Liberty Christian Academy Alternative School Handbook (2013-14)

Restore us, O LORD, and bring us back to you again! Give us back the joys we once had! (Lam. 5:21) This is how the LORD responds: "If you return to me, I will restore you so you can continue to serve me. If you speak good words rather than worthless ones, you will be my spokesman. You must influence them; do not let them influence you! (Jer. 15:19) Lord, your discipline is good, for it leads to life and health. You restore my health and allow me to live! (Isaiah 38:16) Goal The goal of a LCA Alternative School (LCAAS) is to provide an option to LCA families when an educational alternative is needed. Philosophy/Purpose The restorative principle of discipline best reflects how God, Himself deals with us. Because of this, the purpose of LCAAS is restorative in nature. The scriptures clearly inform us that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. In today s society, schools are needed that offer an alternative to regular education. Today s youth are unprecedentedly subjected to sources of negative influences like no other generation before; these influences include the internet, movies, music, and gaming. An alternative school helps some students to better manage these resources for the good. As a Christian alternative school, LCAAS has a distinct advantage over any public school or public alternative option. LCA s Alternative School, where right and wrong are still believed to exist, will greatly help to erase the postmodern confusion influencing young people today. In keeping with the philosophy and purpose of LCAAS, re-enrollment of students back into LCA s regular school is always the goal of LCAAS. LCAAS Students LCAAS will be populated by regular LCA students who have been dismissed from LCA due to exhibiting negative behaviors which have been determined to be disruptive or detrimental to the academic and/or spiritual progress of others. Each student s acceptance into LCAAS will be considered on a case by case basis. LCAAS will also be utilized for any new student that may need an additional opportunity to demonstrate the behavior needed to enroll in LCA. Enrollment into the LCA Alternative School may better be thought of as a time of probation with the goal of re-enrollment back into the regular school setting, whenever possible. There are many biblical examples when God used adverse consequences brought about by people s bad choices to help them become more receptive to the truth than ever before. Each person has a story and a possibility to use their experiences, both good and bad for His glory. The power of love and forgiveness to bring about change should never be underestimated.

Below is a list of behaviors, any one of which can become counterproductive to a school s learning environment. LCAAS is not equipped to meet the needs of every behavioral disorder or issue listed below. Because of this, each student s behavior and circumstances will be considered on a case by case basis by the administrative team. Blatant disregard of rules Self-harm Uncontrollable anger Poor emotional control Manipulative Smoking Drinking Sexually active Lying Cheating Stealing Defiant attitude Bullying Attempted or threats of suicide Conduct Disorder Substance abuse Skipping school Absenteeism/Truancy Multiple school suspensions Fighting/violence As is clearly pointed out above, not all behaviors are the same. Although all can cause problems in an educational setting, some may present a greater challenge towards achieving the full restoration of the individual. While educators are very good at identifying behaviors that impede learning, they often lack the training needed to arrive at some of the root causes of such behavior. Because of this challenge, Christian counselors and pastoral staff well versed in God s Word will be utilized at times. This is where LCAAS has a distinct advantage over other public alternatives. An initial step in the restorative process may require parents to schedule counseling for their child. Upon enrollment into LCAAS, a collaborative process immediately begins in order to craft a plan to measure the alternative student s academic and behavioral progress. All goals and objectives of the plan will be measurable so as to assist in the determination of student progress over time. This process will take place with dialogue and input from all the alternative team members.

Facilities The alternative school facility will consist of one or more self-contained classrooms. LCAAS has access to an activity area for physical education. Some courses will be taught by certified LCA teachers while other will be conducted online through the use of LCA Online Academy. Curriculum An already existing curriculum will be used for LCAAS. This curriculum would be made up of one or a combination of the following: Liberty Christian Academy s already existing regular school curriculum Liberty Christian Academy s regular online curriculum A combination of LCA s regular school and online curriculums Course Electives Course electives may not be offered at LCAAS due to the self-contained nature of an alternative school. Some electives may be offered to LCAAS students who have demonstrated positive behavioral changes as measured by their Individualized Alternative School Restoration Plan. TRBC TRBC s involvement with LCAAS is invaluable in helping LCAAS reach its goal of achieving the full restoration of alternative students. TRBC involvement may include: Bible studies Counseling sessions Pastoral Staff sessions Community Service Projects Youth Group involvement at TRBC Accountability sessions Daily Routines Students will arrive prior to 8 am and upon arrival cell phones and other electronic devices are to be given to the LCAAS instructor. These will be locked up and returned to the student at the end of the school day. Students may be randomly searched for accountability and/or to ensure safety for all. Student s weekly schedule of events will be conveyed to them. They will participate in chapel, bible class, PE, group discussions, and individual computer work. Students will have access to the elementary school cafeteria in North Campus for lunch. Student schedules at LCAAS will be from 8:00am - 2:30pm. Students that attend LCAAS are restricted on where they could go prior to and after school hours. LCAAS students are not allowed to be on the LCA campus in the morning before school or in the afternoon after 2:45pm. Students should not be on Main Street until after 4pm any school day. Students enter the building through the entrance assigned to them and report directly to the LCAAS classroom.

Drug Testing Enrollment into LCAAS will include parental consent for random drug testing. Such drug testing may become a part of the student s plan and continuation at LCAAS would be contingent upon the results of such testing. Any scheduled or random drug testing will be conducted at the discretion of administration with whom they recommend. Drug testing is the financial responsibility of the parent and the cost will be added to their account. Attendance Students are expected to be in class and on time everyday school is in session. At five tardies, the student may receive a one day suspension. Any further tardies will result in a meeting with administration and possible dismissal. At two unexcused absences, the student may receive one day suspension. Any further absences will result in a meeting with administration and possible dismissal. Extra-Curricular Events LCAAS students are not allowed to attend LCA events or activities and students are not eligible to participate in any extra-curricular activities or athletics as long as they are enrolled in the alternative school. Community Service Community service is required by every 9-12 grade student as a requirement for graduation. The same 20 hours a year requirement is required of any student in the alternative school. Discipline The students in the alternative school are privileged to be able to have the opportunity to be in school and they are held to a higher level of behavioral expectations than students in regular school. Because of the nature of the alternative school, any student that would receive any discipline infraction may be subject to being dismissed from school. The administration will handle these situations on a case by case situation. Medical Concerns Any student being considered for placement in the alternative school whom may need medicine or have any medical condition will be required to share in writing their specific needs and requirements at or immediately before the time they read and sign the policies for LCAAS. The safety of each student is the first priority and must be considered in each situation. LCA reserves the right to deny placement into the LCAAS based on not having the staff or capability to meet all of the medical needs of any student. Weather related issues and school schedule The alternative school will operate on the same schedule as long as the regular school is on a normal bell schedule. If LCA is closed, the alternative school will be closed.
