Macintosh Clients and Windows Print Queues OS X Maverick, Lion Mountain, Leopard, Tiger, and Panther Pre-Configuration Requirements Ensure Macintosh machines have a valid Host A and PTR records in your campus DNS server and it s the same DNS server used by the GoPrint server. When using a LPR Printing Port 515 MUST be open on any firewall between the Macintosh clients and the GoPrint server. Also, check the local Windows Firewall on the Windows Server to make sure it s not blocking port 515. Windows LPD Service Feature must be installed and running on the serve SMB or Windows printing option is used, Windows File and Print Sharing must be enabled on any firewall. Port 139 or 445. Macintosh client machine names must be shorter than 15 characters in order to successfully fit into the allowable button name space displayed at a print release station. Local Administrator account must have Full control access to each print queue. 2015 ITC Systems., All rights reserved. Mac Printing 1

If using a Print Release Station determine the print job identification method! How Print Jobs display at a Print Release Station: When using the GoPrint solution with Macintosh clients it is important to understand how the Macintosh networking set-up effects how print jobs can be identified at a GoPrint Print Release Station. Print jobs are identified with as a clickable button displaying either: username or machinename Note: unless the Web Client is used, in which jobs will appear as the name of the logged in user of the Web Client). Which identification method you use depends on your Macintosh login configuration. The majority of Macintosh lab environments are configured to with single logon account or a local generic user account. This account is typically set to auto-login and is usually the same name and password for each machine. Some GoPrint clients do opt to create an individual username and password for each machine. Either login type works, with the second option providing a bit more flexibly. Drawback: When a single generic logon is used, all print jobs appear at a GoPrint Print Release Station as the same user account, the local generic user account. With this scenario, machine name identification must be used to successfully identify a user s print job. Using this scenario, users must recall the name of the machine they are printing from. To help users identify their print jobs, it is a common practice to place a label on the monitor displaying the machine name and educating users on the proper printing process. 2015 ITC Systems., All rights reserved. Important!!! If proper DNS hostname resolution is not resolvable, then the incorrect hostname m a y appear, and if NO DNS Host A or DNS Reverse look Record exists, the IP address of the machine is displayed. See troubleshoot section for more detail. LPR Printing Option For ease of compatibility between the two operating systems, the preferred method GoPrint recommends is to use the standard LPD/LPR printer port. To connect to a Windows print queue using LPR you must first install the LPD print monitor on the Windows Print Server. Advantage: LPR printing bypasses the Windows SMB sharing credentials. SMB is more difficult to configure and support because it requires a user account to authenticate that must have Rights to the Print Share. IMPORTANT: LPD Service must be installed and running on the Windows print server prior to creating the Macintosh LPR print queue. Install the Windows 2008/2012 LPD Service The LPD daemon is installed as a Feature under the Print and Document Services Role. 1. Open Server Manager and select Add Features. 2. Navigate down to Print and Document Service Role and check LPD Service. If you don t see PDS, then you must go back and install the Role! 2015 ITC Systems., All rights reserved. Mac Printing 3

Important: A server reboot is required! The LPD Service is now displayed as Started under Microsoft Services. 2015 ITC Systems., All rights reserved. Mac Printing 4

Create a Mac Print queue Step One - Select System Preferences from the Apple menu Step Two - Select the Print & Fax icon 2015 ITC Systems., All rights reserved. Mac Printing 5

Step Three - Click the Plus (+) sign to add a printer Step Four Click IP to add a LPR queue 2015 ITC Systems., All rights reserved. Mac Printing 6

Step Five Configure the Printer Properties Address: Enter GoPrint print server IP Address Protocol: Line Printer Daemon - LPD Queue: Enter Windows printer share name or physical name Warning: known issues exist when using the printer TCP printer port Name: printer name that appears locally to the Mac user. It doesn t have to match the Queue name. Location: Optional Print Using: Select Generic PS Driver Click Add 2015 ITC Systems., All rights reserved. Mac Printing 7

Printer successfully installed Warning: When the Setting up processing bar continues to display, it indicates an issue communicating to the printer server or printer port. Cancel setup and try again. 2015 ITC Systems., All rights reserved. Mac Printing 8

Print Using: Recommend using the generic driver. Print job will be sent to the Print driver installed on the GoPrint print server and print job will be rendered using the servers print driver. Note: If a print driver is selected from the list of available drivers on the Macintosh client, it must match the same driver version installed on the GoPrint server or print rendering issues will occur. Secondly, the driver MUST be network compatible, as many Epson drivers are not! Troubleshooting LPR Most common issue, jobs display as Paused! 1. Local Administrator doesn t have Full Control 2. Printer TCP port used for the Queue name instead of the Physical or Share name. 2015 ITC Systems., All rights reserved. Mac Printing 9

A look at Windows Event Viewer displays the following message: The Line Printer Daemon (LPD) service refused a print job from 192.168.1.128 for printer \\192.168.1.129\coffee because the specified printer does not exist on this computer. Retry printing from the client using the correct printer name. 2015 ITC Systems., All rights reserved. Mac Printing 10

Resolution 1 - When creating a Windows print queue, the local Administrator is automatically granted Full Control. If not, jobs from Mac LPR queues will not able to communicate. 2015 ITC Systems., All rights reserved. Mac Printing 11

Resolution 2 - Secondly, The Windows print queue Physical name or Share name MUST be used. Commonly. Users will use the queue TCP Port address. Once the issue is resolved, opening the print queue and selecting Resume resends all Paused print jobs. 2015 ITC Systems., All rights reserved. Mac Printing 12

When creating a print queue if the Setting up message bar hangs it indicates issues communicating to the print server or print queue. Resolution: Ensure server IP and Queue name are correct. Cancel setup. Printing printer is in use message: 2015 ITC Systems., All rights reserved. Mac Printing 13

Possible causes: LPD Service is either not installed or the service is not running. Port 515 blocked on network between the Mac client and the Windows Print queue. Solution 1 install the LPD service Windows Feature or check to see it s running 2015 ITC Systems., All rights reserved. Mac Printing 14

Solution 2 - Open the Mac Network Utility and run a Port Scan for port 515 The following screenshot displays a successful scan over port 515 Note: the IP Address is the IP address of the GoPrint Print server 2015 ITC Systems., All rights reserved. Mac Printing 15

print servers and its shared printers. Perquisites: Windows Print and File Sharing Must be enabled on Firewalls port TCP 139 or TCP 445 if NetBIOS over TCP is disabled The local user name logged into the Mac must also exist as a local user on the GoPrint server with the same password. Windows UDP 138 must be open to allow the smb browser list to view objects in Network Neighborhood. Step one Click the Plus Sign to add a printer 2015 ITC Systems., All rights reserved. Mac Printing 17

Step two Select the Windows icon In the left pane Select the name of the Windows domain or workgroup you wish to browse for print servers. Step Three Enter a username and password from the Windows server which has access to the Print share Check Remember this password in my keychain Middle pane Click the name of the desired print server 2015 ITC Systems., All rights reserved. Mac Printing 18

Step four Select the shared printer from the printer listing found under the right pane Location (optional) helps to identify the physical location of the device Print Using Select the Generic PostScript Printer drive Troubleshooting Windows Printing Run the Mac Network utility to ensure Windows Print and File Sharing ports 135, 139, or 445 are open 2015 ITC Systems., All rights reserved. Mac Printing 19

ADVANCED PRINTING OPTION The Advanced Printing offers the same options as the previous configuration attempts using LPR and Windows printing but provides an additional layer of management control. Compare to previous versions, Mac OS X Leopard and above has hidden the Advanced printing options. To enable, click on your printer toolbar while pressing the Option key plus the letter C key Select Customize Toolbar Drag your favorite items into the toolbar Look for the Advanced icon and press down and drag it to your printing toolbar. 2015 ITC Systems, All rights reserved. Mac Printing 10

Manually adding a smb share print queue Step one Select the Advanced icon to view the list of available options Select Windows 2015 ITC Systems, All rights reserved. Mac Printing 11

Step two In the url field enter the name of the Windows print server followed by a colon and port 139 and the a forward slash and the name of the print share. Note: it appears new with leopard and above you must also include the port number in the smb url, as compared to previous releases. Click add At this point, you should be prompt for a Windows username and password with permissions to the print share. Option two: To bypass the username and password prompt you can manually enter the username and password directly into the smb url. The disadvantage is the password can be viewed by logged in users Example: smb://username:password@servername:139/printshare 2015 ITC Systems, All rights reserved. Mac Printing 12

Troubleshooting If you can't connect to a Windows GoPrint print server and its print queues from your Macintosh client, here are some things to try: Make sure you have typed the GoPrint server name and print queue shared name correctly. If guest access isn't allowed, make sure you have typed the user name and password exactly as they are entered on the Windows computer. A shared user account must exist locally on the Mac s and GoPrint server. The password for the user account you are using may need to be reentered on the Windows computer, or the computer may need to be restarted. Try to ping the GoPrint server by DNS and IP address name Try to ping the printer(s) by IP address or connect through a browser If you can ping the GoPrint server and printers, then the TCP/IP connection between the computers is working. 2015 ITC Systems, All rights reserved.
