At Abengoa Solar New Technologies, we focus our activities on the research and development of solar technology. At Abengoa Solar, we annually invest large resources on R&D, with an investment of around 42 M in the last two years. We currently focus our effort in proprietary R&D projects and in collaboration with several Research Institutions and Universities. Within the CSP area, our company emphasizes our efforts on tower, trough, Stirling dishes, and storage and biomass hybridization. Within the photovoltaic area, the working groups deal with thin film, photovoltaic concentration at an optical and high efficiency cells level. Expertise offered (related to the topic) ASNT is actually commercializing troughs and central receiver systems plants with a mature technology, and has also a strong line of work focused in Stirling technology in their R&D department. Abengoa started being involved within the DS technology taking part in the construction of the concentrator of EuroDish EC Joule 3 project. In 2007, before Solo went into insolvency, Abengoa developed its own concentrator and installed a pilot plant called AZTH based upon the Solo v161 and consisting of 17

18 eight 9 kw Stirling dishes. The target of the facility was learning by testing of precommercial engines as reference systems and compare and evaluate production and costs key figures with respect to tower, PV and parabolic trough technologies. The final price of the system and the efficiency of the concentrator were not improved compared to Eurodish. Nowadays Abengoa Solar is working in the development of a kinematic Stirling engine of 10 kwe within the Consolida project, with the collaboration of several enterprises, universities and research centers of Spain. The objectif of this project is to solve the problems that these kinds of engines suffer today, in terms of reliability. GTER was established in 1981 by Valeriano Ruiz Hernandez, Professor of the Seville Superior Engineering School, University of Seville. The research group has been involved in several R+D projects: Colon Solar (Thermie Program of the European Commission), SOLGAS (APAS Program of the European Commission), SIREC (R+D National Plan, Feder Funds), PS10 (V Frame Program EU), EUDEEP (VI Frame Program EU) and Cenit Consolida among others. Furthermore, GTER provides services of technical assistance and prepares reports and assessments for a number of regional, national, and international institutions in specific areas related to its activity. The group is made up of three PhD, six master degree and three interns. GTER focus its activities in the following areas: Solar radiation, total and spectral; solar resource evaluation and estimation; monitoring and evaluation of radiometric station data. Solar thermoelectric plants; potential assessment; development of simulation models; operation and maintenance of a parabolic dish system with Stirling engine. Tests bench for low temperature equipment; equipment certification; estimation of the principal parameters. Energy assessments of photovoltaic modules and systems. Distributed energy resources. 19

20 Expertise offered (related to the topic) GTER participates in different research projects on hybridization of solar thermal power plants with other energy resources (i.e.: biomass and fossil fuels). Other previous experiences consisted in the participation in a consortium for the design of a hybrid combined cycle power plant with central receiver (Colón Solar project) or the conceptual design and assessment of different hybrid configurations for central receiver plants in the SIREC Project. In the field of parabolic dishes, GTER collaborated with DLR in a proposal for hybrid operation, named Hypower, which was presented in an international program with the aim to develop a solar hybrid generation system for decentralized rural electrification. Along this experience, besides the knowledge gained regarding components, plant configuration, operation strategies and plant optimization in general, GTER has developed specific software for simulating the behavior of hybrid CSP plants. Moreover a number of academic projects have been carried out in this area, as well as different articles for SolarPACES symposium. In this context, the objective we would like to achieve with this topic is a comprehensive hybridization analysis of each technology (parabolic trough, central receiver and parabolic dishes) in order to generate a full project, which could conclude with the construction of pilot plants for tests and model validation. The final goal of the proposal would be the hybridization feasibility assessment and, if possible, the transfer to the market of the hybrid CSP plants to make technology efficient and competitive. Our experiences deals with the development of models of thermal storage systems and their integration in the management of the thermosolar plants production, as well as the integration of different sources of energy (mainly solar and biomass) in energy production (both in thermosolar plants and greenhouses). The group has a strong collaboration with the Plataforma Solar de Almería (South East Spain). This experimental facility belongs to the Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas Medioambientales y Tecnológicas (CIEMAT) and is the largest European center for research, development and testing of concentrating solar technologies. There is also a great collaboration with Fundación Cajamar, in the field of 27

28 greenhouse crop production and energy management. The previous experience can be seen in the following publications and references therein: E.F. Camacho, M. Berenguel, F.R. Rubio. Advanced control of solar plants. Springer, E.F. Camacho, M. Berenguel, F.R. Rubio, D. Martínez. Control of solar energy systems. Springer, in press. E.F. Camacho, F.R. Rubio, M. Berenguel, L.
