What: A credential that is gained by: Being eligible, on the basis of qualifications and experience, to sit for an examination Passing the examination Committing to the CHIA Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct Supported by ACHI, HISA and HIMAA

What (continued): Eligibility: Undergraduate degree + plus five (5) years of associated experience* OR Post-graduate degree + plus three (3) years of associated experience* + Degree can be any degree and does not have to be in health informatics * Associated experience includes the following functional areas: health informatics, administration/management, clinical information systems, e-health, information systems, health information management.

What (continued): Eligibility: Be an ethical user of health information, demonstrate professional integrity and have their academic documentation verified and accepted; and Be approved to sit for the certification examination by the CHIA Examination Committee

What (continued): Examination: Covering 6 competency areas and 52 competencies 104 multiple choice questions Taking 2.5 hours Managed by an Examination Committee comprising senior Australasian health informaticians

Competency areas: Information and Communication Technology (5 competencies); Health and Biomedical Sciences (10 competencies); Information Science (8 competencies); Management Science (5 competencies); Core Principles and Methods (20 competencies); Human and Social Contexts (4 competencies).

Competencies have also been developed for a series of specialisations, and the Certified Health Informatician Australasia will be progressively extended to allow candidates to apply for certification in these specialisations. These specialisations are: Biomedical Imaging and Signal Processing; Translational Bioinformatics; Public Health Informatics; Clinical Informatics; Health Information Management; Clinical research Informatics; Aged Care Informatics; Nursing Informatics.

Why: Health informatics is now fundamental to the delivery of healthcare But it is complex: Complex and contextually sensitive data Vast range of delivery models, settings Etc Needs highly skilled, knowledgeable and experienced people CHIA will be one of the indicators that people have the required competencies

Why (continued): Employers and funders want to know that their agents have the requisite skills Health informaticians want to be able to distinguish themselves People coming into health from other informatics roles/backgrounds want to know how to transition effectively where to focus etc.

Benefits to individuals: The right to use the CHIA post-nominals; Increased knowledge of and in the competencies essential to health informatics. The Certified Health Informatician has demonstrated knowledge of and/or the ability to apply all of the requisite competencies; Differentiation from other individuals engaged in health informatics. The Certified Health Informatician Australasia has been independently assessed as achieving competence; Greater credibility and recognition as a Certified Health Informatician Australasia you will be recognised by your post-nominals and on the CHIA website. Since the CHIA competencies are consistent with internationally recognised competencies in health informatics, achievement of CHIA certification is of global relevance; Access to a community of peers; The personal satisfaction of independent validation of competence.

Benefits to organisations: Increased quality and consistency of the health informatics education and training available to employees, based on an industry-wide set of competencies that has been endorsed by the major health informatics associations in Australasia; The ability to differentiate between individuals and between your organisation s health informatics workforce and others, based on independent assessment; Guidance as to the competencies required by health informaticians in contemporary healthcare and the means of assessing these; Demonstration of professionalism in health informatics via support for the CHIA program, encouragement for employees competencies to be independently assessed, etc; Improved effectiveness via usage of a workforce that has been assessed as having the competencies required by health informaticians in contemporary healthcare.

How (continued): The CHIA credential must be renewed every three years. There are two ways to re-certify: Submit a recertification journal that documents a minimum level of ongoing professional development; Take the exam again.
