1 ANES-402 Overview PAIN MEDICINE EVALUATION & INTERVENTION By Debra Kerrigan Fellowship Coordinator 2/23/2010
2 WELCOME PAIN MEDICINE EVALUATION AND INTERVENTION DESCRIPTION This clerkship will provide an introduction to contemporary multidisciplinary pain medicine, which will include outpatient and inpatient acute pain, chronic pain, and cancer pain. Students will have exposure to diagnostic evaluations and interventional therapies.
3 OBJECTIVES Students will learn to perform a pain oriented evaluation and physical examination, learn to understand the known diagnostic classifications of pain and their treatments, and the complex interplay of medical, psychological and social issues with pain. Students will also learn the basic indications for the practice of analgesic therapy, both invasive and noninvasive.
4 GENERAL INFORMATION Student performance assessed daily, via interactions with attending physicians, fellows, residents and staff. Teaching will include 3 hours. of lecture/week, 3 hrs. of direct teaching/day, small group discussions weekly, an ample training from pain fellows and resident physicians throughout rotation. Student expected to perform minimum of 2 history/physical exam/day, including formal presentation to attending. Student will do 1 informal presentation on pain-related topic of choice, including hand-out given to attending, fellows, residents, and other students. This should be presented by the fourth week of your rotation as a part of the Grand Rounds meeting or at lunch time before you go to the procedures suite. (Please provide a copy of your presentation or hand out to Debra Kerrigan, Fellowship Coordinator.) Physician will evaluate patients either following the initial interview by the student, or in conjunction with the student; inpatients will be seen and evaluated similarly.
5 REQUIRED Daily attendance at clinic, interventional procedures suite, and/or inpatient wards, participation in each of these realm, work-up of at least 2 patients each clinic day, timely completion of reading assignments, and attendance at all scheduled lecture.
6 MEDICAL STUDENT CASE LOG You will be given a Medical Student Case Log form for you to complete during your rotation. This will allow you to track the types of patients you have seen and the different procedures you have observed.

8 QUIZ You will be given a medical student rotation questionnaire to test your knowledge when you first begin your rotation. This may be used at the end of your rotation as well to determine your further understanding of pain medicine.
9 SAMPLE WORK SCHEDULE Daily Schedule: 7:30 8:00 a.m. In-patient rounds with resident and/or fellow 8:00 Noon Perlman Clinic or Moores Cancer Procedures 12:00 1:00 p.m. lunch 1:00 5:00 p.m. Perlman Clinic or Moores Cancer Procedures Please note: Tuesday and Friday afternoons you may be scheduled at the VA Medical Center for Procedures. ANES-402 Lectures scheduled at 4:00 p.m. (Please refer to your didactic schedule for topic, presenter and location) Wednesday Mornings 7:30 a.m. Pain Medicine Grand Rounds, followed at 8:30 a.m. by a Core Conference Lecture
10 CPM SCHEDULE The Med-4 students are assigned to one of the following clinics: the Pain Clinic located in the Perlman Medical Center in Suite 2-C, the Moores Cancer Procedures Suite and the VA Medical Center Procedures Suite. The Med-4 students will be assigned on a rotating basis. This is to ensure equal exposure to the pain faculty and the various clinics at the VA, Perlman and the Moores Cancer Center. Please do not ask for additional procedures time at the VA. 11 CPM SCHEDULE TEMPLATE This is an example of the CPM Template. It contains a wealth of information including your rotation location, your didactics schedule and the Grand Rounds schedule. If you plan on being out more than 3 days, you will need to schedule additional time to make up for time lost.
