BIG DATA IN BUSINESS Implement and use Big Data to your organization s advantage Location: IE Business School Campus in Madrid, Spain Duration: June 22-24, 2015, Monday-Wednesday 3 days, 9am to 6pm Investment: 3.900 2 Overview Big Data the great volume, velocity and variety of available data that can be obtained today is the current buzzword in business, promising the discovery of new value and opportunities and the optimization of processes. However, the proper implementation of Big Data efforts remains a huge challenge: the high degree of management and decision-making skills needed to sort through complex data and the scarcity of Big Data and business analytics professionals are only some of the hurdles businesses face on their way to using Big Data to their utmost advantage. Big Data in Business seeks to help participants dig through and extract the essentials of Big Data and mentor them in its effective and optimal use as a tool to facilitate growth in their respective organizations. While the program contains interactive lectures, group exercises are also to be held on each day of the course to ensure that participants already start their Big Data implementation plans and in addition present and test these plans before a panel of experts. Program objectives The course aims to: 1) Aid course attendees understand what Big Data is and how it can benefit their organizations, jumping into many examples derived from the most active markets today 2) Provide enough business, regulatory and technological background as to a. Facilitate the launching of Big Data initiatives within their current organizations or launching new Big Data or analytics-based ventures. b. Encourage them to deepen in specific aspects of the business, technology or its applications to their industry c. Expand their managerial skill toolbox with the development of analytical capabilities This is not a technical course but a business course on Big Data and analytics. However, the course will cover some technology issues, as technology is a key driver in the Big Data and analytics business and as an understanding of the basic concepts and trends is needed. In the same vein, this approach is conceived and taught so that any interested person, irrespective of his/her former academic training, could easily follow the sessions and actively participate.

Big Data In Business PROGRAM TARGETS The program is designed for: Top level executives not familiar with Big Data or analytics: The program will help them understand the strategic importance of developing analytical and Big Data capabilities. Mid-level managers across all business lines who want to expand their views, develop managerial analytical capabilities, and learn the operational implications of launching Big Data and analytical initiatives. Technology suppliers who want to understand the trends in the business and spot new opportunities. Other parties interested in the optimal application of Big Data to boost organizational effectiveness. 3 Content The program adopts an industry wide perspective, i.e. tries to provide an overview of Big Data and analytics in many industries across multiple business lines. It will not only provide a description of Big Data initiatives in a certain industry, but also how can it be implemented from Marketing to Human Resources. The program combines both theoretical instruction with case studies and practical group exercises aimed to facilitate networking and provide attendees with the opportunity to work on their own Big Data initiatives during the course.

Example of successful Big Data initiatives Sources of competitive advantage from application of Big Data and analytics Sessions 3 & 4: Overview of a Big Data platform Open source stack (Apache Hadoop, Apache HBase, mongo DB, Hive etc ) Commercial Big Data and analytics tools Session 5: Group Exercise Groups will discuss among themselves the lessons taught during the day and apply the learning by working on a Big Data idea 4 Day 2: Big Data Projects in practice. Do s and Don ts Session 6: Group Exercise Presentation of ideas developed during the previous day group exercise to a panel of experts. The panel will comment on the ideas presented and on their own perspective regarding Big Data Session 7: Conceptual model for analytical thinking Overview of the six steps to structure analytics - Problem recognition - Review of previous findings - Modeling - Data collection - Data analysis - Results presentations and action Session 8: Introduction to Data Science and designing big data experiments Avoiding survivor bias Over-fitting problems Sampling requirements Session 9: Managing data privacy and governance Session 10: Group Exercise Groups will reunite to develop the implementation roadmap of their Big Data idea Day 3: The Future of Big Data Session 11: Group Exercise Presentation of implementation strategies developed during the previous day group exercise to a new panel of experts. Big Data In Business FACULTY Ignacio Larrú Martínez Ignacio is an Adjunct Professor of Entrepreneurship and Big Data at IE Business School. He is an Analytics Consultant and is also currently the Vice President of Credit Agricole CIB. He is moreover the Founder of Ll Ventures, and previously worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers as IT Consultant. He studied Telecommunications Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Madrid and holds an MBA degree from IESE Business School. Jorge Ferreira Jorge Ferreira is a consultant in The Boston Consulting Group were he designs and implements strategic alternatives for businesses regarding Big Data and other related technologies to improve their decision making procedures. Jorge has more than 14 years of experience in the analytics sector as an IT consultant. He graduated as an Industrial Engineer and holds an MBA from Chicago Booth Business School. He also manages the Chicago Booth: Big Data Analytics networking group within the Chicago Booth community. Alvaro Mendez Professor Méndez is an expert in Data Mining and Predictive Analytics. He currently combines his responsibilities as BA Engagement Manager at IBM Spain, where he manages Business Analytics services sales, with a role as Econometrics Lecturer at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and Statistics Coach at Georgia Tech Institute. He holds a Certificate in Advanced Studies in Econometrics, with researches in Neural Networks applied to Financial Markets and a Microsoft Certified Solution Developer Certificate. Aurelie Pols Aurélie pioneered Digital analytics in Europe. This allowed her to co-found OX2 in Belgium, and Mind Your Group in Spain. She now works as an independent consultant, defining data flows and supporting companies in their risk exercises to determine potential data liabilities. She speaks at events such as emetrics, O Reilly s Strata, Webit and the International Association of Privacy Professionals. Aurélie teaches Digital Analytics and Ethics & Privacy at IE Business School. 5 Alberto Gonzalez Alberto Gonzalez Paje works as a Data Scientist in Bestiario, one of Spain s leading Big Data and analytics consulting companies. He has worked for the past ten years as a data analyst for companies like Monsanto and Coca-Cola analyzing descriptive analytics and implementing Business Intelligence projects. Alberto holds a Business Administration degree and a Master in Tax and Law. Carlos del Cacho Carlos del Cacho works as data scientist in JobandTalent, one of Spain s leading startup companies trying to develop predictive algorithms to match job seekers and job offers. Carlos has more than 10 years of experience in developing machine learning and data science based projects for Spain s largest companies like Indra. He holds a Computer Science degree and has a master in Artificial Intelligence Guest speakers Representatives from top companies that excel in their use of Big Data will be invited for the presentations, panel discussions and networking.
