3 Doctoral Schools in France From arrêté du 7 août 2006 relatif à la formation doctorale Four Major orientations Confirmation of the doctoral school as a place structuring the doctoral education offer, contributing to its visibility and attractiveness at the national, European and international levels. A doctoral school gathers in one given higher education and research site (University), quality scientific forces in a coherent set of themes, Accreditation of the doctoral schools by the State after evaluation by the High Council of the Evaluation of Research and Higher Education. The accreditation defines the scientific fields of expertise and allows the registration of the PhD students and the delivery of the doctorate degree, Recognition of the doctoral education as a professional research experience. The PhD student is no more considered as a student but as researcher in training, Possibility is given to all higher education and research institutions to participate to the doctoral education and to bring a significant contribution to the scientific and the educational animation of a doctoral school.

13 @Aix-Marseille University: Doctoral School Collegium (started in 2007) Four main missions Ensure the implementation of the PhD thesis Charter Provides a common and formal definition of the principles and the conditions of the doctoral education. Promote inter-disciplinarity between the 12 doctoral Schools 6 AMU allocated doctoral grants/year for interdisciplinary PhD theses involving at least 2 doctoral Schools. Strengthen the international visibility of the doctoral education at AMU AMIDEX Excellence Academy PhD Collegium grants (27 grants in 2014) to develop the attractiveness and the visibility at the international level of the doctoral education at AMU site. Promote and organize professional training modules: communication, project management, to prepare the PhD students for their future work Broaden the field of PhD students skills and prepare their professional integration, including and especially outside the fields of academic research.

19 : Support University Doctoral contract (décret du 23 avril 2009): Provides the doctoral education a legal framework regardless the PhD funding. Employment contrat for a definite periode (3 years), Defines the doctoral education as a full time training with the possibility to devote 1/6 th of the time to complementary activities (teaching, consulting, research valuation, etc). Thesis Charter (doctoral Schools Collegium): Provides a formal definition of the agreement between the PhD student, the research supervisor(s), the director of the host research unit and the director of the doctoral school. Definies the principles and the conditions of the doctoral education course, Specifies the allocated time for the PhD thesis, the necessary coordination between the PhD student, its supervisor, the director of the host research unit and the director of the doctoral school, Specifies the objectives and means to implement in terms of training and preparation to emploment of the futur doctors.
