Attacking the roadblocks preventing aggressive adoption of Cloud Standards: How SNIA and other standards orgs are developing standards that benefit high priority use cases. John Eastman, CTO, Presented by Cloud Storage Initiative
The lack of Cloud Standards is a roadblock - When can we expect the road to be open? Examine the state of the industry, where standards are needed and the status of availability Closer look into one of the hottest area for Clouds - Standards for Cloud Storage (Data Storage as a Service) Show how the SNIA with its Cloud Data Management Interface Standard (CDMI) is leading the way Show how SNIA Cloud Storage Initiative supports adoption of the standard MezeoCloud storage services layer for cloud scale applications Discuss how MezeoCloud TM supports CDMI Benefits to a real-life end user customer
Real Customers, Real Concerns Can I provide the Security and Privacy required by law? Can I move my apps and my data into a cloud, and from Cloud to Cloud? Can I run my HPC Grid apps in a cloud? Can Cloud Service Providers meet my provisioning requirements in an SLA? Can I control my software licenses in the cloud? Am I going into this alone or are there others who I can share experiences with?

Are the standards gaining traction? YES! Example: SNIA Cloud Data Management Interface specification Traction 6 vendors with commercial implementations Two open source implementations OpenStack Swift, JCloud International adoption by Vision Cloud, NIST SAJACC, Italian Government, GITCF Japan, and more Adopted as an International Standards by the International Standards Organization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Vendor adoption support by SNIA Cloud Storage Initiative International Plugfests Reference Implementation Conformance test suite 24 member companies of the SNIA Cloud Storage Initiative
What do standards mean to you? A Mezeo case Study MezeoCloud is a deployable Cloud Storage Platform Provides API access to storage Includes CDMI Common Enterprise Use Case File Sync and Share (MezeoFile) Backup & Archive target
What do standards mean to you? A Mezeo case Study Data Management End-user storage provisioning Storage policy management Access Data via Standard - CDMI Not dependant on proprietary / vendor API We see enterprise developers leveraging this interface In-house custom applications Integrations corporate portals Open Source & 3 rd Party Applications becoming available Take advantage of other vendor s applications Your Data is Portable CDMI defines a common format for import/export Import from other storage clouds Export data to other storage clouds
Summary Cloud Standards are the tools to deliver the Cloud Like the national transportation was in the 50 s, some will remove roadblocks, some will pave roads where they are needed, others will build bridges As the technology improves they will deliver on the promise Cloud Standards are a reality Some, such as SNIA CDMI, OGF OCCI, and DMTF CIMI and OVF are here today. Others are on the horizon The standards community has heard the cry and is mobilized to attack the problem. Cloud Storage is leading the pack The ISO standard for Data Storage As a Service (DaaS) is here (CDMI) and vendors are rushing to support it. SNIA and it s members are aggressively supporting vendor compliance efforts with Plugfests and Development tools.
