Comune di Agropoli Scuola di Architettura Civile Politecnico di Milano Fondazione Internazionale per gli Studi Superiori di Architettura FORMA URBIS SUMMER SCHOOL 16 26 september 2013 Palazzo Civico delle Arti, Agropoli, Italy The Workshop, promoted by the Municipality of Agropoli, the Scuola di Architettura Civile of the Politecnico di Milano and the Fondazione Internazionale per gli Studi Superiori di Architettura, is intended as intensive architectural and urban design laboratory supported by lessons and conferences; it articulates through meetings-debates with the guests, reviews of the elaborated projects and a final evaluation by an international committee of professors and delegates of the Municipal Administration. The Summer School involves 100 hours of work for each student: 33 hours approx. to be accomplished independently before the beginning of the Workshop starting from the documentary material provided as a dossier on enrollment and 67 hours approx. of seminar activity to be carried out during the Workshop. Program The Workshop, addressed to students and young Architecture and Engineering Graduates, articulates in two phases: a. sending of the dossier with the description of the identified areas, of the emerging issues and of the project themes, on enrolment; b. taking place of the design workshop for the durations of 11 days organized through the different activities defined in the calendar of activities handed to participants on enrollment: - deepening of the assigned design questions through introductive lessons and one seminar meeting; - design elaboration related to the assigned project area, carried out individually or in group with the continuous presence of the tutors, together with reviews and discussions with the guest professors; - debate-conferences held by exponents of the international culture focused on the project and on the main theoretic and practical questions connected to it.
Theme The Workshop is intended as the place for discussion where to delineate hypotheses of intervention related to the settlement structure of the contemporary city, applied to the city of Agropoli and its territory; the themes, defined together with the Municipal Administration, will allow to deal with the modalities through which the project defines itself according to the construction of places: general goal is to understand and continue their construction, with the consciousness that if the project is always the answer to a particular problem, through its definition it always shows its generality too, the possibility of outlining an alternative to the modalities of construction of the current city. The project areas and the urban artifacts placed at the edge of the historic city and between this latter and the first urban periphery, correspond to a well individuated problem, to places where various areas different from each other, both for the geometrical reference lines of their layout and for the dwelling models that compose them, merge; the project is called to retrieve a recognizable structure to such nodal and particularly complex points of the city, re-establishing those particular conditions of measure and order, as well as of variety and richness in the use of the urban land, that are a recognizable heritage of the historical city. The morphological-settling reorganization is directly connected to the ongoing rapid modifications of the tertiary and touristy structure, to the architectural requalification of significative buildings of the historic centre, as well as to the expected infrastructural modifications, that impose a radical rethinking of the building whole, implying a more general structural idea that relates to the whole Campania region. Credits and final evaluation Subject to the approval of the seats of origin, the attendance of the Workshop, with positive results in the opinion of the Examining Board, allows the assignment of 4 ECTS (European Transfer Credit System) to the participants coming from the U.E., and of 4 CFU (Crediti Formativi Universitari) to the participants coming from the Italian Universities. The project work will conclude with the final evaluation by an International Committee.
