Twenty-Eighth Annual FACS Alumni Luncheon Alumni and Student Recognition Luncheon The twenty-eighth annual FACS Alumni Luncheon was held on April 10, 2015 on the UCA Campus in Brewer- Hegeman Conference Center. This year the luncheon brought together over 100 alumni, students, and friends. Attendees enjoyed comments from University President, Tom Courtway. TWENTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL FACS ALUMNI LUNCHEON Distinguished Service Award Dr. Steven Runge, is the Executive Vice President and Provost at UCA. During his time, Dr. Runge has provided the Family and Consumer Sciences Department, students, faculty, staff, and alumni tremendous support. Dr. Runge came to UCA in 1991 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology where he quickly advanced into Administrative roles for the University. He is a 1986 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay where he majored in Biology, Chemistry, and Human Adaptability. He earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Ohio State University and continues to play an active role in numerous organizations. Distinguished Alumnae Bobbie Bell Garner Floyd is a 1965 graduate of UCA with a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences. Bobbie began her distinguished career as a Home Service advisor in Southeast Arkansas. In 1968 she joined the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service as a Home Economist for Cross County. Bobbie has ben a leader in numerous educational programs throughout her career that benefitted Arkansas families. In 2007, Bobbie established a scholarship fund at UCA in order to provide financial assistance to students graduating from high schools in the Arkansas Delta region. Page 2 Distinguished Alumnae Dr. Melissa Shock earned her Bachelor s degree in Home Economics Education and her Master of Science from UCA and her PhD from Oklahoma State University. Dr. Shock also earned her credentials as a Registered Dietician Nutritionist with the American Dietetic Association. Dr. Shock s professional career began as a Home Economist for the Electric Power & Light Company in Dallas. Upon her return to Arkansas, she began her teaching career in public schools, working in dialysis clinics and is currently an Associate Professor in the Family and Consumer Sciences Department at UCA. She has served as a member of the faculty senate, faculty advisor for Phi Upsilon Omicron Honor Society, as well as her service to the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences and the Central Arkansas Dietetic Associations.
Page 3 VOLUME 6, ISSUE 3 Young Achiever Award Leslee Tell is a 2004 graduate of UCA with a BSE degree and a Master of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences. Leslee is a Conway High School teacher where she teaches Family and Consumer Sciences, Foods and Nutrition and serves as the Faculty Sponsor for the FCCLA student organization. In addition to teaching, Leslee is a featured writer for the Family Flavours magazine which is published in both English and Arabic and can be seen in six Middle Eastern Countries. She is a National Board Certified Teacher and works closely with the UCA FACS Department and the College of Education supervising student interns. Leslee was named the UCA College of Education Mentor Teacher of the Year in 2014. Young Achiever Award Payne Harding is a native of Little Rock and a 2009 graduate of UCA with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition/Dietetics. Immediately following the completion of his degree, Payne was accepted into the prestigious Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in Hyde Park, New York. During the program, he completed multiple internship experiences at several high profile establishments in New York and Washington D.C. Payne returned to Little Rock and opened the updated 1620 Savoy Restaurant where he worked as a chef with his childhood mentor, Chef Morton. In January 2014, he opened Cache Restaurant in the Little Rock River Market District. In the short time Cache has been open, it has been selected as Best New Restaurant, Best Wine List, Best Business Lunch/Dinner. Even with his new business, Payne still finds time to give back to his community by participating with Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families
TWENTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL FACS ALUMNI LUNCHEON Page 4 New Endowed Scholarship Fund A new endowed Family and Consumer Sciences scholarship fund was announced this year. The Suellen Ward Family and Consumer Sciences Endowed Scholarship was presented to honor Mrs. Suellen Ward for her distinguished service, dedication, and support to the Family and Consumer Science profession. Scholarship History This year we had a remarkable number of scholarships to award to many deserving students. The first Family and Consumer Sciences scholarship started with a $400 donation and from that, 326 scholarships have been awarded since. This academic year, forty one graduate and undergraduate students received a scholarship at the luncheon. We appreciate the generosity and donations that allow the scholarships awards to continue to this day. There are currently fourteen scholarship funds available to Family and Consumer Sciences students.
