Texas Market and ZSE Interoperability ZigFesTx First quarter, 2010, worked out details & test plans May, 2010, CenterPoint & Oncor (with respective meter vendors), and the ZigBee Alliance held the first 3 day event in Ft. Worth Code was written on the spot Success (in many cases) was a successful pairing with a meter 5 additional events were held in 2010 Progress was fast and dramatic 13
Texas ZigFest Results Allowed many manufacturers their first opportunity to work with commercial meters Allowed all parties to quickly find and resolve firmware issues (meters and HAN devices) Identified different interpretations and areas for new features in ZigBee Smart Energy version 1.0 Issues discovered were fed back into CCBs that were incorporated into ZigBee Smart Energy version 1.1 14

Purpose Overall Objectives: 1. To drive consumer conservation behavior through the adoption of real-time energy feedback devices 2. To seed a viable market for such devices in established retail channels Driving Principles: Meet the customers where they are Let the market decide One size may not fit all Create a sustainable ecosystem 16
The Process I II II IV Product Requirements Vendor Engagement Testing and Approval Retail Market Launch 17
Stage I: Product Requirements Purpose: The Product Requirements outline minimum features to be compatible/eligible for BC Hydro systems and programs. Process: This has been created with input from Internal teams (technology, conservation, procurement, marketing) External contacts in industry External counterparts in other utilities, standards organizations Reviewed hundreds of features and considerations, narrowed them down to a manageable set (abt. 40 items) Outcome: Completed preliminary Requirements 18
Stage II: Vendor Engagement Purpose: Gain feedback from the market, revise, communicate our plans Process: Vendor workshops to review Requirements, describe program details, share customer research, retail partner conversations, review the program, customer adoption patterns, messaging Content: o Sanity Check of Requirements and overall program o Deep dives into specific Requirements o Engagement, relationship building Outcome: Requirements and testing program finalized, communicated 19
Stage III: Testing and Approval Purpose: Enable vendors to build approved devices Process: Test plans/scripts provided to vendors Interoperability testing performed Our lab Meter vendor lab Other (3rd party) labs Devices approved on a rolling basis Outcome: Final list of eligible devices for retailers 20
Stage IV: Retail Market Program Launch Purpose: Facilitate vendors bringing approved devices to market Process: Training of retail channel Integration of needed systems Overall support of partners Support of end-users Outcome: Approved devices on store shelves promoted by retailers The market will decide which devices are worth adopting, we are giving it a push to get the ball rolling 21
Residential Inclining Block Two Tiered Tariff used in BC to encourage conservation 22
Residential Inclining Block ZigBee Smart Energy version 1.0 did not support Block Pricing Worked within the Alliance to develop Block Pricing to support BC Hydro business needs Co-authored the specification for Block Pricing in ZigBee Smart Energy version 1.1 Specification to Certification Strong participation from members From start to finish in testing to certified feature was 4 months 23

Over 10,000 ZigBee Smart Energy devices remotely upgraded to ZigBee Smart Energy version 1.1 framework 2011. Digi s business model involves partners. Proprietary approaches to handling software upgrades requires cooperation. ZigBee Smart Energy version 1.1 greatly reduces our integration and test time 26
Digi X-Grid HAN Solution Partners Diverse providers of ZigBee Smart Energy devices Partners Diverse providers of software services Partnership Model Maximizes Flexibility This market is evolving and will continue to evolve! 27
Importance of Over-The-Air (OTA) Energy Services need to be delivered from a broad range of device and application service providers Consumer adoption will be driven by an ability to service without dispatching a vehicle ZigBee Smart Energy (as with any industry standard) is ever evolving to deliver new services and capabilities to consumers 28
The World Before ZigBee Smart Energy Each manufacturer implemented their own proprietary method of OTA upgradability Many didn t offer any remote upgrade at all Cooperation and joint development was required for support by meters or gateway vendors Mixed networks are extremely difficult to manage Many gateway providers implemented work around methods of enhancing features or addressing issues 29
ZigBee Smart Energy version 1 HAN AMI Collection/ Smart Meter TX Thermostat and Gateway Operated Independently from the AMI network The Gateway and PCT used manufacturer specific profiles for most communications 30
The Migration to ZigBee Smart Energy version 1.1 AMI Collection/ Smart Meter TX The gateway operates as an ESI/IPD Router and joints the AMI network The PCT is upgraded and joins the AMI network The gateway facilitates key exchanges with the trust center 31
ZigBee Smart Energy version 1.1 Ready for new services AMI Collection/ Smart Meter TX Service Provider Utility Other New Energy Devices are being offered to customers Services can continue to expand increasing value to all Smart Grid participants 32
ZigBee Smart Energy version 1.1 OTA Results Upgrade development and test cut by over 50% in the Digi Interoperability labs Upgrades now available for test on all certified devices Successful upgrade of over 10,000 devices (gateways and peripheral devices) ZigBee Smart Energy 2.0 ready services Field experience with 3 meter manufacturers, and 8 energy device manufacturers through this process 33
Lessons Learned Robust upgrade services ensuring graceful handling of interruptions during the upgrade Gateway and Cloud Service enhancements Managing devices with limited resources Pre- and Post- HAN network image capture and validation services Cooperation and support between vendors is key 34
