Johnson County Community College Transfer Program to the University of Kansas School of Journalism, B.S.J. News and Information Track, Strategic Communication Track 2015-2016 Catalog Phone: (785) 864-4080 E-Mail: jadvising@ku.edu Home Page: www.journalism.ku.edu The Associate of Arts degree (A.A.) at JCCC is a general transfer degree and partners well with the first two years of most bachelor degree programs. Students pursuing the A.A. may select courses that satisfy both the A.A. degree requirements and lower division requirements for a bachelor s degree at four-year institutions. The elective hours within the A.A. allows students to complete additional general education and lower division courses required for specific majors. The A.A. degree requires completion of 64 credit hours, the maximum number of hours from a community college that will be applied toward a bachelor s degree at most four-year schools. Meeting with a JCCC counselor is strongly recommended for selection of appropriate courses The requirements below are effective for fall semester 2013 and thereafter: Transfer students who have completed the following requirements are eligible to be candidates for admission to the School of Journalism: Regular Admission: Completion of at least 24 credit hours with a 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA; completion of or enrollment in JOUR 101 or the equivalent at JCCC, JOUR 120. Admission is competitive. The number of students admitted each semester depends on the number graduating the preceding semester and the school s overall capacity. Candidate selection is based on GPA. Ninety percent of available spaces are filled by the candidates with the highest GPA. The remaining ten percent are selected from among those who petition before the deadline, provided that the student has a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 or higher. The BSJ degree requires 120 hours of college credit; a minimum of 40 hours of journalism courses within the 120 hour total. Only 12 transfer hours in journalism may be counted toward the degree. Sixty four credits may be transferred from a community college. Students should be aware that 45 junior/senior credit hours are required for completion of the bachelors degree. Students must complete at least 30 hours at KU. Pass/Fail Policy: Journalism courses will NOT be accepted with a P. Students should use caution in exercising this option as this grading system is not acceptable to some schools, scholarship committees and honorary societies. Students cannot take courses for their minor using the P/F policy. D Grades: Not accepted. It is important to note that only 12 hours of JCCC s Journalism courses can be transferred to KU due to KU s School of Journalism accrediting body. Only 12 hours of transfer Journalism courses can be applied toward the minimum 40 hours of Journalism needed for graduation. Updated 5/15
