Bulletin of IYLA September December 2011 A new period of UGLA has started together with youths from 14 different countries, including Turkey. In addition to our shareholders and presenting partners, Corino CEO, Gerard GROENER; Director of Save the Children, Holke WIEREMAVE, and Deputy Representative of UNICEF Turkey, Regina DE DOMINICS, attended the opening ceremony. Furthermore, one of UGLA s main supporters, Secretary General of UCLG-MEWA and Chairman of the Board of WALD Mehmet DUMAN, UCLG s President, Mayor of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Kadir TOPBAŞ, and Istanbul Governor Hüseyin Avni MUTLU also participated in the opening ceremony. After opening, our students and partners had a chance to mingle and converse. 1
FIRST INTERNATIONAL TRAINING... The first UGLA international training program regarding Participation, Youth and Children Rights, implemented between 19-25 September 2011 in Istanbul, with our Habitat instructors and Ravi Karkara (UNICEF), Goossen Hoenders, Katarina Muzsikova (Save the Children Netherlands). Thirty young volunteers, aged 15 30, from Turkey, Azerbaijan, Bosnia- Herzegovina, Algeria, Armenia, Morocco, Georgia, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Kosovo, Macedonia, Egypt, Serbia, Syria, and Jordan participated. International Documents, United Nations Documents, Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), Women, Youth and Children Rights Declarations, theoretic and practical studies for Children and Youth Participation and youth and children studies in Turkey were presented in the training. 2
UGLA I CAN MANAGE MY MONEY TRAININGS Twenty - two youth participated in UGLA s I Can Manage My Money Training sessions on the 7 th of September, 20 th of October and 25 th of November, 2011, led by Nur Yüce and Mustafa Özer. Additionally, expert bank employers also attended the training sessions and had a chance to converse with participants. On September 29-30 and October 1-2, 2011, our master trainer Halil Ünsal led the Training of Trainers in Istanbul Region. Friends of participants who attended this training will extend what they learned to other regions and people. NEGOTIATION AND MEDIATION TRAININGS 3
Dr. Nimet Beriker, professor of Sabancı University s Conflict Analysis ve Solution Master s Programme, and her students, formed the content of the Negotiation and Mediation Training. The training has reached 65 youth during September and November. Local trainings were held in Istanbul, Antalya, and Adana by Gözde Sodacı, Nezaket Bektaş, Dilara Özel, Murat Taş, Elif Kalan and Tunç Karaçay on October 1-2, October 15, October 29 and November 26-27 2011. TECHNOLOGY AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP TRAINING of TRAINERS at UGLA... start in UGLA with our 11 new trainers. Technology and Entrepreneurship training of trainers was held on September 10-14, 2011, and was hosted by UGLA. Eleven youth from different NGOs, youth parliaments and university clubs participated in the training. Several of the issues presented in training included guidance skills, classroom management, critical thinking, and communication, among others. Local trainings will DISCRIMINATION TRAINING AT YOUTH RE- AUTONOMY FOUNDATION OF TURKEY It is been decided to extend the training sessions to the Youth Re-Autonomy 4
Foundation of Turkey (TÇYOV). On October 16, 2011, 12 youth were trained regarding Discrimination and Hate Speech in New Media. UGLA was at the NATIONAL COORDINATION MEETING in ANTALYA We, UGLA trainees and trainers met at the Coordination Meeting on September 27-30, 2011, in Antalya. 120 participants from 75 cities attended 5 different UGLA Trainings. Sessions. The topics of the sessions included Technology and Entrepreneurship, Negotiation and Mediation, Documentary Cinema and Social Responsibility; Youth and Children Rights and Participation, and Volunteer in the World. Our sessions were appreciated very much and there has been a high level of interest towards our training, and we are therefore extending our programs to 5
NOW, UGLA is in EŞKİŞEHİR... One of our trainers, Tora Benzeyen, transferred all studies regarding Child and Youth Rights/Participation through the instruments of Youth Branches of Red Crescent in Turkey to young locals in Eskişehir. We really loved the Youth Branches in Eskişehir, and we would like to consider extending our training sessions in Eskişehir in the near future. YOUNGART TRAINING in BİNGÖL SOLHAN Ferhat Bayar, who is IYLA trainer on YOUNGArt, organized a local training in 10-12 December 2012, Solhan, Bitlis. He has given the training that includes photography, short-movies, cinema and documentary movie making. 50 students from secondary school have attended this trainings. 6
DISCRIMINATION AND HATE SPEECH ON NEW MEDIA TRAINING AT GAZİANTEP AND ŞANLIURFA YOUTH AND CULTURE HOUSE Dila Küpeli, who is IYLA trainer on Discrimination and Hate Speech on New Media, has given this training on 11 December 2012 and 18 December 2012 with the participation of 44 young people in Gaziantep and Şanlıurfa. Youth and Culture Houses in these cities hosted these trainings Negotiation and Mediation Training at İzmir Canan Erkmen who is IYLA trainer on Negotiation and Mediation, has given this training on 18 December 2012 and 25 December 2012 with the participation of 41 young people in İzmir. Karabağlar These trainings were organized with the 7
partnership with Karabağlar Youth Council and Educational Volunteers Foundation of Turkey. PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT WITH DIRECTORATE OF ŞİŞLİ GOVERNORATE.. A partnership protocol has been signed between Directorate of Şişli Governorate and Habitat on 8 th December 2012. The protocol aims that all IYLA trainings will be given to students at high schools in Şişli District. We are in Şişli with our IYLA trainers Schools have been selected due to the relevancy of the topics and the students area of interests. BASIC COMPUTER and TECHNOLOGY for WOMEN TRAININGS ARE IN UGLA... Women have supported in the scope of TeknoSa s Technology for Women Social Responsibility in training sessions all over the Turkey. The content of the sessions included free computer courses and Internet skill building, in order to help youth become more attune with technology. The sessions were greatly appreciated.
