Frequently Asked Questions 1. Where are the classes and how do I register? Classes will be offered in a variety of locations. For the location and times most convenient for you please follow the registration instructions below. Additional classes may be arranged for groups of 8 or more at your clinical site at the KP discounted rate. After registering online, you will receive an email confirmation of class enrollment with class location, date, and time. Please see question 3 before registering. 2. I need to get into a class right away. How close to the class date can I register? You can register for any class that is up on the website and has an open seat until midnight the night before the class. There are no late enrollment fees. Be aware classes may fill up so proactive planning is strongly encouraged. Consider scheduling your class when you receive the initial notice from the Licensing, Certification, and Registration (LCR). 3. Does Cascade Healthcare have a cancellation or no-show policy? If you are scheduled for a class and can t attend, contact Cascade as soon as possible to cancel the class so they can fill your seat. Cancellations received less than 48 hours prior to class or failure to come to a scheduled class may result in KP being charged for the class. Unless the cancellation is due to operational reasons, this may be considered a misuse of KP funds. This may result in a discovery and corrective action. Even if you miss a class for operational reasons you are still required to call and cancel. 4. Does Cascade Healthcare have a late-arrival policy? Students who arrive to the class late may be asked to reschedule at the Course Director s discretion dependent upon how much content has been missed. Similarly, if someone leaves the classroom outside of a scheduled break and misses key content, they may be asked to re-schedule. Rescheduling could result in KP being charged twice for a class. This may result in a discovery and corrective action. 5. Do I need to bring an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS book to the class? Yes. The AHA requires each student bring the current manual with them to any renewal or full course. Due to AHA guidelines, life support instructors may ask you to reschedule if you arrive to class without the required text. To obtain a book, you have 2 options: *Purchase a Book at the Cascade training center or pre-order a book when you register for class. If you purchase a book through Cascade this will be your own personal book and will require the use of your personal credit or debit card. The cost will NOT be reimbursed. *Borrow a Book from the KPNW Regional Libraries free of charge. **You must have a current profile in the KPLibraries lending database. If you already have a library profile, contact or drop by your most convenient local KP Library at either KSMC or KWMC and place your request. You can pick up the texts or they can be inner-office mailed to your work location if you do not work at the KSMC or KWMC campuses. Please allow for interoffice mail delivery time. The KPNW Regional Libraries has ACLS, BLS, PALS, PEARS and Heartsaver CPR AED for the nonclinical staff CPR course manuals available. *If ENPC is required by your job description and you register through Cascade with the coupon code, an ENPC manual will be shipped to you within 2 business days of registration. All ENPC participants must have their own manual (current edition) for use during the course. Manuals can t be shared during the course. Librarying of books is not allowed because the participants should be able to use the manual as a 2

reference before, during, and after the course (this means the Clinical Library will not be able to source the books for you). This requirement comes from the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA). To register with the library, type Library Registration Form into the search box on the internal home page. You can also find a link to the form on the KPNW Regional Library home page under Quick Links or use Library Registration Form. **If you have never checked out a book from the NW Regional Libraries you need to complete a Library Registration Form. Send it to the NW Regional Libraries at nw.med.library@kp.org OR fax it to 503-571- 4291 / tie-line 31-4291. Additional Questions regarding books: Call 503-571-4293 or 31-4293. 6. Will I automatically get my BLS certification when I am certifying for ACLS, PALS, ENPC or PEARS? No. AHA guidelines dictate certification in other life support classes doesn t automatically grant you certification for BLS. However, you can complete an online BLS class and online test and be validated at the end of your class for BLS certification. You can t test for BLS if you haven t completed the on-line requirements or attended an instructor led class for BLS. 7. How do I take the on-line BLS class to certify in BLS during my ACLS, PALS, PEARS or ENPC class? You can add the option of taking the on-line BLS class when you register on line with Cascade for your ACLS, PALS, PEARS or ENPC classes. When registering for ACLS, PALS, PEARS or ENPC select the add course materials as shown below in the registration instructions. 8. Why can t I enroll in the AHA BLS for Healthcare Provider module in HealthStream on my own or select the direct option? KPNW must purchase seats for the online module. Each time an employee accesses the AHA BLS for Healthcare Provider module on HealthStream, KPNW incurs an expense. Therefore, open enrollment will not be an option. However, HealthStream seats are less expensive if bought in bulk. Therefore, we can save money by going through HealthStream whenever possible. We will assign you to the class once we verity that BLS is required for your job. 9. *CHANGED Will I be able to receive my BLS, ACLS, or PALS card at the end of the class? You will have access to the Life Support ecards through the AHA online. See further information in question 10. 10. *CHANGED Should I make a copy of my renewed card and send it to someone? No. However, you MUST activate the ecard as described in question 12 so that Licensing, Certification and Registration (LCR) Program Specialists can verify online your Life Support Certification. 11. *CHANGED What is ecard Verification? AHA cards are being replaced with Electronic Course completion cards. AHA course completion ecards: Are viewable online, and offer a valid alternative to printed course completion cards. Can be presented to employers as proof of successful completion of an AHA course, and employers can verify the ecard online. May be printed, if needed. Valid for 2 years. 12. *CHANGED I want a copy of the card for my own records or for another employer. How can I get it? When you successfully complete a class, Cascade will assign an ecard code to you and the AHA will email the code with instructions to the email you provided during the class registration process. You will then need to follow the instructions in the email to "activate" the ecard code by accepting AHA terms and answering security questions. Once you click SUBMIT you have "activated" the ecard code. Remember, course completion cannot be verified by Kaiser Permanente or any other employer until you complete the process of 3

accepting terms of the AHA. Once your code has been activated simply copy and paste the ecard code into the appropriate field (see below), 3 Print ecard 1 2 Then hit submit Enter ecard code from Cascade s email as described in question12 13. How much does Cascade Healthcare charge and do I have to pay for it? For clinicians: If Life support certification (BLS, ACLS, or PALS) PEARS or ENPC is a requirement of your job per job description, you can find the coupon code on the NW Permanente web-page and the knowledge portal. You will need to use this coupon code when you enroll in the class in order avoid out of pocket payment and to receive the Kaiser Permanente contracted rate. For non-clinicians: employees who are required to maintain certification per their job description please use the instruction codes listed in this document. Please do not share these coupon codes as they are specific to your role and cost center. Each person has limited use of the coupon code for a given class. If you no-show or arrive late and need to reschedule, you may be expected to pay for the class if KP has already paid for your seat that year using the coupon code. Per the table below, the fees reflect the KP discount for those who are required to maintain certification. IMPORTANT: If you aren t required by your job description to maintain life support certification, check with your manager before enrolling to see whether you will be reimbursed or will need to pay out of pocket. DO NOT use the KP coupon code unless your manager has approved payment for class. This may be an unauthorized use of KP assets and could result in corrective action. 4

14. Can I continue to take Life Support classes from other vendors or independent instructors? Yes. Classes will continue to be available to KP employees through a variety of training centers and independent instructors. When selecting a life support class, be sure that you select a training center or independent instructor which is accredited through the AHA. If you enroll with a training center other than Cascade Healthcare Services, you may need to pay out of pocket and submit for reimbursement through OneLink to your manager; you may only be reimbursed at the rate charged by Cascade which may be less than what other training centers or independent instructors charge. Also be aware if you select a vendor or instructor that is not contracted with KP, KP will have no power to negotiate on your behalf should your experience be unsatisfactory. Class Fee Additional Information BLS for Health Care Providers CPR with AED for nonhealthcare providers **Up to $35.00 ACLS and PALS Initial $190.00 ACLS and PALS Renewal $140.00 ACLS, PALS, PEARS or ENPC with BLS *$27.00 *Fee for New and Renewal BLS Fee for those with access to HealthStream: $45.00 Fee for those who do NOT have access to HealthStream and obtain class key from Cascade: $50.00 Class for staff such as security, EH&S volunteers, etc. **Fee dependent upon class size To obtain BLS certification with ACLS, PALS, PEARS or ENPC classes; you must successfully complete web-based training in HealthStream for BLS prior to class and complete BLS skills practice and testing with instructor. In addition to Advanced Life Support fees listed in the table above, there will be charges for on-line class access as listed. Emergency Nursing Pediatric Care (ENPC) ***$385.00 ***Includes ENPC Manual Fee. If ENPC is required by your job description and you register through Cascade with the coupon code, a manual will be shipped to you within 2 business days of your registration. The Emergency Nurses Association mandates all participants must have their own manual (current edition) for use during the course. Manuals can t be shared during the course. Librarying of books is not allowed because the participants should be able to use the manual as a reference before, during, and after the course. Note: You may take a BLS renewal class from another training center outside of Cascade Healthcare. Kaiser Permanente may only reimburse you according to the numbers provided above. 5

Registration Information To register for Life Support for Health Care Providers (BLS for HCP), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Pediatric Emergency Assessment Recognition and Stabilization (PEARS), or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) with Cascade Training Center, you will be required to enter a coupon code. This coupon code authorizes Cascade to charge Kaiser Permanente for class attendance so that you can attend free of charge. 1. Who is authorized to use the *Coupon Codes? IF you are required to maintain certification in BLS for HCP, PALS, ENPC, PEARS or ACLS by your job description, you are authorized to use the coupon code below when registering for your class with Cascade Training Center. *Do not share the coupon code with others. This code is tied directly to your role and cost center. IF you are NOT required to maintain certification as part of your job, do not use this coupon code. You can register and pay for the class on-line using your credit card. Using the coupon code will result in Kaiser being charged for the class. Kaiser is not responsible for paying for classes that are not required per job description and inappropriate use of the coupon code may result in corrective action. 2. How do I obtain BLS certification concurrently with ACLS, PALS, PEARS, or ENPC? Due to changes in AHA rules, completion of ACLS, PALS, PEARS or ENPC doesn t automatically include BLS certification. To obtain BLS certification concurrently, you can add the option of taking an on-line BLS class when you register with Cascade Health for your ACLS, PALS, PEARS or ENPC classes. You will then have your CPR skills validated during the class you attend. If you are clinical staff who has access to HealthStream: Select the "BLS Online Part 1 Key - Healthstream" option. *Cascade will notify the Kaiser HealthStream administrator within a week of your registration who will then assign the BLS class to you in HealthStream. You will receive a notification of class assignment via Lotus Notes within 3 business days of Cascade s notification to the HealthStream Administrator (Monday through Friday). *Cascade Health will notify the HealthStream administrator within a week of your registration who will then assign the BLS class to you in HealthStream. You will receive a notification of class assignment via Lotus Notes within three (3) business days. If you register more than 60 days in advance, you won't be assigned the BLS module in HealthStream until you are within 30-60 days of your class to ensure your test date is within timeline requirements for BLS certification with your class. If you register through Cascade within a few days of an ACLS, PEARS, PALS, or ENPC class, your BLS online HealthStream module assignment may be delayed and Cascade will not be able to issue your certification until you have provided proof of BLS course completion. If you are a clinician, dentist, work in the dental department, or don t otherwise have access to HealthStream: When registering for ACLS, PALS or PEARS select the BLS Online Part 1 w/ Skills Verification option. Cascade will email you the AHA Key or passcode and log-in information for the online class the next business day. 3. How is my BLS certification verified by Cascade? You will be required to take proof of completion of the HealthStream class to your ACLS, PALS, PEARS or ENPC class at Cascade in order to be validated and certified in BLS.
