3 Launch of new book on dementia Bernie McCarthy s new book, Hearing the Person with Dementia: Person-Centred Approaches to Communication for Families and Caregivers, was launched at Readings Carlton in Melbourne on July 19. Guests were treated to readings from the book and anecdotes of McCarthy s experience of working with people living with dementia, their families and caregivers. McCarthy spoke of the need for empathy when interacting with people living with dementia and how imagination is needed to empathise. The book has been received very well by age care facilities, personal carers and boards of aged care facilities. Intended for both family and professional carers this book clearly explains what happens to the part of the brain that controls communication as dementia progresses, how this may affect a person s memory, language and senses, and how carers need to adapt their approach as a result. Advocating a person-centred approach to dementia care, McCarthy describes methods of verbal and nonverbal communication. These techniques include communicating with people who can no longer speak or move; strategies for communicating more effectively in specific situations such as mealtimes, helping the person with dementia to dress and whilst out and about. Exercises at the end of each chapter encourage the carer to reflect on their learning and apply it to their own circumstances. Guidelines for creating a life story with the person living with dementia as a means of promoting good communication are also included. The book is based on McCarthy s 15 years experience of working to support carers of people living with dementia at home and in residential care. McCarthy writes about the powerful effect of good communication in reaching a person previously thought to be unreachable because of cognitive impairment. The book explains how to recognise signs of wellbeing and ill-being when a person has lost the skills to communicate. Real life examples help the reader understand how the person with cognitive impairment interprets the world around them. In Australia, dementia affects the lives of nearly one million people who are involved in caring for a family member or friend with dementia. Based on the UKs Tom Kitwood s model of person centred care, McCarthy emphasises the importance of hearing and seeing the person with dementia as a feeling person even though the disease may have taken many of their abilities. Read what others have said: Bernie McCarthy s new book Hearing the Person with Dementia: Person-Centred Approaches to Communication for Families and Caregivers, is a must read for everyone not just those working in aged care. Most of us know someone with dementia. The book is an absolute must read for people with a loved one living with dementia and is highly recommended for all care workers employed in aged care. The language is easy to understand and aimed at the lay person as well as people experienced in aged care. Bernie helps the reader understand the experience of the person living with dementia. He explains what is happening in their world and gives strategies on how to alleviate stress and confusion for them. After attending training on the person-centred approach and reading a copy, 100 copies were purchased for our staff and the carers of our community clients. I highly recommend this book. The process of using DCM involves observing a number of people with dementia over a period of time and recording information about their experience of care, analysing and interpreting the data, then feeding it back to staff.
