Section 704 Special Provisions Provides the Engineer authority to exercise judgment using traffic volume, speed and lanes for non-freeway roads VDOT Road & Bridge Standards on-line: Section 1300 Revisions (Location & Design) Other temporary markings need to be specified in the contract (schedule of routes) Milled surface 15 mils thickness temporary marking Intermediate and final surface 8 to 10 mils temporary marking (thicker permitted) 10

Section 704 - Pavement Marking Lane lines and centerlines within 250 feet of the stop lines on approaches to signalized intersections with two or more approaching through lanes and 45 mph or greater speed limit, shall be temporarily or permanently marked within 24 hours, unless a time extension is approved by the Engineer. 11

Section 704 - Pavement Marking If specified in the Contract Documents, temporary symbol/message markings or edge lines be temporarily or permanently marked within 72 hours after the end of the workday when the corresponding existing markings were obscured, removed, or eradicated on non-freeway roads with 10,000 or greater ADT, and 96 hours on less than 12 10,000 ADT non-freeway roads.

Permanent Markings Installation Permanent markings (including symbol/message markings) completed within 30 days after the end of the last workday of continuous paving on that section of roadway except, Hydrocarbon thermoplastic markings completed within 45 calendar days Surface Treatment (slurry seal and latex emulsion) must fully dry, surface worn-in and fully swept before permanent pavement marking is applied: Up to 30 days if Type B Class VI is installed At least 14 days for all other materials 13

Permanent Markings Installation Infrared Instrument required to measure molten thermoplastic Type B, Class VI markings inlaid with a roller in a non-vibratory mode when the asphalt mat is between 100 and 180 degrees (excepting latex emulsion surfaces) Contrasting marking required on concrete bridge decks greater than 75 feet in length 14
