Backup and Restore for MySQL Databases In this document: Introduction on page 4 Relationship Between Configuration Backups and Database Backups on page 4 Backing up the Database on page 5 Backing up Configuration Data on page 5 Restoring the Configuration Files and Database on page 6 Introduction This document describes the recommended approach to backing up and restoring the WebTrends configuration files and system databases if you are using MySQL. For a more indepth discussion on backing up and restoring MySQL databases, refer to the documentation located in the directory common\database\mysql\docs under the root directory of your WebTrends installation. Relationship Between Configuration Backups and Database Backups Because WebTrends configuration data resides in both the WebTrends system database and in configuration files, you will need to restore both the configuration backup and the WebTrends system database in order to restore the complete configuration for an installation. For this reason, you should coordinate the timing of your configuration backup and your WebTrends system database backup to occur as close to the same time as possible. Backup and Restore for MySQL Databases 4

Backing up the Database Although several methods exist to backup databases, this section discusses just one of those methods. The method described here uses the mysqldump.exe application. This application is located in the bin\ directory of the installation. To backup a database: 1. Open a command prompt in the root installation of WebTrends and enter the following: mkdir \mysqlbackup cd common\database\mysql\bin mysqldump --opt --user=<your database username> -- password=<your database password> --resultfile=..\..\..\..\mysqlbackup\backup.sql --all_databases Note: The database password is the password specified during the installation. 2. All databases are backed up to..\..\..\..\mysqlbackup\backup.sql relative to the root of the WebTrends installation. 3. Rename the backup file to indicate the date the backup was made. For example, if the backup is made on July 1, 2004, rename the backup file to backup_2004-07-01.sql. Backing up Configuration Data A configuration data backup is created when a profile backup event is created. Backup events can be created automatically for all new profiles or on a per profile basis. To create profile backups for all new profiles: 1. From the Admin Console, select Administration > System Management > Backup/Restore > Options. 2. Click the New Profiles Will Have Backup Events Created check box. All profiles created after this point automatically have a backup event created for them. 5 Backup and Restore for MySQL Databases

To create a backup event for a specific profile: 1. From the WebTrends Admin Console, go to Scheduler > Scheduled Events. 2. Click Backup Event, and follow the New Event wizard instructions. Viewing Available Backups To view the list of available backups from the WebTrends Admin Console, go to Administration > System Management > Backup/Restore > Restore Backup. The configuration backup appears in the list with a backup type of Configuration. Once you have located the configuration backup, identify a database backup for the same time period. Restore both the database backup and the configuration backup to return your WebTrends configuration to its state at the time the backups were made. Restoring the Configuration Files and Database This section describes the procedures to be used to restore your configuration files to their state at the time of the selected backup. Be sure to follow the steps in the order they are presented. Restore the configuration backup 1. From the Admin Console, select Administration > System Management > Backup/Restore > Restore Backup. 2. Select the configuration backup, and click Restore Backup. When prompted click OK to continue, and the configuration files are restored. Stop the services 3. From the WebTrends Admin Console, go to Administration > Monitoring > Service Health. Click Shut Down System at the top of the screen to prepare the system for restoration, and the services are stopped. Backup and Restore for MySQL Databases 6

Restore the database backup 4. Open a command prompt in the root installation of WebTrends, and enter the following: CD common\database\mysql\bin mysql --user=<your database username> --password=<your database password> <..\..\..\..\mysqlbackup\<backup filename>.sql The file \mysqlbackup\<backup filename>.sql is restored. Restart the services 5. Open a command prompt in the root installation of WebTrends, and enter the following: CD modules\analysis\ systemshutdown.exe mode=start Your installation is restored to its state at the time the backup was made. 7 Backup and Restore for MySQL Databases
