Agilent E3830 Series Wide-bandwidth Signal Analyzer Custom Systems 100 MHz Bandwidth Microwave Vector Signal Analysis

The measurement challenge 2 Many advanced microwave applications involve complex wideband and time-varying signals such as: Satellite systems LMDS W-CDMA Microwave digital radio Radar/EW Surveillance Signal monitoring Measurement challenges faced by designers, manufacturers, and end users in these wideband application areas require transient analysis; analog and digital demodulation; and precision amplitude and phase measurements of frequency-translating devices and systems. Complete characterization of high data rate signals requires instrumentation capable of high-speed capture and analysis in both frequency and time domains. These wide-bandwidth measurement requirements are satisfied by linking three of Agilent Technologies most powerful signal analysis tools: the 71910A/P wide-bandwidth receiver, the 89410A vector signal analyzer (VSA), and the 54845A Infiniium oscilloscope.

The Agilent 71910A/P Wide-bandwidth Receiver 3 The 71910A/P is part of the Modular Measurement System (MMS) family. This instrument is a high performance microwave spectrum analyzer with the additional feature of several widebandwidth IF outputs. The 71910A includes the 70004A display mainframe, while the 71910P uses the 70207B PC display. High-performance spectrum analysis The 71910A/P features 100-MHz to 26.5-GHz frequency coverage and higher with external mixers. Adding the 11970A or 11974A mixer easily covers Ka-Band applications found in satellite, LMDS and microwave digital radio. A wide dynamic range helps ensure that signals of various amplitudes are accurately measured. The wide IF bandwidths, up to 100 MHz, are used to capture wideband signals such as those used in wireless communications and radar. A linear IF signal path provides good signal fidelity. The Agilent 71910A/P provides a variety of outputs for baseband signal analysis. It provides a wideband 321.4-MHz IF output; a linear video output; and optional demodulated FM, analog I/Q, and 70-MHz/140-MHz IF outputs. The 70620B 26.5-GHz preamplifier and the 83050A 40-GHz preamplifiers are also available for measuring low-level signals such as those common to LMDS and W-CDMA.

The receiver, oscilloscope, and VSA: a very powerful combination 4 The Agilent E3830 series widebandwidth signal analyzer systems use the industry-standard 89410A vector signal analyzer as the measurement engine for the advanced analysis of complex signals. The 71910A/P wide-bandwidth receiver provides flexible high-performance microwave spectrum analysis on the RF and microwave carrier. Functions include out-of-band performance, interference, and spurious signal measurements. The receiver also provides the wide-bandwidth IF output to the 54845A Infiniium oscilloscope and the 89410A VSA. Adding the Agilent 54845A Infiniium oscilloscope as a highspeed digitizer provides the 100-MHz wide-bandwidth signal capture. The 100-MHz bandwidth signal is then ported as digital data to the 89410A VSA for complex signal analysis, providing true 100-MHz information bandwidth. The state-of-the-art DSP-based technology of the VSA offers a comprehensive range of signal analysis tools. Digital modulation analysis The VSA with optional vector modulation analysis can test systems and measure the quality of digitally modulated signals. Measurements are simplified because no external filters, coherent carriers, or symbol timing signals are needed. A selection of modulation formats, variable number of symbols and a variety of filter shapes are available. A wide range of display formats are provided, including eye, constellation, and vector diagrams, in addition to numerous error and other signal quality analysis results. Precision AM, FM, and PM demodulation The 89410A VSA can characterize phase noise, oscillator frequency transitions, and the amplitude or frequency behavior of transmitters at turn-on. Signals can be analyzed for instantaneous amplitude, frequency, or phase versus time, and the time-domain results can be translated into the frequency domain for further analysis. Both deliberate and unintentional (or incidental) modulation can be characterized completely.

5 Time-selective spectrum analysis The entire time-domain signal can be viewed and a specific portion selected for frequencydomain analysis of burst or time-varying signals. The selected data is identified with gate markers, and all frequencydomain parameters including noise or signal-to-noise can then be measured. The signal does not have to be repetitive. The Agilent 54845A Infiniium Oscilloscope The 54845A Infiniium oscilloscope is a 1.5-GHz bandwidth, 8-Giga-sample per second highspeed digitizer. This highperformance capability provides a very flat frequency response over the 100-MHz bandwidth of the signal analyzer system. The captured 100-MHz bandwidth signals are ported as digital data to the 89410A VSA for complex signal analysis. Using the 54845A scope as a state-of-the-art highspeed digitizer provides the high-performance measurement capability of the wide-bandwidth signal analyzer system. The Agilent 71910A/P, 89410A and 54845A each provide maximum flexibility and protect your investment in measurement assets. The Infiniium oscilloscope allows precision time-domain measurements, complementing the spectrum and modulation measurements of the wide-bandwidth receiver and VSA. Custom systems The E3830 series wide-bandwidth signal analyzer systems are available as custom systems, engineered to your specific measurement requirements. System software is included with a variety of computer options and rack cabinet mounting. Specifications are provided for each custom application and individual instruments are programmable via GPIB. Custom application software is also available. To optimize the system for your needs, Agilent Technologies can develop, procure, and integrate specialized signal routing, signal conditioning, and other customized equipment.
