PCS 7 Data in My Documents unless changed during the installation. Use this database to store your company s PCS data. AI recommends that you do not store your company s PCS data in the database that is created in the CPDM folder during the software installation. The installation installs the PCS application in the following location unless changed during the installation: C:\Program Files\PCSv7\. IMPORTANT: If you are upgrading PCS, make a backup of the database before upgrading the software. See Creating a Backup of the PCS Database (page 5) for more information. Complete the following steps. 1 Insert the installation DVD in the CD/DVD drive of the computer. If the software installation does not automatically begin, follow these steps: a b Open Windows Explorer and view the contents of the installation DVD. Double-click the setup.exe file to begin the installation. IMPORTANT: PCS installs several files in a folder labeled CPDM on your computer (C:\CPDM). It is important that you do not move or delete files in the CPDM folder; these files allow you to run the software. 2 Follow on-screen prompts to install PCS. 3 When the License Agreement page displays, click I accept the terms in the license agreement. Then click Next to continue the installation (Figure 1-2). PCS Installation 11
Figure 1-9. PCS Installation 4 When you finish the installation, open the email from AI that contains the PCS activation key. Highlight the activation key and press <Ctrl><C> to copy it to the clipboard. NOTE: If you cannot locate the email that includes your activation key, call PCS Technical Services for assistance at 1-800-229-3404 (select 1, then press 2). 5 When the PCS Activation Key window Figure 1-10 opens, click Copy from clipboard and then click Activate. The installation also installs PCS user documents in the following location: C:\Program Files\PCSv7\manuals. 12 PCS Installation
Moving PCS Data to a Windows 7 Computer The following procedure explains how to move PCS data from an old computer system to a new or re-imaged Windows 7 computer. Complete the following steps: 1 On the old computer system, click Start > Pipeline Compliance System. 2 Click Tools > Activation Key and record the PCS activation key. 3 Click File > Backup Data to create a backup file of your PCS data. Record the location of the backup file. When the backup process completes, copy the backup file to your company s network or a flash drive. 4 On the new or re-imaged Windows 7 computer, follow the instructions in the section entitled PCS Installation on Windows 7 (page 11) to install and activate. When you finish continue with the next step in this section. 5 Copy the backup file created earlier in the PCS 7 Data folder of My Documents. 6 In PCS, click File > Restore Data to open the Restore Data window. Click the ellipsis button (...) and browse to the location of the backup file in the PCS 7 Data folder of My Documents. Select the backup file and click OK, then click Restore. NOTE: If PCS exits unexpectedly during the restore process, change the setting for PCS environment memory size in the General tab of System Settings (Tools > System Settings > General tab. Change the setting to 1.0 GB and then restart PCS and complete the restore process. 7 When the Confirm Restore message displays, click Yes to continue the restore process. 8 Click OK when the following message displays: Restore is complete. PCS will now quit to reset system. 9 Click Start > Pipeline Compliance System. Enter your login information when prompted. 10 If you are working with a PCS replica, complete the following steps: a Contact the PCS administrator to request the replica Station ID be reset. The PCS administrator will need to: (1) turn off server mode on the master database (Tools > Synchronize > Server Mode > Terminate Server Mode; (2) reset the replica Station ID (Tools > Synchronize > Replica Management; and then (3) reactivate Server Mode on the master database (Tools > Synchronize > Server Mode). b Establish a remote connection with the server. Synchronize the replica with the master database. The process is now complete. 14 PCS Installation
