Choices for sub-internships include maternal fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology, gynecologic oncology, urogynecology/female pelvic floor and reconstruction, labor and delivery nights, labor and delivery days, and benign gynecology/minimally invasive surgery. Students are required to give one formal presentation and take three in-house, overnight, labor and delivery calls during their rotation. Formal interviews will be grouped so students will have the opportunity to interview with the program director, associate program director, clerkship coordinator, as well as two additional staff and a resident on a single day. Interview days generally take place twice a month, July-October. For specific dates, please contact Dr. Gould. To sign up for a rotation at SAMMC, please contact Dr. Gould with your preferred dates and top 3 choices for rotations. You will also need to contact the GME department at SAMMC for formal scheduling of your elective rotation and in processing requirements. They simply need to know you want to rotate through the Ob/GYN department and that you have clearance for access to patient records (this may take up to 30 days so please plan ahead). The breakdown of the rotation will be done within the department. The GME office requires all requests to be made by email at usarmy.jbsa.medcom-bamc.list.saushecclerkship@mail.mil.

Students have the opportunity to rotate through the following specialties: maternal fetal medicine (MFM), reproductive endocrinology infertility (REI), urogynecology (URO), gynecologic oncology (GYN ONC), minimally invasive surgery (MIS). Students can do all 4 weeks on a single service or can opt for a split rotation with 2 weeks on 2 different sub-specialties. During the rotation, students are required to give a formal presentation (limited to 7 minutes; 10 slides), as well as take 2 overnight calls on labor and delivery (1 weekday, 1 weekend). Formal interviews will be conducted during the rotation and students will be notified of the interview date upon arrival. A personal statement and CV will be requested prior to the interview. If you are unable to rotate at WRNMMC, but have a genuine interest in learning more about our program and applying for a residency position, you are strongly encouraged to set up an interview. To schedule an interview please contact Dr. Katie Shvartsman and she will send you the dates of our interview schedule. Interviews take place on Thursday mornings approximately twice a month (July through October).

The choices that are currently offered are as follows with the comprising team: Antepartum service: MFM staff, fellow, R4 and R1 Reproductive endocrinology: Staff, R3 and R1 Gynecologic oncology: Staff, R3 and R1 Urogynecology/female pelvic floor and reconstruction: Staff, R4, and R1 Labor and delivery nights: Traditionally R3 and R1 Labor and delivery days: Traditionally R2 and R1 (often shared with emergency residency intern) Benign gynecology/minimally invasive surgery: Rotating Staff; R4 and R2 Students are required to give one formal presentation of their choosing. They will be assigned a staff mentor and a resident mentor. All calls will be in-house with the labor and delivery service. A single day of interview will be scheduled, which will be with the program director, assistant program director, MFM staff, REI staff, GYN ONC staff, Midwifery Service, and residents. Applicants are required to apply through the Medical Education FYGME Branch, Falls Church VA, in addition to applying to the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS), developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). For more detailed information on applying for FYGME, contact the Medical Education Office, FGYME Branch, Falls Church VA, 1-800-793-5970. Criteria for selection include academic performance in medical school, USMLE scores, letters of recommendation, demonstrated interest in the military service, leadership potential, and physical, mental and moral fitness. As senior medical students, the department offers 4-week electives including: Maternal Fetal Medicine, Endocrine-Infertility, Gynecology Oncology and Gynecology Surgery. During these electives, students will be allowed to function as sub-interns. Educational meetings occur each morning. Before conference, senior medical students are expected to round on their service. Conferences are given by faculty and senior residents and cover the breadth of obstetric and gynecologic topics. Labor and Delivery board signout occurs each morning after conference and is attended by faculty who lead discussions about management and other pertinent issues. Interviews will be conducted the last Wednesday of your rotation. You will interview with staff physicians as well as residents this usually is an entire afternoon. They will also do a week of nights at the civilian hospital (Miami Valley Hospital), as well as a week of OB-days while at the Valley. When at the base, they are expected to round on their post-op or post-partum patients, and should be prepared for checkout at 0700. Uniforms are expected while at the base, but not required at the Valley. When at the valley, night float begins at 1700 on Sunday, and 1730 Mon-Thurs. They will be working primarily with the 2nd year resident, helping in the PICU, antepartum service, and preterm triage patients. OB days while at the Valley begin at 0600 for pre-rounding on the antepartum service, and include deliveries, running the antepartum and PICU service, and OB clinic. The valley is approximately 20 minutes away from the base, and a vehicle is necessary. There are no set interview days while at WP, but most attendings are more than willing to meet as long as you given them a heads up in advance.
