King Pin and Upper Coupler Inspection Before coupling, inspect king pin for irregular wear or damage Also inspect upper coupler plate for cracks or other damage After coupling, inspect jaws of 5 th wheel to assure proper lock 14

Landing Leg and Registration Box Inspect landing leg looking for bent components including leg, bracing / gusseting, spreader-bar Look for cracks in gussets and/or loose fasteners Check that legs are level and crossshaft is in place Check for sandshoes Make sure handle is present and secure and hook is in place for handle Check registration box for chassis registration and paperwork matching FHWA decal 17

Tandem Area Inspect for possible damage to slider sub-frame Inspect front spring hanger, front leaf spring, spring arm Make sure slider pin handle is in place 21
Tandem Area Inspect leaf spring on opposite side and swing arm Inspect brake chamber, push rod and slack adjuster (with under-slung brake chambers, watch for damage to push-rods from chassis stacking) Inspect brake shoe, lining and drum on opposite side Perform same inspection at front left / right and rear left / right positions 22
Tandem Area Inspect thickness of brake lining (1/4 minimum) Look for cracks running length of lining or sections missing. Check both lower and upper shoe / lining on all four wheel positions Inspect for cracks / damage to brake drum 23
Tire Inspection 24
Tire Inspection, Radial/ Hub Piloted Inspect for tread depth (minimum 2/32 in 2 major grooves.) Inspect for defects / damage on tire (skid flat areas, channel cracks, weather checking, bulges, foreign debris, separated cap. Check tire pressure (see sidewall for recommended pressure (typ. 90 110 PSI radial) Check for loose, missing, broken studs, lug nuts Inspect for leaking hub 25
Tire Inspection, Spoked Bias-Ply Check for same tire defects damage as for radials (tread depth, puncture, deterioration, etc.) Check tire pressure (see sidewall for recommended pressure (typ. 85 PSI bias-ply / tube-type) Check for loose, missing, broken studs, lug nuts, wedges, cracked spacer between wheels. Look for evidence of wheels spun on hub Key Ring Tread Depth Gauge Inspect for leaking hub 26

Rear Bolster Area Inspection Inspect mud flaps to assure that both a present, are securely mounted to the bracket and cover the width of the duals Inspect the mud flap bracket to assure that it is securely mounted to the chassis Inspect slider subframe from rear of tandems. Inspect rear axle brake components (brakes shoes, linings, drums, chambers, pushrods, slack adjusters) Inspect rear spring hangers, leaf springs 29
Rear Bolster Area Inspection Inspect twist-locks to assure container is properly seated on twist-lock head. Assure twist-lock head is crossways to lock container onto chassis Inspect handle and latch to assure that twist-lock is positively latched Begin inspecting bolster area starting with corner marker light 30
Rear Bolster Area Inspection Inspect lights on rear of chassis: o Corner marker lights o Brake lights o Tail Lights o Center marker lights o License plate light Inspect ICC bumper / rear under-ride guard for solid mounting, bent horizontal member (3 deflection in any direction) Check for license plate / tag Repeat all steps on right side of chassis 31
