The program consists of four levels where learning occurs in both the classroom and practical settings. The curriculum includes courses in social work methods, behaviour management, social welfare systems, addictions, community development, and the humanities. To provide exposure to working with a wide range of client groups, students are required to complete field placements in Levels 02, 03 and 04. Through the promotion of personal and spiritual growth within the healing process, you will acquire the ability to address your own needs and those of individual clients or groups. Traditional methods of healing include Sacred Circles, Teaching Circles, and the use of the four sacred medicines tobacco, cedar, sage and sweetgrass to promote an understanding of the physical, mental, social, cultural and spiritual elements of addiction and aspects of recovery, assessment and intervention techniques. You will gain respect and understanding of the Aboriginal culture and focus on increased effectiveness within the health care field. Students who graduate with a diploma in Indigenous Wellness and Addictions Prevention may complete an additional year in the Social Service Worker program or Mental Health and Addictions Worker program and receive a second diploma. The two year Mental Health and Addiction Worker program is designed to help you find meaningful employment in the diverse field of counselling. This program will train you with the proper knowledge, skills and attitude required to be an effective counsellor in a variety of mental health and addiction services. Students are trained to work in mental health and addiction specific settings and the broad spectrum of social or health service agencies where mental health and addictions related issues are likely to arise.
