Caring for the Alcohol Withdrawal Patient Deirdre Doyle, RN, MHA/MSN,CNML Yale New Haven Hospital o CIWA self-auditing tool to keep track of patients alcohol detoxification symptoms and scores. o De-escalation training o CAGE screening on admission to any patient who answers yes to drinking. o If any CAGE question is answered yes, the nurse places a Social Work consult. o Use of dedicated Social Worker to screen patients for appropriateness for AA visit o CIWA protocol updated across health system. o All components were standardized and order sets created in the electronic health record in order to correctly utilize the alcohol detox protocol and minimize optionality in medication ordering o AA volunteers now coming in to visit patients at the bedside on since the o Created in conjunction with volunteer services, social work, community liaisons, MDs, PAs, and nursing staff to provide patients with a direct link to the AA community while still inpatient. o Yale University Motivational Interviewing (MI) study 5 RNs trained on the techniques of MI and interviewing patients who agree to be part of the study. Decrease in LOS = 0.45 days x 422 cases @ $4,000/day = $759, 600 Value of a Volunteer = $28/hour x 8.5 hours = $238 1/7= 14% readmit rate when seen by AA.
