1 Division of Academic Affairs REPORT OF THE PROVOST
2 University Library Introduction The following is a brief description of the activities of the University Library this past academic year. There were dramatic increases in library usage without an increase in students or faculty positions. The Library staff is to be commended for meeting the increased demand for library services. Refer to Library s Box Score at a Glance at the end of the report. Strategic Plan This is the second year of working with the Library s Strategic Plan. This Annual Report will be arranged in the initiatives of the Strategic Plan. Access to Information EnCompass, a digital collection manager, was implemented this year with the Lagomarsino Archives being the first collection planned to be accessible through this new interface. The Interlibrary Loan Unit implemented ILLIAD lending software program. ILLIAD is the premiere software program for interlibrary loan transactions. Interlibrary Loan statistics increased dramatically this past year. SFX Journal Linking software was implemented to increase access to the library s electronic journals. The library established a Key Server to expand access to software throughout the campus. The library did establish a formula for how many computers the library should have for student access. For every 62-student head count there should be one computer. Electronic Reserve dramatically increased in both material being added and student usage. Developing Collections The Library purchased 958 books, 46 videos, 113 DVD s, and 12 CD s this past year for $64,700. The library received 353 gift books that were added to the collection. Through the generous gift of Jack Poe, the library purchased Early English Books Online and American Periodical Index, Both digital collections contain over 100,000 volumes and thousands of newspaper articles that will enhance the resources for History, English, Political Science, Music, Theatre, and more. Approximately 4,000 digital images were added to Details, the library s image database. About half of the images were purchased while the remaining were digitized from faculty slides or hardcopy. 53
3 Instruction Librarians continue to extend their expertise to several different programs. Credit courses taught in 2004/2005 include UNIV 110, two sections of ENGL 310, and two sections of LS 499. Librarians and library staff worked with teaching faculty and program chairs to better integrate library instruction to achieve a balance between the course of study need and the student need. Librarians taught 137 library instruction sessions (75 more sessions than last year), a total of 401 hours (332.5 more hours than last year), for teaching faculty, which required an additional 218 out-of-class time preparation hours (153.5 hours more than last year). As a result, course-related librarian instruction impacted 2610 students (1388 more students than last year). Of course, some students attended more than one session, but collaborative efforts between library and teaching faculty kept repeat content to a minimum so each library session could provide participants with a new set of skills and experiences. The dramatic increase was the result of the demand for more information literacy instruction sessions as well as course specific application instruction for research presentations (Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Video editing, and Poster Production). Librarians and library staff also expanded the number of workshops offered to assist with computer applications used in the research process. This year the library offered students, faculty, and staff 19 workshops including Excel, Blackboard, Endnote, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, SPIN, ART Store, subject specific and databases. The dramatic increase in the time spent on library instruction has been significant this year. Librarians taught five courses over two semesters. Librarians and library staff committed 486 hours to course related instruction and approximately 50 hours to workshops. As a result, librarians and library staff were pulled away from other duties to meet the growing demand. The library sees instruction as a priority area since it directly impacts teaching effectiveness and student learning, but will soon be unable to keep up with the growing demand or continue to neglect other aspects of its operation. Expertise in instruction must be a hiring priority in the future for both librarians and multi-media library staff. Library as Place The library continued to have displays and exhibits throughout the year along with four concerts by the Channel Islands String Quartet. The Library sponsored six Book, Movie, and Pizza nights. Bell Tower 1302 was completed and provides an additional space for 60 students to study and use wireless technology. The room has already been used for poster sessions, plays, faculty receptions, and other university activities that fit into the mission of the library. 54
