SIT2LRN offers you the opportunity to study wherever you have a computer with access to the Internet under our Zero Fees Scheme. APPLICATION CHECKLIST Please use the following checklist to ensure that all relevant information and documentation has been included, and RETURN TO US WITH YOUR APPLICATION. Remember, your application will be assessed based on the information that you provide us with. Processing of your application will be interrupted if we need to come back to you for missing information. WHAT IS THE ZERO FEES SCHEME? The Zero Fees Scheme means we do not charge tuition fees. However, there is a Student Direct Material Cost that you need to pay and an administration fee. The administration fee is for processing your application and the Student Direct Material Cost gives you secure access to Blackboard our online learning environment and to student support services throughout your study with us. WHO QUALIFIES FOR THE ZERO FEES SCHEME? A New Zealand citizen completing the full qualification or An Australian citizen/new Zealand Resident or Permanent Resident who is currently living in New Zealand and completing the full qualification. INSTRUCTIONS TO HELP YOU WITH YOUR APPLICATION: 1. Read the attached Programme Fact Sheet and the SIT2LRN FAQs on the SIT website and find out if you meet the application criteria for both the programme and the unit/s you wish to study. 2. Check your eligibility for Zero Fees. If you are not eligible to study under this scheme, please call 0800 748 257 for further options. 3. Fill in the attached Flexible Learning Application Form & Enrolment Contract checking that: a. If you are a returning student you: Fill in the blue dot sections of the application form only. Attach photo identification (this must be a copy of your driver s licence, passport or 18+ card). This does not need to be verified. Attach supporting documents, as outlined on the previous page, and the completed checklist. b. If you are a new student you: Fill in all sections of the application form. Attach a copy of your verified ID (a copy of either your birth certificate or passport which has been stamped and signed by any one of the following JP, Barrister, Court Deputy Registrar, Member of Parliament, Land Transport NZ, Public Trust, member of the New Zealand Police, School Principal, Minister of Religion or GP). Attach all academic documentation to support your application including copies of any certificates of courses you have undertaken / NZQA record of achievement / transcripts / CV. Attach supporting documents, as outlined on the previous page including letter of intent, and the completed checklist. 4. Remember to sign and date the application form and check it one last time to confirm you have included all the required information and supporting documents. Your application will be assessed based on the information that you provide. Missing information will delay the processing of your application. 5. You will receive acknowledgement confirming that we have received your application. Processing may take up to three weeks, however we will get in touch with you sooner if we require further documentation. Once your application has been accepted you will be sent a conditional offer of acceptance with an invoice and instructions on how to make payment. Once we have received your payment (or if you have opted to pay by Student Loan or Purchase Order) you will be sent an Enrolment Confirmation Letter and Important Information Booklet. Closer to the start of the intake you will receive a Time To Get Started Letter which will give you all the necessary information, tools and guidance to start your study with us. GRADUATE OUTCOME STATEMENT At the successful completion of this programme, students will have the required competencies to function successfully and effectively at operational levels within the renewable energy sector. PROGRAMME FACT SHEET PROGRAMME CONTENT The programme is made up of the following papers: RET116 Energy Auditing (Level 5) 8 credits This foundation paper provides an introduction to the physical concepts of energy and power, leading to the knowledge and skills required to conduct a household energy audit as an essential first step when considering installing any small scale renewable energy technology. It also provides a technical introduction to the solar energy resource for application in later papers. RET143 Sustainability (Level 3) 6 credits This paper presents an initial overview of sustainability concepts, which forms a general framework for the study of later papers. It provides: An understanding of the need for sustainable development in terms of the degradation of the ecosystems on which all life depends A purposeful understanding of the nature of sustainability Knowledge of the changes needed to achieve sustainability, particularly in relation to energy issues. RET114 Introduction to Renewable Energy Technologies (Level 4) 8 credits This foundation paper is a general introduction to renewable energy technologies, with an emphasis on commercially available technology and small-scale applications. It provides: Preliminary technical knowledge of currently available renewable energy technologies Knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages of each renewable energy technology, including its environmental impacts Knowledge of the current global outlook for each renewable energy technology An introduction to renewable energy micro generation in New Zealand. RET125 Solar Water Heating Systems (Level 4) 6 credits This paper provides knowledge of the operation and design of an appropriate solar water heating system for a given application. RET122 Photovoltaic Power Systems (Level 4) 8 credits This paper provides knowledge of the operation and design of photovoltaic cells and power systems. It also includes an introduction to electricity and electrical systems. RET126 Energy Efficient Building Design (Level 4) 6 credits This paper provides an understanding of the principles used to design energy efficient buildings. It covers the theory and application of design variables including insulation, ventilation, thermal mass, window positioning and shading. These are explored in the context of thermal comfort, climate type and site considerations. RET127 Wind Energy Conversion Systems 1 (Level 4) 6 credits This paper provides knowledge of the operation and design of Wind Energy Conversion Systems (WECS), their siting, and the nature of New Zealand s wind energy resource. RET129 Micro-hydro Systems (Level 4) 6 credits This paper provides knowledge of the operation and design of Micro-Hydro Energy Systems (MHS), and their practical application in a case study which includes an economic analysis of a completed project. RET119 Stand-alone Renewable Power System (Level 4) 6 credits This paper provides knowledge of the function, operation, specification and design of Stand-alone Power Systems (SPS) and their component parts, including battery storage of electrical energy. PROGRAMME FACT SHEET SUGGESTED STUDY PATH/COMBINATIONS Part time study is recommended for this qualification. The number of credits selected per intake should depend on work, family, and other commitments. Learners must complete papers in the order that they are listed on the application form. The first three papers, RET116, RET143 and RET114, contain foundation knowledge essential for the successful completion of the remaining papers. The following part time study paths are guides only; learners may do fewer or more papers, time permitting: FULL TIME STUDY Full time study is completing all 60 credits in one intake. However, due to the intensive workload of the programme we do not recommend that learners enrol in more than 48 credits per intake. Documentation To qualify as a domestic student, and so to be entitled to the Government tuition subsidy, you must be a citizen of New Zealand (including students from the Cook Islands, Tokelau, or Niue who have New Zealand citizenship), resident or permanent resident of New Zealand or a citizen or permanent resident of Australia residing in New Zealand.
