CARING FOR YOUR BMW. QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE.
ALWAYS LIKE THE FIRST DAY. Your BMW will always be the benchmark of sheer driving pleasure, even after leaving the showroom. But as high as BMW standards are set, general usage and daily exposure to traffic and weather will cause wear and tear. However, consistent care and maintenance will preserve the aesthetics, functionality and safety of your vehicle. This guide will help you maintain the perfection of your vehicle from the very first day you drive it. The information contained in this brochure is a general guide. For further guidance to ensure maximum enjoyment and on the safety aspects of your BMW, please refer to your Owner s Handbook. RUN ON WITH RUN-FLAT TYRES. BMW vehicles are fitted with BMW Run-Flat Tyres, or the Run-Flat System Component (RSC). Run-Flat Tyres have emergency running properties that provide a convenient safety advantage in the event of punctures. Even with loss of pressure, these tyres enable you to continue driving. In the event of a puncture, or when the run-flat indicator (RPA) signals a pressure drop from loss of air, your driving style must adapt to the road and load conditions. In particular, shock loads and fast cornering should be avoided. The vehicle can travel for a maximum distance of 80km at a maximum speed of 80km/h on low tyre pressure. IMPORTANT: Tyres are covered under a separate warranty. External impact and user influenced damages are not covered by the warranty of the manufacturer. More information can be found in the Wheels and Tyres section of your Owner s Handbook.
INSPECT YOUR TYRE CONDITION. Tyres are the only contact point between your vehicle and the road, so it is important to maintain their optimum condition by inspecting them frequently. New tyres have tread wear indicators positioned at the base of the tread groove. These indicators make it easy to know when a worn out tyre should be replaced. Keep an eye out for any damage to the wheel, rim, and tyre tread such as the presence of foreign bodies, unusual wear and insufficient depth. Conduct wheel alignment regularly or periodically during oil service for optimum performance. IMPORTANT: An increased risk of aquaplaning when driving in wet conditions is present at tread depths of below 3mm. Tyres should be changed every 3 years due to the wear and tear caused by ageing. CHECK YOUR TYRE PRESSURE. Check your tyre pressure regularly to ensure correct inflation. Incorrect inflation could hinder the stability of your vehicle and lead to possible damage. Specific tyre pressures for approved tyre sizes are labelled in the door aperture of the driving compartment. This is visible when the door is open. Check and adjust tyre pressure, including the spare compact wheel (if applicable) at least twice a month. If you have a tyre pressure monitoring system, the system needs to be initialised each time your tyre pressure is adjusted. This can be done quickly and easily by the vehicle s user. For further information on the specified tyre pressures for your vehicle and the tyre pressure monitoring system, please see your Owner s Handbook or speak to your BMW Service Advisor.
LOW PROFILE WHEELS AND TYRE CONDITION. Compared to conventional wheel and tyre combinations, larger alloy wheels are normally fitted with low profile tyres. Generally speaking, the larger the road wheel, the lower the tyre profile. Large wheels and low profile tyre combinations are able to cope with the demands of high performance vehicles, providing improved handling, grip, traction, and braking stability. In order to prevent damage to your alloy wheels, it is advisable to take precaution when approaching pot holes, road bumps, kerbs and other obstacles which could pose significant impact or damage. PROTECT YOUR ENGINE AGAINST WATER DAMAGE. To protect your engine from water, water should not submerge the lowest part of your bumper. If you find yourself driving through a flood or deep waters, drive no faster than a speed of approximately 10km/h or 6mph. Exceeding the water depth and walking speed may result in damage to the engine, electrical system and transmission. IF YOUR ENGINE STALLS. If your engine stalls or turns off because of possible damage from water, DO NOT attempt to restart the engine. Exit your vehicle and contact BMW Voice or the nearest BMW Authorised Dealer for further assistance. Please note that damages due to water are not covered by the vehicle s warranty. More information can be found in your Owner s Handbook. Please refer to Driving Precautions.
PROTECT AND CARE FOR YOUR ENGINE. The pistons in your engine travel at immense speeds of up to 20 meters per second. Thus, changing your engine oil frequently is not a chore but an investment towards years of proud BMW ownership. Driving patterns and fuel additives are some of the factors that lead to a build up of impurities. Hence preventive maintenance care, in addition to your periodical maintenance service, can ensure better protection for your engine. IMPORTANT: Moving parts need a certain time to achieve maximum operating efficiency as a unit. Please refer to the Driving hints/driving precautions section of your Owner s Manual for more information on the run-in period of your vehicle. LOOK AFTER THE PAINTWORK. Regular cleaning with genuine BMW Car Care products will protect the paintwork of your vehicle against long-term wear and tear, safeguarding it from fuel spillage, bird droppings, grit and salt. To reduce the long-term effects of particularly aggressive substances, always remove spilt fuel, oil, grease, brake fluid, tree sap, salt, grit, and bird droppings as soon as possible. When paintwork is specially treated, water should form into large droplets on the surface. When this no longer happens, exterior protection systems such as BMW Seal and Protect must be applied. Do not use alcohol/solvent-based cleaning agents. BMW Car Care products have been carefully formatted and tested in both laboratory and practical situations to provide the best care and protection for your vehicle.

MAXIMISING THE LIFESPAN OF YOUR VEHICLE S BATTERIES. All batteries are subject to gradual deterioration. Charge and discharge cycles, permanent self-discharge through electric loads and increased power consumption are the agents of battery ageing. Frequent short trips may lead to undercharging of the battery. Avoid excessive or sustained use of electrical functions in the vehicle while the engine is off. Make sure your vehicle s batteries are fully charged if your vehicle will not be driven for a long period of time. If your battery is drained, do not drive without recharging it. You may risk losing whatever charge that may be left over the course of your vehicle being idle. Do not install third party accessories. Only use Original BMW Parts and Accessories. Exposure to frequent, excessively high temperatures can reduce battery life. Park your vehicle in the shade on hot days. Routine maintenance is key. Recharge and discharge the battery as often as possible to maintain its state of charge. Be sure to switch off all onboard electronics and devices before turning off the engine. Examples of what to switch off are: interior lights, radio and miscellaneous music or video devices.
