NANYANG SCHOLARSHIP FACETS OF SUCCESS

NTU: THE NO.1 UNIVERSITY IN THE WORLD S TOP 50 UNDER 50 Young and research-intensive, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is the fastest-rising university in the world s Top 50 and ranked 39 th globally. Placed 1 st among the world s best young universities, NTU offers multi-faceted education that prepares students for the working world. With a broad and balanced curriculum, mentorship from internationally renowned professors and state-of-the-art facilities, you have plenty of opportunities to maximise your potential. At NTU, emphasis is placed on real-world exposure. Rapid globalisation is driving demand for a workforce with a broadbased skill set. Accordingly, our unique interdisciplinary approach to curriculum gives you the freedom to explore disciplines outside your core field. NTU offers engineering, science, business, humanities, arts and social sciences, as well as medicine through our joint school set up with Imperial College London. Students are increasingly finding value in combining engineering with business and humanities for a more holistic education. NTU offers global exchanges and outstanding internship opportunities where eight in 10 undergraduates will go overseas at least once during their studies. More than 400 partnerships worldwide mean your learning journey continues with academic and industry leaders such as Imperial College London, BMW, Rolls-Royce and Lockheed Martin. NTU also offers various university scholarships to support and groom promising young individuals to make a difference not only at work, but also in the community. The prestigious Nanyang Scholarship in particular is one that develops your talents to give you the competitive edge in the real world. Are you ready to take your next big step with us?

NANYANG SCHOLARSHIP The prestigious Nanyang Scholarship an emblem of the University s ethos recognises students not just for academic talents and leadership qualities, but also for their deep passion to contribute to society. Coupled with our broad-based curricula, the Scholarship aims to provide the best opportunities for deserving students to maximise their potential, cultivate their interpersonal skills, and strengthen their grasp of both academia and work-life situations. Read on to find out what some of our Nanyang Scholarship holders have to share about the rich opportunities they are enjoying at NTU.

POISED TO TAKE ON THE WORLD NTU IS MY CHOICE I believe having a globally recognised degree will allow me to thrive and succeed beyond Singapore. That s why I picked Nanyang Business School. It is established among the top-tier business schools in the world, with accreditation by the European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). I appreciate the fact that NTU is located on the western side of the island amidst lush greenery with many spaces for relaxation. Probably the largest university in Singapore, it offers a 200-hectare campus that is perfect for quiet and focused study without the buzzing distractions of the city. All around the campus, there are always improvements going on, such as state-of-the-art learning hubs, halls of residence, new retail shops and food outlets. There is so much to enjoy at this beautiful and vibrant garden campus. of four children can be daunting. The Nanyang Scholarship gives me the assurance that my degree programme s expenses are adequately covered. The Scholarship is also bond-free, which means I have the freedom to choose my field of study, internship and even a future employer without the usual restrictions that come with the terms of a sponsor. This truly opens up my options to pursue enriching experiences that would help me carve a successful career path and future in life. I have also gained valuable new interdisciplinary knowledge through the opportunities, presented by the Nanyang Scholarship, to meet renowned thought leaders such as former Singapore Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr George Yeo, and acclaimed National Geographic Live photographer, Mr David Doubilet, at the Eminent Speaker Series. I especially enjoy the opportunities to pursue my leisure interests in dancing, netball and swimming within my hall of residence. I have made many friends here who never fail to brighten my day. NANYANG SCHOLARSHIP MAKES THE DIFFERENCE Although my family does not struggle to make ends meet, financing the university education

A HEART TO SERVE AND GIVE A NEW LEASE OF LIFE TO MEDICAL CARE NTU IS MY CHOICE A two-year volunteering experience at Assisi Hospice and a five-month internship with the National Cancer Foundation Singapore started me thinking about what I wanted to be in the future. Listening to the frustrations of patients with terminal illnesses and seeing their suffering made me wish that I could do more for them. So I decided to become a doctor. I had many offers for placements at prestigious overseas universities, but I ultimately decided on NTU s medicine programme under the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine), a joint medical school with Imperial College London. The potential to learn from worldclass professors and the opportunity to learn medicine through an immersive and innovative curriculum built around the science and practice of medicine were strong motivators. Here, I enjoy the best of both worlds in a forward-looking global education right at home in Singapore. LKCMedicine is a close-knit family. Over the past year, I have built strong relationships with my schoolmates through peer assessments where we exchange feedback on areas for personal improvement. We are also assigned a house tutor each to mentor us and provide advice on our individual academic progress. The collective support from peers and faculty has made LKCMedicine truly like a second home to me. NANYANG SCHOLARSHIP MAKES THE DIFFERENCE Reading medicine is costly even before adding the expenses of hostel accommodation, books, transportation and other incidentals. The Nanyang Scholarship s comprehensive coverage of tuition fees, living expenses, hall accommodation and overseas study trips enables me to focus unreservedly on my work and frees me from the burden of having to repay a heavy loan upon graduation. There are also various opportunities for a well-rounded development beyond academic pursuits. Last year, I was elected the inaugural LKCMedical Society president, a role which allowed me to hone my leadership skills through representing the student voice in areas such as student welfare, and working with peers to organise events such as Freshmen Orientation Camp and the Post- Exam Party.

PURSUING MY DREAMS AND TELLING STORIES THAT CAPTURE THE HEARTS OF THE AUDIENCE NTU IS MY CHOICE I was given the opportunity to work in the local media industry at a young age and the art of film production captivated me at the time. This inspired me to set my path towards reading Communication Studies. I believe NTU is a choice institution for anyone who aspires to carve out a career in the information economy. Its reputation as the top university in the Asia-Pacific for Communication and Media Studies in the QS World University Rankings by Subject reaffirms my choice. The real-world critique and advice provided by the teaching faculty many of whom are industry professionals and the exceptionally hands-on nature of our coursework, make learning practical. With high expectations and an extensive measure of freedom granted to exercise creativity, I always feel that my potential is brought to a new level after every lesson. I am eager to embark on my internship so I can put all that I have learnt into real practice! Hidden gems such as the food stalls selling Ayam Penyet, Chinese dumplings and Korean cuisine attract not only the campus community but also draw throngs of patrons from nearby offices at lunchtime. It is quite a challenge to find a seat then, but I love it all the same! NANYANG SCHOLARSHIP MAKES THE DIFFERENCE I am thankful for the award of the Nanyang Scholarship. The generous travel and living allowances helped finance my semester of study at the University of Hertfordshire, United Kingdom, which gave me excellent exposure to a different academic culture and heritage. The film modules I took up during my stint also presented a valuable opportunity to learn about different film movements in European culture, enabling me to develop a more comprehensive and global appreciation of the art of filmmaking. Being in the University Scholars Programme has given me exposure to various topics beyond Communication Studies, such as philosophy, business, and the liberal arts. I have gained a more well-balanced worldview and the ability to envisage different perspectives, both of which will help me to become the filmmaker I aspire to be. Studies aside, the food at NTU is something extra I enjoy as much as my course.

STRIKING PASSION TO BRING ABOUT GREATER GOOD TO THE WORLD THROUGH RESEARCH NTU IS MY CHOICE I am drawn to Biological Sciences because I want to uncover the complexities in our biological world. My goal is to earn a PhD and conduct research for new scientific breakthroughs to bring about greater good to society. Ranked No. 1 in the world for industry income and innovation by Times Higher Education Rankings and being the most established research-intensive institution locally, NTU was my logical choice. I was attracted to its industry-relevant curriculum. The clear alignment towards market trends ensures that students develop a good fit to employers demands and are ready to meet challenges in the workplace. I have also taken up the CN Yang Scholars Programme (CNYSP) which allows me to delve deeper into Biological Sciences, further harnessing my foundation in science, mathematics and engineering. The programme grants me eligibility to pursue postgraduate studies with a scholarship and overseas laboratory attachment upon my graduation. and has brought me closer to my goal of becoming a capable and accomplished researcher. I am also actively involved in other co-curricular activities, such as planning the Freshmen Orientation Camps for CNYSP and School of Biological Sciences, and volunteering at the International Student Centre to help new overseas undergraduates acclimatise to university life. NANYANG SCHOLARSHIP MAKES THE DIFFERENCE I truly value the hall accommodation allowance given in the Nanyang Scholarship. Living on campus allows me to manage time effectively across my three academic programmes while also enjoying the enriching experience of co-curricular interests. The travel grant will also provide significant support for my planned exchange programme in Sweden. It will be an eye-opener and I look forward to the exposure to conduct research work at an international level. Working on a biofilm formation research project in The Singapore Centre on Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE) as part of the prestigious URECA (Undergraduate Research Experience on CAmpus) programme has deepened my understanding of the rigours in research. The experience of formulating my own experiments developed my analytical skills

CURIOSITY SPARKS THE NEXT TOP ENGINEER NTU IS MY CHOICE I have loved machines from a young age. To my parents dismay, I dismantled household appliances, damaging many in my curiosity to discover how they worked. As I grew older, my inquisitive nature spurred me to explore further the workings of mechanical apparatuses. I knew that becoming an engineer would satisfy my curiosity. The Renaissance Engineering Programme (REP) was the key driving factor in my choice of NTU. REP integrates engineering, business and the liberal arts in its curriculum and includes one year of study in an overseas partner university, such as University of California, Berkeley, and Imperial College London. In addition, the programme awards a Bachelor s degree in Engineering Science and a Master of Science in Technology Management at the end of the four and a half years of study. This programme truly accelerates and stretches my learning beyond what a regular engineering course can offer. independent and appreciative of what I have. It has been a very worthwhile and valuable experience. NANYANG SCHOLARSHIP MAKES THE DIFFERENCE Coming from a humble background, I find the Nanyang Scholarship a saving grace. Beyond financial assistance on the tuition fee, the Scholarship also covers basic expenses such as books, meals and the purchase of a computer. I am able to focus on my studies without worrying about financial concerns throughout the programme. I would not have been able to undertake the compulsory one-year study at the University of California, Berkeley, comfortably without the support of the Nanyang Scholarship. It has given me the opportunity to embrace a world-class university education and pursue my dream to be a top engineer. I recently completed my year-long study at the University of California, Berkeley, and overseas internship at Carl Zeiss. The knowledge and experiences gained during my Berkeley stint enabled me to see a different culture and meet some of the best minds in the field. My perspectives on life have also been broadened, and I have grown more
