Goal #3 Reduce Land Contamination 2004 Accomplishments: Bi-national Border Forum on Air and Waste Held in Cd. Juarez September 2004 This event resulted in the announcement of using 800,000 tires a year as Tire Derived Fuel (TDF) in a local cement kiln. This event also showcased the paving of a road in Ciudad Juarez with rubberized asphalt.

Goal #3 Reduce Land Contamination 2004 Accomplishments: EPA R6 funded the reporting of waste manifest data on the Border Compliance Assistance Center web site. The Border Compliance Assistance Center became operational spring 2003 to help businesses understand and comply with import/export of hazardous waste regulations on both sides of the U.S./Mexico border. R6 funded a pilot effort to develop a much needed database for hazardous waste manifests which will be made available mid-2005 on the Border Compliance Assistance Center website: http://www.bordercenter.org

2003-2004 2004 Border 2012 Grants for Waste Total of 5 projects were awarded; 157K Four projects were funded in the Tri-State Region Motor Oil Recycling And Education In Montana Demonstration Project (El Paso Solar Energy (EPSEA); 29K Establish a drop-off off recycling center in the Montana Vista colonias.. Instill the habit of recycling. Managing Used Oil in the El Paso Ciudad Juarez Area (University of Texas at Austin); 30K Identify needs and develop an action plan to improve institutional capacity for waste management and pollution prevention of used oil in the El Paso-Ciudad Juárez area. Illegal Dump Site Clean-ups (South Central Solid Waste Authority);45K Clean up illegal dump sites, arroyos, rivers, vacant lots, desert; and privately owned ranches. Border Tribe Household Hazardous Waste Reduction; 25K Develop capacity for the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo to conduct multimedia outreach from a tribal perspective to create awareness with improper use and disposal d of household hazardous waste

2004-2005 2005 Border 2012 Grants Region 6 has just completed awarding over $800K in federal grants to accomplish Border 2012 program priorities along the border Grants included: Watershed monitoring and education Improving health Biodiesel market development Waste tire cleanup and planning Solid waste management Reduction of illegal dumping Health professional capacity building Pesticides exposure reduction Health capacity building in colonias Joint hazardous material education and response Environmental education

2004-2005 2005 Border 2012 Grants in the Area of Waste Total funding allocated for waste related projects; $157K Five proposals were invited to submit full proposals out of 16 that applied Three Tire Projects (two in the Four-State Region and one border-wide) One Waste management Project in the Four-State Region One illegal dumping project in the Tri-State Region
